Year 12 Leadership Induction Ceremony

At our Leadership Induction Ceremony where our Year 12students were presented with their badges, I shared somewords of great athletes and leaders:

Michael Jordan: ‘Some people want it to happen, some wish itwould happen, others make it happen.’

Usain Bolt: ‘Believe in your dreams and that anything ispossible,’

Mahatma Gandhi: ‘Live as if you were to die tomorrow, learnas if you were to live forever.’

I also once again shared some quotes that I shared at ourLeadership camp:

‘Leaders become great, not because of their power, butbecause of their ability to empower others.’

‘Where there is no vision, there is no hope.’

‘Leadership cannot be given, it must be earned, it cannot betaken away, you lose it by lack of performance.’

‘Leadership is not a position or a title, it is an action and anexample.’

‘A leader is one who knows the way, goes the way, and showsthe way.’

‘If your actions inspire others to dream more, learn more, domore and become more, you are a leader.’

‘Great leaders don’t set out to be a Leader … They set out tomake a difference.’

It was an important day for all of our Year 12 families as theyplay such a big part in our school. On behalf of the schoolcommunity, I would like to wish our Year 12 students all thebest as they help lead Mansfield State High School so it can bethe best school that it can be.

Parking restrictionsPlease DO NOT DRIVE INTO THE SCHOOLGROUNDS OR SCHOOL DRIVEWAYS atany time other than to collect a sick studentfrom the Administration Block or for eveningfunctions. There are many safe areas alongBroadwater Road west of Ham Road fordrop-off and pick-up. It would beappreciated if you would arrange to collect your student from adesignated meeting place some one hundred metres awayfrom the school.

Please do not set down, collect or park in any of the restrictedzones near the entrances of the school, particularly theBroadwater Road Entrances near the Administration Buildingand the Ham Road Entrance near the Music Block. Please notethat outside the Administration Building is a ‘NO STANDING’zone that is frequently patrolled by the police or Council officersand the fines are heavy. Wherever there is a YELLOW LINE,vehicles are not to stop. Thank you for trying to make ourschool environment safer. It is so important!

We have two regulation size disability parking bays in the HamRoad car park, just next to the Music Block. This parking isavailable for motorists who require parking access with eitherRED or BLUE permits only. Please note these bays are clearlymarked and are not for general parking use. We currently havestudents who require access to these parking bays at morningdrop off, afternoon pick up and during the day. We ask parentsto please refrain from accessing these spaces to ensureparents of students with disabilities can ensure safe andefficient access to the school. There is also a disability parkingbay in the administration car park. Thank you for yourunderstanding and cooperation.

Parents coming to the schoolParents entering the school grounds are to go immediatelyto the Upper Office. If a parent wishes to meet with a staffmember, the staff member will be asked to come to the officearea, if he/she is available. An appointment will usually need tobe made.

At no stage are parents to go directly to a staff room oran administrator’s office. So that our students and staff haveconfidence in knowing that only authorised adults are in ourschool grounds and in our staffroom and offices, parents askedto ensure that this process is followed. The safety of all of ourstudents and staff is paramount.

Thank you for your understanding in these matters.

I hope you all have a wonderful week with your family as weprepare for another busy year ahead of all of us.

Insurance cover for students undertakingphysical activities

Physical activity and physical education, particularly contactsports, carry inherent risks of injury. Parents are advised thatthe Department of Education Training and the Arts DOES NOThave Personal Accident Insurance cover for students.Education Queensland has public liability cover for all approvedschool activities and provides compensation for studentsinjured at school only when the Department is negligent. Unlessnegligence is proven, all costs associated with an injury are theresponsibility of the parent or caregiver. It is a personal decisionfor parents as to the type and level of private insurance theyarrange to cover students for any accidental injury that mayoccur.

Information Technology

School network

The school and the P&C have spent hundreds of thousands ofdollars to upgrade the school wireless network. This upgradehas taken place over the school holiday period and will not befully complete until after the Easter holidays. The start of theyear has not been without its hiccups as we iron out the bugs inwhat has been a complete rip and replace of the old network. We are already seeing the benefits with our IT Techniciansjoining over one hundred laptops to the network in a singleroom while preparing them for the students. This would havebeen impossible with our old equipment. I am looking forwardto Term Two when the upgrade will be complete.

Laptops for Years 11, 10 and 7

You should be aware that all students in the above year levelsare required to bring a laptop to school every day. All studentshave been given details on daily laptop procedures. It is

important they follow these procedures to make best use of thelaptops and ensure the devices are kept safe.

There are generally two options to supply a laptop – Bring yourown device (BYOD) or join the school laptop program. For ashort time, the school will have daily loan laptops for studentswho have yet to choose one of these options. At some pointthough, students will have to supply their own laptop.

School Laptop Program

I am very pleased to see the huge number of laptops now in thehands of the students. It has been a massive effort to prepareand distribute hundreds of laptops to students in years 11, 10and 7. The laptop program is ongoing and there are laptopsavailable right now if you still want to join. Being part of thelaptop program gives hassle-free access to a laptop with thelatest hardware. Plus, you get 3 years’ warranty and accidentaldamage protection along with school software and supportfrom our technicians. Forms and information are on the schoolwebsite.

BYOD

Information about bringing your own computer is also on thewebsite. Please be aware there are minimum specifications toensure an acceptable experience for students while at school. Also please remember that as it is not a school device you haveresponsibility for warranty claims, repairs and software issues.Students need to take their device to the IT Help Desk the firsttime they bring it to school so it can be joined to the networkthrough an “on-boarding” process. After this one-time process, the laptop should automatically join each time it is brought toschool.

The widely known and respected academic, Professor JohnHattie, recommends “persistent and relentless attention toevidence-based impact” on student learning and performance. To this end, Learning and Performance has a range ofprograms that provide close attention to evidence based

We love to hear all about the wonderful achievements of ourstudents, whether they be sporting, musical, cultural, or service. We also like to share this news with our community and thewider public. If you have a story to tell us, please email MrsSue Holley [email protected]. We just love to share the goodnews.

Braydon Smith (7F) represented Queensland at the NationalFutsal Championships in Sydney during January. TheQueensland boys put in a tremendous effort in the grand finalagainst a Victorian team, only to just get pipped 4-5 at the finalwhistle. Congratulations Braydon, a silver medal is somethingto be very proud of.

Mrs Sue Holley, Community Liaison Officer

Chaplaincy NewsGlen Petersen, is our School Chaplain andhis office is in A04 which is near thecanteen. Glen is a former student andSchool Captain of Mansfield High and hisdoor is always open for students either tojust drop in at break times or byappointment (Monday to Thursday).

Chaplains provide for student’s emotionalneeds through pastoral care – helping students struggling witha wide range of issues, including: family problems, confusingrelationships, friendship issues, peer pressure, self-esteemissues, bullying, stress and anxiety. Chaplains provide generalpersonal and spiritual advice, comfort and support to allstudents and staff, regardless of their religious affiliation orreligious beliefs.

Current government funding supports nearly two days a weekfor the chaplaincy program but as a school community weare responsible for raising $35,000 each year to cover theadditional two days per week. Donations are always verywelcome and are tax deductible. Donations can be left at theUpper Office in an envelope marked Mansfield Chaplaincy;simply add your details to the donation if you would like areceipt for tax purposes. We will be conducting a specialChaplaincy Drive in the second term, but all donationsthroughout the year are greatly appreciated.
