Bronze Award Recipients

Gold Award Recipients

Silver Award Recipients

Each week, every Year 9 and 10 student is gauged against our school values by the teachers of English, Maths, Science, Social Studies and PE. Students who achieve the maximum possible marks for five weeks gain a Bronze Award. By gaining another five weeks of maximum values, students move from Bronze to Silver and so on.

The Manaakitanga awards indicate that these students are being consistently Respectful, Responsible and Caring - or in other words are showing Manaakitanga.

Attenburrow has his Birthday!

On Tuesday Bow, who has been looked after by Miss Nash’s Year 9 Science class, celebrated his first birthday with a rabbit friendly cake, presents and his tutor group giving him plenty of chin scratches. What a spoilt Bunny!

Summer Reading Over the summer months, learners lose ground academically because they often associate reading with school – therefore it is work and they do not want to do it. One of the key findings of the research report “School achievement: Why summer matters” was that:

The summer learning effect was confirmed as a major barrier to ongoing achievement: the gains made over the school year disappeared.

Report authors: Stuart McNaughton, Rebecca Jesson, Tone Kolose and Sophie Kercher (2012) Teaching and Learning Research Initiative, University of Auckland.

To support student reading over the summer the Rosehill College Library is allowing students to issue books for their summer holiday reading. Students:

• Must be returning in 2018• Can take up to 15 books• Can issue books from 7th December• Can stockpile books before the issue date

Students can collect the summer borrowing form from the library. The signed form, which can be found at the end of this newsletter, is to be returned to the Library.

RowingOver the weekend of 18-19 November a number of Rosehill College students participated in the Karapiro Memorial Regatta as part of Counties Manukau Rowing Club.

Weather conditions were less than favourable and it was rough on the water. The Novice Boys Quad made up of Gabe Jonson, Kevin Wang, William Chaffe & Josh Hutton rowed very well placing 2nd in their heat, then moving on to place 3rd in their A Final. Unfortunately this was the only final to be rowed over the weekend involving Rosehill, as the regatta was called off for safety reasons due to the high wind gusts.

Kenna Richmond & Charlie Molloy placed 1st in the Girls U16 Double well ahead of the field. Kenna went on to win her heat in the Girls u16 singles later that day, and Charli placed 4th in her heat in the same event. Shannon Murphy & Taryn Richmond place 2nd in the Womens Novice Double sculls which is an incredible result for their very first outing at Karapiro. Rebecca Powley rowed really well in her club & U18 single scull events against some tough competition.

Homestays Wanted We seek homestays in our school zone with sound English language skills to host International students in 2018 for both short term and long term stays.

Rosehill College Gateway Programme Applications for 2018Applications are now open for our 2018 Gateway Programme. The programme at Rosehill College applies to senior students returning in 2018 as Year 12 or 13 students.

A number of students have put their names down for consideration and applications are currently open until school returns in term 1, 2018.

Gateway is a Tertiary Education Commission (TEC) funded programme designed to strengthen the pathways for senior students (Y12/13) with the transition from school into the workplace. The Programme Coordinator invites students to apply, then interviews each student to ascertain career options for each individual. If accepted for Gateway, the Coordinator finds students work experience in a variety of careers in the community. There is a focus on students looking at transitioning into either a trade or directly into employment after leaving school. The programme delivers Gateway students additional work related courses and training with NCEA credits to help them toward their chosen goals. Gateway assists in making good work connections for students and in some situations work placements may lead on to either employment or apprenticeship opportunities. Gateway has limited places so if you would like to be considered, pick up an application from Mrs Dyer in the Gateway Office at the back of the School Library or click this shortcut to be taken to the form. All applicants will need to have acceptable attendance at school and HOH needs to give approval.

If any parents or families of Rosehill College have a business that would be a suitable workplace learning experience for a Rosehill Student please contact the Gateway Coordinator, Mrs Nicki Dyer on 295 0661 ext 847 or email [email protected]

Jarred Picknell also had his first taste of racing in a mixed crew with Strathallan boys who also rowed well.

These results are very encouraging for competitors and coaches and we look forward to seeing more of these results as the season moves forward (hopefully with better weather conditions!)

WaterpoloThe Rosehill Waterpolo team play in the Social League each Sunday evening at Mountfort Park, playing against a mixture of experienced senior and social players. The team include - Kevin Wang, Lucas Hutton, Josh Baker, Cody Shaw, Jess Ingram Kiana Lawton, Lily Hart, Quinn Lawton, Caitlin Lucie-Smith, William Chaffe, Chloe Rickett, and Georgia Ackroyd

The first game had good defensive saves in goal by Josh & Lucas, with 3 goals from Chloe, Kiana & Jess. Final score 10-3. Game 2 against their second opponent, was another tough loss for the team losing 9-0. The team is a great bunch of new and developing players with some excellent swimming and defensive skills.
