ANZAC Ceremony Our Anzac Ceremony held today was a wonderful occasion for the whole school and very well conducted by our senior students, Amy and Syrus. I would like to congratulate all the children on the respect and overall conduct that they demonstrated throughout the whole Ceremony. Our special guests were most impressed. The whole ceremony reflected a great community effort including the presentations by individual Year 5 and 6 children – Benjamin, Nikola, Kallaghn, Audrita, Max and Sheldon. Many thanks to all the parents for the donation of so many beautiful flowers for the wreaths and to the many families and community members who attended this special ceremony. The Choir sang beautifully in their first official performance for the year and are to be congratulated on their outstanding effort. Many thanks to Mrs Miell for her excellent preparation of the choir and to the parents who helped with the choir uniforms. We were also very fortunate to have two guest speakers Warrant Officer Jon Evans and Mr Wayne Loughrey, President of the Kalamunda Returned Services League who both provided some very poignant messages about the meaning and spirit of ANZAC Day. Following the Ceremony, Warrant Officer Evans visited some of the classrooms and answered questions from the children about his role in the Army. A big thank you to Mr Meachem and the staff involved in the organisation of this special ceremony. Parent Interview Day - Reporting Term 1 Parent Interview Day was conducted on Wednesday/Thursday to provide all parents with the opportunity to participate in Teacher/ Parent interviews. This provided all parents with the opportunity to share and discuss valuable information regarding their child’s progress with AN INDEPENDENT PUBLIC SCHOOL the teachers early in the year. Discussions were based on student achievement of the School’s Literacy and Numeracy Standards and Student Test Books. Interview Day was very well attended by parents. Principal’s Volunteer Reading program To assist with providing more opportunities for our children to read to adults at school, we will be continuing the Principal’s Volunteer Reading Program next term. Last year, we had many volunteers who assisted greatly with listening to children from Pre Primary to Year 6 read throughout the week. The children certainly enjoyed the opportunity and made considerable progress in their reading which is the whole purpose of the program. This year, I would like to expand the program further and seek the support of many more parents. It only requires you to give up 30 minutes of your time either from 8.30-9.00am and/or from 2.30-3.00pm any day of the week (Tuesday 2.00-2.30pm). Parents can volunteer for as many times per week that they wish. A Parent Information Workshop will be conducted prior to the re commencement of this program to provide parents with details as to how the program will operate. If you attended this program last year, you do not need to attend the workshop again this year. The more practice children have with their reading the better and more confident they will become. Information will be distributed in Week 1 of Term 2. Our motto of ‘Give to Receive’ is most appropriate for volunteering in your child’s school and I know you will receive a lot. Have a wonderful and safe holiday everyone and we’ll see you all on Tuesday, 26 April. Assembly News: Last week, the wonderful students from Room 21 put on a fabulous senior assembly. The class has been putting a great deal of effort into developing their speaking and listening skills. They learned a series of short skits, which are miniature plays. Each students had to remember a number of lines and then practise delivering them until they were perfect. They told some really weak (but funny) jokes about teachers, performed some groan worthy gags based on restaurants, and, best of all – made fun of poor Mr Sherlock, who won the title of ‘World’s ugliest Clown’. The students were really pleased with the reaction from the audience, and the group is already working on next year’s gag concerning Mr Sherlock!

Book Review from Room 17 ‘Skellig,’ by David Almond is an awesome book. The novel is filled with incredible events, imagination and it will take you on an emotional rollercoaster. Michael (the main character) has a loving and caring heart. It all begins when Michael and his family move into a new house. He goes on an adventure through his rundown back yard, only to find a dilapidated garage with a mystery inside to be found. From this point, the reader is taken on a magical journey full of incredible events. I would recommend this novel for Year 4 students and up. You definitely will enjoy the read. 5 out of 5 stars. By Catherine, Year 5, Room 17

Student Representative Profiles: Term One 2016 Dillon I have been at this school for two and a half years and have enjoyed every day at this school. It has been great because of the wonderful teachers, staff and students. I am very grateful to be a student rep for term 1, 2016. I have an older brother that also attended wattle grove but has now moved on to high school. I am the youngest in the family. I like all subjects at this school but I personally say sport is the best. I absolutely love this school and enjoy how the teachers are helpful and always teach fun things. I also like how well the students are towards each other .

As a student rep for term 1 I would love to help everyone by giving all my ideas in the meetings and respect everyone in my delightful school, WATTLE GROVE!

Karmella Hello. My name is Karmella and I have attended Wattle Grove Primary School for four and a half years. I like reading and playing video games in my spare time. My favourite subjects are Maths, English and Art. I love animals; especially polar bears! I love being a student representative! I’ve been enjoying doing my daily jobs. I love doing sports shed, power ranges and lunchies. I like serving the students and handing out the equipment in the sport shed, collecting all the lunchies from room to room and then counting them. I’m not afraid to speak in front of crowds so speaking at assemblies is no problem. In fact, I rather enjoy it! I’m currently taking part in the coin trail fundraiser. It is a lot of fun and we will hopefully raise lots of money.

Su Hello my name is Sudeshma but people call me Su for short. I’m 11 years old and I have a mum, a dad and a brother, Sam. I do swimming every Sunday from 10:30 to 11:05. I like to watch beat boxing and wrestling. I like to play tennis with my family and I also like to wrestle. My favourite food is a party pie. I really hate tomato and onions. I also love the colour light blue.

Coin Trail A fantastic effort by the Student Reps, so far they have managed to raise $498.55 with the Coin Trail Challenge. All funds will go towards the Graduation present for Wattle Grove Primary School. Thank you to everyone for your contribution.

Thank you—Student Reps Term 1

Many thanks to our Term 1 Student Representatives – Namita, Elyas, Syreeta, Doyle, Joshua, Blake, Dillon, Skyler, Samara, Adit, Kamella, Su, Alyssa and Madison for their wonderful contribution as student leaders in our school. They all showed a considerable amount of responsibility and initiative throughout the term and can be very proud of the manner in which they conducted themselves and the results of their effort.
