PINEWOOD DERRt'The pinewood derby is probably one of the

most r-niversally popular and successful fam-ily projects available. Pinewood derby.cars*are simply snnl1 nodels of specified dimen-sions, created and carved by.the boys, under -the guidance of parents, urd raced by theRangers. They ar.e gravity powered and rurrdown a regulation track. The derby is r,.rni-n heats, with cars starting from a sta-.rd-still and runnjng unaided down a ra.mp tothe finish 1ine. A wooden strip placeddor^m the center of each lane guides thecars. Lead may be used to bring the carsup to the res'ulation weight of 5 or-rnces.

    CHARTERING!!!by l(enneth E. llest

IVhat thoughts come to mind when this term pops up at the beginning ol a new year..Extrapaperwork? Begging kids lor money? Remembering to mail early? Wondering, why chartain the lirst ptace?l'm sure that these and some others cross your minds. For some, thelast thought.may be ,oremost. Why do it in the lirst place? Where does that money go any-'way? What good will it do us? Well have no lear. l, your friendly District Aide-de-Camp,am going to put down some leeble words to erplain iust why it is so important to chartaeach yeat.

Chartering brings a'host 0l tangible evidences. Your outpost reeeives an attractive certili-cate of charterlif you are new), or a renewal (if you have chartered before), typed by theloving hands of yours truly. lt looks iust fine in a fratne and can be proudly displayed inyour Royal Rang6r meeting room. The leaders and the boys each receive membership cardsindicating their particular group. Boys are very proud of cards that show that they belongto something. The boys receive a quarterly publication qalled "High Adventure" while theleaders get the "Dispatch." These magazines are $OOd. I enjoy reading both. The leadersget assorted pages of paper work to keep the district updated on their oulpost. Numerous6rochures give pertindnt information about Royal Rangers. Topping it olf is a letter fiomthe national office congratulating the outpost for chartering or rechartering. New charters,in addition to the above listed items, receive volume one of the Royal Ranger Bible Study,a unilorm guide, examples ol "High Adventures" and "Dispatch" and the basic POW WOWbooklet.

I uved the POW WOW update book until now. Both new charters and renewals get it. Thisis sent only to chartered outposts. lf an outpost is not chartered with the district, it cannotoarticipate legally in the District POW W0W, held each year. This booklet contains informa-iion cdncerni-ng ihe cunent POW W0W, such as the theme, where it will be held, whenit will be, howhuch it will cost, what to bring, what activities will be presented, and thecompetitive games to be played. You need this book to prepare lor POW lY0W.

Chartering produces other good effects not readily seen by the local outposts' The dishictcan keep a more accurate census 0n how many churches are chartered and active as rellas how many boys and leaders are out there acros the state. Chartering gtves a more ac'curate picture of the Royal Rangers organization throughout the disbict.

The dishict gets a small percentage ol each charter fee, but most ol it goes t0 the natiqnaloffice. The Royal Rangers program depends upon the chartering money brought,in acrosthe country. The peopie up there in Springfield don't have plush salaries and offices lromthis money. lt goes back into materials and helps.

Most important is the concept of working towards the whole. We belong to promote thcwellare dl boys. By chartering, those boys belong to the greaiest boy's organization .on thisEarth. By chirteri'ng, we show unity in our organization and churches..By chartering westand together to bi counted as a part, a part to promote the good of the whole' RoyalRangers is a proglam inspired by God. And I want to be a part; I want to do my share.

So, this then is a brief glimpse of the total picture. loin us. Charter and help to present

Christ to boys in the United States and all around the World. This is a noble cause.
