ISSUE NO 201511 - 21 April 2015

FROM THE PRINCIPAL

Hello to all in the St Brigid's community.

Week 1 Term 2

Welcome back.

There was much excitement in the air on Monday morning as I welcomed the children returning from the Easter

vacation. My sincere hope and belief is that the children are ready for all the excitement that Term 2 promises.

I also welcome the new students and families who joined our community this week. Finally I welcome Mrs

Messenger to the Physical Education teacher role, replacing Mr Gudgeon who will spend Term 2 on Nauru

working with the children in the school on the island.

This Sunday is the Fourth Sunday of Easter.

We rejoin the Easter Season at the Fourth Sunday of Easter; sometimes known as Good Shepherd Sunday. The

Easter Season is a fifty-day period from Easter Sunday to Pentecost Sunday during which we celebrate the

Resurrection of Jesus Christ. On this particular Sunday we focus on Jesus as the Good Shepherd who laid down

his life for his flock.

The Gospel this week is Jesus’ Good Shepherd discourse taken from John Chapter 10. In it Jesus describes

himself as the Good Shepherd – one who lays down his life for his sheep.

Both the First and Second Readings this week give a hint of the pending Pentecost event and the role others

have in continuing to ensure that the spirit of Jesus the Good Shepherd continues to be present in the world. In

the 1st Reading Peter, on trial, is proud to announce that he healed the cripple in the name of Jesus Christ – ‘the

stone that the builders rejected’. In the 2nd

Reading John encourages the Christian faithful by reminding them that

‘the world refused to acknowledge him (Jesus) therefore it does not acknowledge us.’

So let us focus this week on the core of the Easter event, the love that Jesus showed to give up his life for us and

his invitation to follow his example of love, guided by the Holy Spirit, to ensure that the Good Shepherd continues

to be present in our world here and now.

ANZAC Day 2015

St Brigid’s students are invited to participate in the Nerang community “Centenary of ANZAC” ANZAC Day

Ceremony on Saturday April 25. Any students wishing to march with the school are asked to;

wear full school formal uniform

meet Ms Bray at Arthur Earle Park, Ferry Street Nerang between 9:00 and 9:15 am

Ensure they have a hat and sunscreen applied for sun protection during the ceremony

We will be hosting our own ANZAC Day ceremony in the MPA on Friday April 24 commencing at 9:15am. Our

students will also be visiting an ANZAC display in the foyer of the Eco-Enquiry building in the lead up to ANZAC

Day.

ANZAC Day Prayer

God of love and liberty,

We bring our thanks today for the peace and security we enjoy,

We remember those who in time of war faithfully service their country.

We pray for their families, and for ourselves whose freedom was won at such a cost.

Make us a people zealous for peace,

and hasten that day when nation shall not lift up sword against nation.

This we pray in the name of the one who gave his life for the sake of the world:

Jesus Christ, our Redeemer.

Amen

ODE

They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old;

Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.

At the going down of the sun and in the morning

We will remember them.

Student Protection Training for School Volunteers 2015

Student Protection is everyone’s responsibility. Prior to volunteering in classrooms we ask that you complete the

student protection training (annually) as outlined below:

Volunteers who are parents or guardians of students at St Brigid’s must read the following documents & sign the

‘School Volunteer Register Sheet’:

Volunteer Student Protection Handbook

Volunteer Code of Conduct

These documents are available to read and sign in the front office as required or on the Parent Portal.

Volunteers other than Parents or Guardians of students will be required to provide either of the following

documents:

Positive Notice Blue Card Registration number

Exemption card registration number

Please note that these cards will need to be presented to office staff for copying.

The final step is to complete and sign the ‘School Volunteer Register’ sheet before handing in to front office staff.

Please consult a member of the schools leadership team should you have any questions about the volunteer

registration process.

Medical Meetings

In coming weeks I will be making contact with parents of students who are impacted by serious medical

conditions such as anaphylaxis, epilepsy and other intolerances. A medical action plan will be created in

consultation with parents and shared with school staff. Please be mindful that:

Students should not bring nuts or foods containing nut products to school.

Students are not to swap or share foods whilst at school.

Students who are considered to be affected by asthma are required to provide the classroom teacher

with an asthma management plan. These can be obtained through visiting a Doctor or the following

website: http://www.asthmaaustralia.org.au/

Your child’s written Asthma Action Plan outlines:

1. What medication to take every day (even when you are feeling well).

2. How to tell if your asthma is getting worse.

3. What you should do if your symptoms are getting worse.

4. What to do if you have an asthma attack.

Having a written asthma action plan can help to:

o Reduce your chance of needing to go to hospital, or for an urgent doctor visit

o Improve your lung function

o Reduce the number of days off school due to asthma

Sometimes plans are based on your symptoms, while others are based on your peak flow score. You and your

doctor or nurse can decide together what will work best for you.

Through having current and accurate documentation on student’s medical conditions teachers are better able to

meet their needs and ensure they remain happy and healthy.

ANZAC Day 2015 – 100th Anniversary

This Saturday marks the 100th anniversary of ANZAC day. With activities having begun last term and with the

amount of coverage on the media over the holidays, our students will hopefully remember this week and most

importantly be grateful of the efforts of those who have served in many past conflicts.

We welcome you to come and visit the ANZAC day display which is in the ECO enquiry building. This display

gives a snapshot of what the children have been busy learning about in the lead up to Saturday.

You might notice that the flagpole has been transformed into a cenotaph and shortly 20 rosemary bushes will line

the Prep fence to mark the 100th

anniversary.

There will be a number of other activities including:

Chats and presentations with former serving members of the Australian Defence Force.

ANZAC Day Liturgy Friday 24 April

We cordially invite the St Brigid’s school community to our ANZAC day liturgy. This special liturgy will be held on

Friday morning in the MPA. We do ask if you could please be seated at 9am, ready for a 9.15am start.

ANZAC Day March

Miss Bray will be organising a group of St Brigid’s students to walk in the ANZAC day march on Saturday. This

year the march will commence from Arthur Earle Park Ferry Street Nerang. If your child/children would like to

take part, they must arrive between 9am and 9.15am. All children must be dressed in full day

school uniform (checked shirt or dress not sports uniform). Look out for the St Brigid’s school banner! On

completion students will be seated on the grass directly in front of the cenotaph at the Nerang RSL. Please

collect your children from this point.

Project Compassion - Many Thanks

The final figure that St Brigid’s school raised in the recent Caritas Project Compassion appeal was just short of

$2000! Thank you and well done to the staff, students and their families. A fantastic effort!

GUIDANCE COUNSELLOR

Welcome back to school for the beginning of Term 2! I hope you have all had a relaxing and reflective break and

are ready to start the term with energy and enthusiasm. This week is a fantastic opportunity to reflect on our

children’s sleep habits and routines. Over the holidays, it is easy to let bed-times slip, sleep- ins to happen, late

nights out and about with family and friends and day time naps to creep in. Now that school is back, it is the

perfect time to get this back under control. Do you know how many hours a night children need? Do you know

why sleep is important? And most importantly, do you know how to establish a good sleep routine? Read the

attached article by parenting expert Michael Grose to have your questions answered. Have a great start to Term

2!

ACTIVE SCHOOL TRAVEL

Welcome back to Term 2

We are looking forward to our 2nd

breakfast for the year next Tuesday morning, April 28th

, starting at 8am,

all welcome. We will welcome Zero the Hero at the breakfast and to an assembly afterwards. Zero will entertain

the P to 3 grades, teaching them about road safety.

We will continue to encourage all our students to travel actively to school every day. We will still conduct the

hands up survey on Wednesdays as it’s easier for consistency.

We will have more information next week about the passport system. For our new families, this system rewards

the children who travel actively regularly. There are prizes the children can win.

We also congratulate class 3C this week for winning the latest hands up survey. Well done to 3C!

TUCKSHOP

School lunches can harbour bacteria

Many children get sick when the school year starts up, or immediately after a holiday break as germs may be

lurking in an unexpected place: A frequently used surface or lunch boxes and bags can harbor bacteria.

Kids often don’t wash their hands before handling their lunch boxes and food. Since most lunches include finger

foods e.g. a pie, sandwiches and cut up celery and carrots it’s so easy to see how germs and bacteria can make

kids ill.

One option apart from encouraging hand washing is that parents can put a small bottle of antibacterial gel with a

tight-fitting lid in children’s lunch boxes to encourage them to clean up before eating. This is a great idea if kids

are buying some or all of their lunch from the tuckshop as well and it depends on what surface they also place

their lunch on so a couple of pieces of paper towel can also be used on surfaces that may have been used by

multiple people.

When packing lunches, adults and children need to follow good hygiene and food safety practices.

No matter who prepares the food and packs the lunch, start with clean hands, a clean work surface and a clean

lunch box. If lunch containers are not washed daily, crumbs and spills can accumulate and result in a build-up of

bacteria.

The tuckshop is now open every Wednesday, Thursday and Friday!

Please click here to access the 2015 Menu.

The preferred method for ordering tuckshop is online through Flexischools. Please click on the following link to

register your child and order tuckshop.

CLASS NEWS

Prep News

Welcome to the new term. The children have come back enthused and ready to learn. This week the children are

learning about the letter/sound Hh. Please keep encouraging your child to know all the sounds and words that

we have focussed on, as it is necessary for the early stages of reading and writing. The letters taught this year

are s, a, t, I, p, n, c, k, e.

In Maths we are discussing 2d shapes. The children need to know and draw a rectangle, a square, a circle and a

triangle.

In Religion we are reading the two Bible stories of the Creation. Sister Brigid is visiting our classrooms to expose

the children to the two different stories.

We are introducing the children to the World Globe. We will be identifying where Australia is and how to

differentiate the land and water. This will then lead us into our homes and where we live. This integrates with our

History focus being “My Family”. The children will be sharing a family photo with their classmates and completing

self portraits and family portraits over the coming weeks.

Year 1 News

Welcome back to Term 2 of Grade One. This Term we continue to build upon our first term learning and

developing our knowledge and skills of the world around us. We use the focus of well-known fairy tales to extend

out narrative writing, adding more detail and developing our understanding of literature and how it connects to our

daily lives.

This term Grade One children will commence a spelling workbook. In spelling children are expected to be able to

know regular spelling patterns such as words ‘-ell’ as in fell, well, bell etc. ; know consonant/vowel/consonant

words such as sun, tag etc. and familiar words used in writing e.g. me, my, and, the, it, etc. In addition, a

handwriting workbook will be commenced as part of a specific handwriting program explicitly teaching correct

letter formation and further enhancing letter recognition. The Grade One Curriculum states that children should

be correctly writing upper and lower case letters by the end of the year.

Term 2 homework will continue to be the revision of letter formation, knowledge of sounds and number work

booklet, Reading Eggs (recommended approximately 1 hour per week), readers and the addition of spelling

words. Spelling will consist of approximately 14 spelling words each week. These words may need to be

adjusted if your child experiences difficulty or extension words may be necessary for your child. The process of

sending home spelling words will be established prior to any spelling lists being adjusted. In general Grade One

children are happy to have-a-go at spelling words. The first 5 or 6 words are usually simple three letter

consonant/vowel/consonant words and are suitable to all children.

Year 2 News

Welcome back to another exciting term of school at St Brigid’s. The Year Twos are very excited about their

excursion to the Hinze Dam this week, where they will participate in the Hinze History Heroes Program. We will

share some photos and comments from the children about the day in next week’s newsletter. The students will

be learning many new things this term and enjoying some special activities, such as the cross country carnival

and Under Eights Day. We all look forward to a wonderful term.

Year 3 News

Welcome back to a new term! We would like to share with you some pics from our Ngutana-Lui incursion last

term. The day commenced with the children having their face painted in different Aboriginal markings and then

they learnt some traditional Aboriginal dance moves. There is always a fair bit of excitement over the boomerang

throwing and a few children really had the ‘knack’ for throwing one and it coming back! Another hit was Marlon’s

engaging and sometimes humorous presentation on traditional hunting weapons. The children were fascinated

by Brian’s amazing weaving skills. Although Brian, who is from the Torres Strait Islands informed us that in his

community weaving is more of a ‘woman’s’ job. Eric also impressed us with his didgeridoo performance. The

incursion completed our studies into Aboriginal History.

Year Three will ‘try their hand’ at a different type of weaving this term in Visual Arts so look out for some creative

pieces that may come home this term. This week we will be talking a lot about ANZAC Day. We hope that many

of you can make the special ANZAC Day liturgy this Friday at St Brigid’s and also the ANZAC Day march this

Saturday in Nerang. Have a great first week back!

Year 4 News

Welcome back to all parents, students and families. We are looking forward to an exciting term 2.

Cross country notes are due back.

ANZAC Day Liturgy

This Friday we are celebrating an ANZAC Day Liturgy at school at 9.15am.

The school will also participate as part of the Nerang community ANZAC March on Saturday morning. All families

administer medication to your child during school hours, you must complete a Student Medication Request form.

Medication is to be provided in the original pharmacy labelled container/box to the school.

Please ensure medication is not out of date and has an original pharmacy label stating the student's

name, dosage and time to be taken.

The student needs to have previously received a dose at home without any ill effects.

The medication must be collected when it is no longer required at school.

A new form must be completed if the student is prescribed a change.

NB: Where possible, medication should be administered to your child at home at times other than during school

Lost Property

It doesn't seem to take long before we accumulate a large pile of lost property at the office. If you have labelled

your children's items and they turn up in lost property, we will send them back to the classroom. It is therefore

very important to label every single item.
