FROM THE SECOND BRIDGE OPENING
Community News
In Brief ...
KUROW PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH: Sunday Services are at 10am at St Stephen’s. Lee Kearon will be in the Parish on the second weekend of every month. If you or someone you know would like a visit please ring Lorna Utting on 4360 829.
WAITAKI CITIZENS AWARDS: Nominations for Citizens Awards opened on Monday 9 June 2014. Forms are available here in the Info Centre or online at the Council Website. Nominations close: Friday 8th August at 5pm.
EXTRACT FROM UPPER WAITAKI POLICE NEWS: (BEAN) Recently I've had reports of quite a few pigs playing chicken with cars …and losing. As well as a few hinds, and a stag also being collected. I've almost collected a couple of hinds myself, as well as a few pigs, if you slow down especially in those high risk areas, you increase the chance of being able to stop in time and avoid a hefty panel beating bill or worse. If you don't know where those high risk areas are, ask around or give me a call. I'm not too keen on advertising the areas publicly, in case we get some loons from out of town who think they can come and get some easy pickings and start shooting from the road, needless to say highly dangerous and illegal. While I'm on about road safety, I have caught 2 drink drivers in the last month and I'm pretty sure Craig has caught two as well. If you drink then drive you’re a bloody idiot, and sooner or later if we don’t stop you, Mr Lamppost or Mrs Ditch, or one of their friends will!
THANK YOU: On behalf of the Breast Cancer Society we wish to thank: PGG Wrightsons, Farmlands CRT, Hamish and Lyn from Intrigue, Maudies, Kurow Vets, Waitaki Hotel, Kurow Hotel, Kurow Foodcentre, Brian and Alice Trembath, Gifts & More and Kate White for their kind donations. A special thanks to the Valley Café for hosting our breakfast. The winner of the lovely raffle was Lorna Utting.
REQUEST FOR PHOTOS: I want to make a collection of photos from earlier times in Otematata. If you have any photos from your time spent living in or visiting the town during the time between about 1958 and 1970 could you possibly send me hard copies or jpeg images online? I will return any hard copies promptly - I do appreciate how precious photos are! I will pay for any postage Post to me: Kate Frost, 3 Buller Crescent, Otematata 9412. OR: Email images - do either of the following: Email attachments of at least 500kbs per image-scan at about 300dpi OR upload them to http://www.mediafire.com/ Mediafire is great for doing this as all you need to email is the link to the page - all clearly explained on the website. Thanks Kate Frost

An elderly, white-haired man walked into a jewellery store one Friday evening with a beautiful young blonde at his side. He told the jeweller he was looking for a special ring for his girlfriend. The jeweller looked through his stock and brought out a $5,000 ring. The old man said, "No, I'd like to see something more special." At that statement, the jeweller went to his special stock and brought another ring over. "Here's a stunning ring at only $40,000," he said. The young lady's eyes sparkled and her whole body trembled with excitement. The old man seeing this said, "We'll take it.." The jeweller asked how payment would be made and the old man stated, "By cheque. I know you need to make sure my cheque clears so I'll write it now, and you can call the bank on Monday morning to verify the funds and I'll pick the ring up on Monday afternoon," he said. On Monday morning, the jeweller 'phoned the old man and said "Sir, there's no money in that account." "I know," said the old man, "but let me tell you about my weekend!" Not all Seniors Are Senile...

Gentle Exercises take a trip to Otematata One Thursday members of the Oamaru and Kurow Gentle Exercise Programme boarded a bus bound for Otematata to join another 15 Gentle Exercise participants at the Otematata District Club. The Gentle Exercise Programme started in September 2012 and is a collaboration between Sport Waitaki and Age Concern. The programme has been very popular and grown to now include a total three locations and thanks to the great work of a number of volunteers, there are approximately 70 people who gather weekly in Oamaru, Kurow and Otematata. An idea that started with a car load of Oamaru attendees quickly grew to a full bus. Those on the trip enjoyed playing a number of games and a light lunch prior to arriving in Otematata. The return trip included a detour to have a look at the progress of the new bridges in Kurow. Kate Cartwright from Sport Waitaki said it was a great day enjoyed by all. “I love being a part of this programme working with so many kind hearted volunteers and participants who are always keen to have a fun. When establishing the programme in 2012, we could have never imagined the huge success it has been with regular participants finding a huge range of physical benefits as well as great friendships.” she said. For anyone interested in attending any of the sessions, the cost is a gold coin.
