TH AN K* YOU by Pat Weaver Monterey • The Monterey Girl Scoiis would like to thank the Culver Community and the Culver, Leiters Ford and Kewanna areas for the help thei* received in collecting pop tops for the Kidney Foundation. The goal was set at 20,000 tops and due to the over- whelming response from the people we reset a new goal of 40,000 tops. This goal has been reached, thanks to you. Some very special help came from the Kewanna School students who con- tributed 6,000 tops! Marlene Mahler was responsible for the delivery- of these from the Kewanna area. Thanks Marlene. A special thanks to John and Carol Elliott who have supported us through this proiect and collected several thousand pop tops in tne office. Thanks also to Arlene Nix for supporting us. Carol Smith and Sara Westfall, Monterey Scouts both collected over 3,000 tops each, other girls in the troop collected about 1.000 eacn. Thanks girls. We will be delivering these tops to Winamac on Friday. Dcc. 21st. Thanks to Mrs. Milo for seeing that these will be taken to the recycling plant as a Christ- mas present for someone who needs a dialysis machine They are worth 1 second for each top. This project was started because the girls had to do a good deed for the community in order to earn the right to make up a badge of their own. Tne badge will be named the "Helping Hands'* and each girl had to collect pop tops and also they had to adopt a Senior Citizen for the school year. Since all the girls in the troop have done both these deeds they all will receive their badge. The girls will be visiting the Nursing Home for Christmas where thev will be giving the patient a greeting card and then singing Christmas Carols later. We then will return to Monterey for homemade pizza and hot chocolate with the help of some mothers. The girls will be caroling in Monterey later that same evening and then refreshments will be served before returning to their homes We hope that through our projects that somebody will nave a better Christmas. Maybe the person that needs the Dialysis Machine or maybe one of the adopted senior citizens that would not have been remembered on Christmas or maybe some one from the Nursing Home that will iust enjoy the company ol young people. We feel that these projects have been worth while and very rewarding for us. Won't you take time to wish someone a Merry Christmas this year as we Girl Scout from Monterey are wishing each of you a Merry Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. See you next year. 1980 CMA Student Named To All-American Soccer Team Culver - Luis A. Quintana, Culver Military Academy senior, has been named to the second team. Midwest section, of the U. S. Soccer Coaches’ Association All- America team. CMA head Coach John Chadwick was informed of the selection last week by telephone. Quintana was on the third team. Midwest section, All- America. last year. The werful center forward oke his own single season scoring record by scoring 35 goals this year. He had set the previous record. 28 goals, in 1978 which in turn had broken the record he set in 1977, 24 goals Before Quintana, the CMA record was 18 goals in one season. CMA shared the Northern Indiana Soccer Conference title with Argos this year, and Quintana was among three CMA players named to the All-Conference team. The son of Mr. and Mrs. Bernardo Quintana, Mexico City, Quintana hopes to attend the Universidad Nacional Autonomia in Mexico City and major in business administration. His brother. Bernardo, is a 1959 CMA graduate. His father, a noted engineer, encouraged him to play soccer Quintana most admires the playing style of two South American stars, one past and one rising -- Pele, who played for Santos (Brazil) and the New York Cosmos, and Diego Maradona, the 18 year old Argentine sensation of last year’s World (Tup. who plays for Argentines Juniors. Although Quintana has seen American players improving during his tiirec years on the CMA varsity, he thinks their skill level is not as high as Europeans’ and Latin Americans.’ “ American players are much stronger, but they don't have the skills.” he says. “ They play rough, and use their bodies a lot." American soccer probably will evolve like German soccer, he thinks, with less emphasis on finesse and technique The U. S. Soccer Coaches’ Association elects the All- America team by vote of its members. The entire All- America team will be an- nounced at the U.S.SC.A. national convention in January. Part 6 - “ Dollars and Sense,” your inflation guide.

W hat does the fall o f the dollar have to do with inflation?

In recent years, the value o f the dollar has declined in comparison with the currency o f many other industrialized nations. One reason is that we have been importing more than wc have been exporting, especially

costly foreign crude oil. Since our “ cheaper” dollars buy less overseas, many o f the goods we import cost more, adding to our inflation rate. A t the same time. U.S. manufacturers o f similar goods - cars for exam ple - can raise their prices and still remain com petitive with higher priced foreign products.

Sw ain broke the L ions’ dry spell at the 3 :2 1 m ark but both te a m s tra d e d points until halftim e which ended with the score knotted at 26 all.

It w as C u lver’s turn to run up a sm all lead a s the third quarter began. F o r the first five m inutes, the C a v s held on to b rief four point leads at 32-28 and 34-30. Brem en c a m e b ack a n d re g a in e d control a fte r which the two squads aga in traded baskets until the horn sounded and Brem en w a s ahead by one point 39-38.

F o r the first four m inutes of the final qu arter, each

team exhibited fine offenses. E a c h w a s a g g r e s s iv e yet patient. N either team took unnecessary shots and often drew fouls when try in g to work the ball inside.

Culver tied the score at 39 just as the quater got und e rw a y . B re m e n then co n n ected on tw o shots, building the lead back to four, but that didn’t last long a s C harles H arris and Ja so n Young hit a basket and free throw respectively to close the m argin to one at 43-42.

A fter that period the C ava liers went into a 3 minute 15 second dry period while the Lions notched nine points in that tim e period. To add insult to in jury , the last two Lion buckets during that period cam e on fast breaks by Sw ain and M uncy when the C ava liers defense broke down. Doll then called a tim e oul regroup his ch arges.

A n a r e g r0Up th ey did, H a r r i s , J e f f F o u s t Y o u n g e a c h s c o re d q u ick e a sy baskets as the Cavs defense cam e to life forcing Brem en to turn the ball over, cutting the spread to 54-50 with 40 seconds left.

The B rem en coach called tim e out to calm his squad down and take a w a y som e of C u v e r ’s m om en tu m . H is plan worked equally a s well a s the Lions broke the press and forced Culver to foul Sw ain, w holut'the first 01 a 1 and 1 with 26 seconds left in the gam e.

H arris then scored on a tip in but C ulver w a s forced to foul A dam s with fiv e seconds left and he also hit the front end of a 1 and 1 to g iv e the L io n s a n o th e r four point m argin at 56-52. The Lions then let Young get an easy layup at the end to make the fin alscore 56-54.

Young led the C ava liers with 19 points and a gam e high 1 1 rebounds.

A rgos - Sharon Mevis greeted the A rgos seniors on M onday. D ecem ber 17 as they arrived at the Argos United Methodist Church. It seem ed everyone w as glad to get inside and out o f the cold. Sharon asked how many had their Christm as trees up, and

-fyow many had all their gifts bought and wrapped. Most had that job ali done.

The ill mem bers were: Hazel Thompson, who is with her daughter; and Irma W agoner, who had surgery on her eye. Some of our m em bers have ieft for Florida and others are preparing to go. This weather will help them make up their minds to go now. A letter, written by Nellie Lefrcrt, who is in Florida. was read.

Then Sharon introduced Frances La'l urner who had a display of old canning ja rs on a table. The first and oldest was dated 1850. He said the First ja rs were made w hen Napolean Bonapart asked for someone to make something to preserve fruit for the arm y. He offered a prize and a crockery jar w as made. The lid w as sealed down with sealing wax. Later John Mason patented a jar made

A rgos - Wool and lamb producers must submit their sales slips from 1979 wool and unsnorn lamb marketings and file an application before they can receive their incentive paym ents, William E . Elliott, Chairperson o f the M arshall County Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation (ASC) Committee, said. They have until Ja n uary 3 1 to file and avoid late paym ents.

The support price for 1979 shorn wool marketings is $ 1 . 1 5 per ipound and S I .94 per pound tor mohair. Elliott said pulled wool will continue to be supported at a level com parable to the support price for shorn wool through paym ents on unshorn lambs.

Shorn wool payments are

o f g la ss and this too had a lid that had to be sealed with w ax. later he m ade one that had a zink lid and sealed with a lid and a rubber ring. Some old cans had a wire spring to hold the lids down. The Ball Company started making jars and since the Mason jar com pany had the patent they had to make their own jars and several other small com panics were bought out so they wouldn't have to pay M ason any royalty. Frances has all kinds o f jars from the larges to the midget. Also one milk glass that w as made mostly for show. He has green , blue, and am ber jars, at least 200 or 300 of them. M any questions w e re ' asked and answered by him. We thank him for a ve ry interesting morning.

Sharon had the noon time prayer and then on to the dining mom where Lorilee Thompson. Lida Thompson, Inez E ley and Vi Ward served the meal. The Hospital Auxiliary had the tables beautifully decorated. Several old coal oil lamps were on the tables and tinsel en twined the length of the tables with a Christmas theme. They also furnished pretty plates o f candy as door prizes. These were won by

based on a percentage of each producer s return from sales. The percentage is the amount required to ra ise the national average price received by all producers for shorn wool in 1979 up to the support price of $ 1.1 :? a pound. Shorn wool prices averaged between 80 and 85 cents per pound in 1979.

According to Elliott, mohair paym ents will be calculated in a manner similar to wool. However, these

aym ents probably will not e necessary in 1980 as it

appears that the average market price received by producers in the open market will be higher than the support price.

A s o f December 12th. thirty-two local producers had filed for their 1979 wool incentive payments.
