It is God, who is Love, who leads the Church towards those farthest away and calls us to be renewed from the original

source, Jesus Christ, from whose pierced heart flows the love of God. The God of love is the source of care, tenderness,

compassion, hospitality and interest in other people's problems, for spreading Christ's charity around the world.

Catholic Mission around the world has the responsibility of promoting a dignified and fruitful celebration of World Mission

Day. This year World Mission Day is Sunday 19 October 2014.

October is Mental Health Month

Public campaigns such as Mental Health Month are a great way

to reinforce the importance we place on positive mental fitness

at St John’s. For everyone in the St John’s community, students,

parents/ carers and staff, taking steps to build and maintain a

positive mental outlook and develop skills to help us deal with the tough times is so important to living a happy, balanced

life.

Having the opportunity to talk about our worries or problems with a friend or loved one can be extremely helpful but

unfortunately not everyone is lucky enough to be able to do that and sometimes more help is needed. The professional

support services listed and family GP’s are there to provide that extra support when needed. In the past there has been a

stigma attached to even talking about mental health issues let alone recognition of a person experiencing a mental health

illness, but hopefully that is changing. Let us not for forget the simple question to a friend – Are YOU OK?

Promotion of Mental Health Month is a positive way to break down any stigma still attached to mental illness and to bring

awareness to how prevalent mental health illness is in the wider community.

Some key places to visit for support or advice include:

Gospel Reflection:

“Many are invited, but few are chosen." Matthew 22:1-14. Sunday’s Gospel account is related to a wedding feast where

many who were invited did not attend and those chosen to attend complied with the request, except for one who saw it as

an opportunity for a free ride. If we can link the Gospel passage to what we are asked to observe as people of faith, then the

message is loud and clear. Be a good person and be a witness to your faith. The invitation is always there. We have been

chosen because either through our parents or through direction from God we have been baptised to be a participant in the

Sacramental church.

Sydney Year 5 Excursion

Tomorrow our Year 5 students and their teachers will be heading off on their excursion to Sydney. They will have an exciting

time with highlights including the Bush to the Beach program at Collaroy Beach and a visit to Mary MacKillop Place. A big

note of thanks to Mrs Mulholland, Miss Bolton, Mr Foley and Mr Thomas who will be travelling with and caring for our

students. I am sure they will all have many interesting stories to tell upon their return.

God Bless and have a great week,

Anthony O’Leary
