(February 1, 2013) TORONTO — Valentine’s Day is your last chance to nominate a 2013 Highway Star Of The Year. Truth be told, the deadline is one day later — Friday, Feb. 15. But the very act of submitting a nomination — even if the driver doesn’t win — is a lovely and inexpensive way to show him or her how much you love their work.

We’re looking for some terrific individual out there; we’re talking about an experienced, safe, conscientious driver who is a credit to the name on the door as well as to the community at large. The winner gets $15,000 in prizes (including 10 grand in folding money) and a free trip for two to Montreal to the Highway Star of the Year Awards Ceremony, coinciding with ExpoCam 2013. Nominating your driver is cheap and easy, and of course you can nominate yourself if you prefer. The competition is organized by Newcom Business Media (the company that owns this website and ExpoCam), and co-sponsored by Freightliner, Meritor, Espar, Cummins, Chevron, and the Owner-Operators Association of Canada (OBAC). Past winners have come from across Canada and included company drivers as well as owner-operators. The deadline is Friday, Feb. 15. A panel of judges will consider all the nominations and will be contacting qualifying candidates and nominators after that date. To get the process started, click here. Good luck! And if you’ve any questions, email Peter Carter at [email protected]

New California regs forcing trucks off the road (January 1, 2013) California rang in the New Year by placing certain truck engines, trailers, tires and even entire vehicles on its environmental out list — requiring motor carriers to spend tens of thousands of dollars on new equipment that may never meet the state's ambitious objectives. The new rules apply to trucks registered in other states — and even other countries. “The state is forcing certain trucking companies and operators to make investments that are going to add cost with no return with regard to fuel efficiency, and therefore no impact on their desired policy operative,” said Steve Laskowski, senior vice president of the Canadian Trucking Alliance. The regulations are part of the California Statewide Truck and Bus Rule, actually a lengthy set of rules on a staggering enforcement schedule approved by the California Air Resources Board in 2008. The new regulations affect about 1 million trucks, according to Karen Caesar, information officer for CARB.

Canada increases and harmonizes low-value shipment threshold with the United States Ottawa, Ontario, January 8, 2013 — The Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) and U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) announced today that Canada and the United States have increased and harmonized the value thresholds for expedited customs clearance to CDN$2,500 and USD$2,500 respectively. This is an increase from the current levels of CDN$1,600 for Canada and USD$2,000 for the United States.
