FSU AT A GLANCE

From an opening day enrollment of 57 students, Frostburg StateUniversity has grown to a present day enrollment of over 5,000 students. Its physical plant, once limited to a single building, Old Main, which

housed classrooms and a library, has also grown to over 30 facilities includingclassroom buildings, residence halls, the Lewis J. Ort Library, the Harold J.Cordts Physical Education Center, the Lane Center, and the Performing ArtsCenter, situated on 255 beautiful acres.

Opened in 1902 as State Normal School No. 2, the University owes its exis-tence to the tenacity of J. Benson Oder, editor of the Frostburg Mining Journal, and the citizens of Frostburg who, in spite of political barriers, raised funds andpurchased the site on which the University is located.

Principal Edmund Dandridge Murdaugh and three faculty instructed the firstNormal School class; in addition, the other faculty taught 151 children in theModel School. The Normal School students, who were high school studentshaving to meet no requirements other than age (girls, 16; boys, 17), had butone two-year course of study, elementary education. The curriculum consistedof Latin, mathematics, history, rhetoric and literature, natural and physical sci-ences, drawing, music, calisthenics, psychology, philosophy of education, phi-losophy of school management, Pedagogy, Observation, Practice Work andPrimary Manual Training.

Over the years, the name of the institution has reflected the changes in thescope of its educational mission. In 1935, the State Normal School No. 2became the State Teachers College at Frostburg, a four-year college whichoffered a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education. In 1963, the namebecame Frostburg State College, and finally in 1987, with the strong support ofthe local civic and business community, became Frostburg State University, anindication of its growing resources, diversity and excellence in educationalopportunities for the region and the state.

In 1988, FSU became a constituent institution of the University System ofMaryland, comprised of 11 of the state's 13 public institutions. Expanding tomeet the educational needs of the region, the FSU Center in Hagerstown wasalso established in 1988 to offer upper-level bachelor's degree coursework andgraduate programs. The University also opened, in 1990, a permanent locationfor the Frederick MBA program.

Throughout its growth, the University has emphasized excellence in teach-ing. Over 80% of the full-time faculty hold Ph.D.s or terminal degrees from insti-tutions that are among the most prestigious in the nation. Faculty scholarshiphas led to scholarly books, manuals and journals, as well as numerous articlesand reviews. This excellence in faculty has resulted in superior results for stu-dents. FSU has been ranked first among its peers for the number of doctoratesper 100 baccalaureate degrees awarded. In the same study, FSU was rankedsecond in the percentage of national, prestigious awards received by faculty. These have included Fulbrights and significant grants from the NationalEndowment for the Humanities, the National Endowment for the Arts and othernational associations.

At the same time, the University has developed comparable excellence inacademic programs, research, consulting, cultural and athletic events, andfacilities. In recent years the campus has consistently received a superior rat-ing, the highest state award given for facilities and maintenance. In addition,FSU was also recently ranked safest college campus in the state.

Today, the University's mission and services have expanded significantly.Over 400 full-time administrators and support staff, and more than 200 full-timefaculty serve the educational needs of students who come not only fromthroughout the United States, but also the world. 2006-07 Bobcat Basketball2006-07 Bobcat Basketball22

Webb Hatch begins his eighth season as the head men's basketball coach at Frostburg StateUniversity as well as his 33rd year of coaching.

Over the last six seasons, Hatch has led the Bobcats to an 93-97 overall record, one AlleghenyMountain Collegiate Conference Tournament championship, a pair of AMCC Tournament second-place finishes and one Eastern College Athletic Conference South Region Runner-Up showing.

Last season, FSU finished with a 12-15 overall record and an 8-10 AMCC mark. The Bobcatshad a promising start, opening the year 3-1 and taking fifth place in the Pride of MarylandTournament. FSU fell to McDaniel in the opening round but captured wins over Salisbury (70-62)

and Hood (65-63). However, Frostburg State would struggle through the regular season and earn a No. 6 seed in the AMCCTournament. In the opening round, the Bobcats defeated the No. 3 seeded Penn State Behrend Lions 59-54. In the second round,FSU fell to No. 2 seeded Pitt-Greensburg, 69-54.

Hatch and the Bobcats finished 14-12 overall and 9-9 in the AMCC in 2004-05, dropping five games by single digits. FSU was thesixth seed in the AMCC Tournament and fell to third-seeded Lake Erie 85-67 in the first round. The Bobcats owned a 13-6 overall and

8-4 AMCC mark but lost two starters due to violations of team rules and dropped six of their final seven games to end the year. Junior forward/center Daniel Ryley was FSU’slone selection to the All-AMCC squad, earning second-team honors.

In 2003-04, Hatch led a young Bobcat squad to a 15-13 overall record and a strong run to the AMCC Championship game, where FSU dropped a heart-breaking 44-42overtime contest to La Roche. The Bobcats won their last two regular-season AMCC games to secure the No. 3 seed and a first-round home game in the AMCC Tournament, where it edged Lake Erie 67-66. The Bobcats then toppled No. 2 Pitt-Greensburg 57-51 in the semifinals before dropping the title game in overtime for the second time in threeseasons.

Hatch joined the Frostburg State staff in late August 1999 and needed just one year to turn around the Bobcats. After a 6-19 overall record and a 2-10 mark in the AMCCin his first season, Hatch’s second squad went 20-10 (8-4 AMCC), the biggest improvement from the previous season by any NCAA Division III program in the country.

The Bobcats captured their first-ever AMCC Tournament championship and earned a berth to the ECAC Southern Region Championship Tournament for the eighth time inschool history. FSU made a thrilling run to the title game, downing Bethany (W.Va.), 99-83, and edging Alvernia, 77-71, before falling to King's, 70-60, in the championship con-test.

The Bobcats ranked 30th in the nation in scoring (82.0 ppg) and 34th in rebounding margin (+5.5 rpg). The 20 wins were the second-highest in program history (trailing onlythe 1970-71 squad that finished 24-4), and the AMCC title was the first conference tournament championship in team history. FSU also set single-season team records forrebounds (1,285) and assists (463).

The team also improved its scoring average to 83.1 points per game and outscored opponentsby an average of 5.3 points per game.

FSU's combined 36 wins over the 2000-01 and 2001-02 seasons is the second-highest two-year total in theprogram's history (trailing only the 37 wins from 1970-1972).

In 2002-03, the Bobcats endured a tough 1-6 start before rebounding with five wins in their next sevengames. Season-ending injuries to two key players and the loss of a third player to military service took their tollas the Bobcats dropped six straight contests.

However, FSU hung tough to win four of its final six regular-season games before losing in overtime in thefirst round of the AMCC Tournament to finish with 10-16 overall and 5-7 in the AMCC. The Bobcats sufferednine losses by 10 points or less.

FROSTBURG STATE UNIVERSITY

2006-007 SEASON PREVIEW

2006-07 Bobcat Basketball2006-07 Bobcat Basketball 55

The 2006-07 season will be a challenge for the Frostburg state men's basketballteam as it looks to replace three starters from last year's squad and reclaim theAllegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference title.

Gone are post players and all-conference selections Dan Ryley and MarcusMcIntyre as well as Brian Owen. Ryley and McIntyre were two of the top reboundersin the AMCC while Owen was second on the team in scoring.

Head Coach Webb Hatch, who is in his eighth season at the helm of the pro-gram, will look to seniors Dale DeBerry, Jr. (Upper Marlboro, Md./RiverdaleBaptist) and Jade Belt (Baltimore, Md./Perry Hall) to lead the team.

Deberry has been solid in the preseason and is the projected starter at the two-guard position. He started six of the final eight games of the 2005-06 season andaveraged 6.3 points per game. In the final contest of the regular season, DeBerryscored a season-high 17 points as the Bobcats fell to eventual AMCC Tournamentrunner-up Pitt-Greensburg.

Belt, who will add depth to the post position this year, is a good defender thatrebounds well. Last season, he appeared in eight games for FSU.

Frostburg State has arguably its most talent in its four juniors; Brian Green, Jr.(Baltimore, Md./Perry Hall), Keith Hazel (Weirton, W.Va./Weir), Antione McCall(Essex, Md./Eastern Tech) and Jermaine Kapombe (Washington, D.C./Friendly).

Green enters this season as FSU's starting point guard. He returns to theBobcats after suffering a season-ending injury 11 games into last season. Greene, who possesses good ball handling and defensive skills, averaged 11.9 points and 2.7assists per game in 2005-06.

Hazel enters the year having started the most games (18) of any returning play-er on this year's roster. He is a very talented athlete who can run, jump, shoot anddefend well and he possesses good three-point shooting ability. Hazel averaged 11.5points per game last season, including 14.4 a contest over the final 16 games of theseason. He earned AMCC Player of the Week honors last season after scoring aseason-high 26 points against Medaille on Jan. 14.

McCall returns to the FSU lineup after playing for the Bobcats in the 2003-04and 2004-05 seasons. Since his last time on the court, he has gained weight andbecome stronger and will compete for a starting spot in the frontcourt. In his last sea-son in a Frostburg State uniform, he played in 20 games and averaged 3.8 points pergame.

Kapombe is a transfer from Prince George's Community College. He will com-pete for time at both the guard and forward positions.

Sophomore Jonathan Forster (Taneytown, Md./Francis Scott Key) will alsocompete for time in the backcourt. Forster is a good shooter after developing hisskills in the offseason and he will see significant time.

Sophomores Carter Simmons (Annapolis, Md./Southern) and Juan Wansley(Odenton, Md./Arundel) will both battle for time on the court in the post.

Simmons is a solid left-handed player who appeared in 19 games last year. Herecorded season-highs in points (6) and rebounds (6) against Medaille on Feb. 10.

Wansley is a solid post player with good ability, despite being undersized. He isa hard working and coachable player who will add depth to the team. He played insix games in 2005-06.

The coaching staff also welcomes in five very talented freshmen in BenTubman (Gaithersburg, Md./Watkins Mill), Paul Shockley (Leesburg,Va./Heritage), Anthony Guy (Washington, D.C./Good Counsel), Brandon Gilliam(Yonkers, N.Y./Yonkers) and Ramiro Ramos (Edgewood, Md./Edgewood).

Tubman is in his second year at FSU after not playing for the team last season.

He has been a pleasant surprise in the preseason and should see significant time inthe post. Tubman is a tough inside player with great rebounding skills and a quickfirst step.

Shockley is a good shooter and is a very fundamentally sound player who willsee a ton of playing time in the backcourt in 2006-07. He was a second team all-dis-trict and first-team all-extra player as a senior at Heritage High School.

Guy is also a very fundamentally sound player and should compete for playingtime at the point guard spot. He has good vision and he passes and defends well.

Gilliam is also a very coachable and hard working player. While at Yonkers HighSchool, he earned All-Lower Hudson Conference honors as a senior. That same yearhe was named to the Mamaroneck Holiday Classic All-Tournament Team.

Ramos is a good left-handed post player who will battle for time. He was an all-county selection while at Edgewood High School.

Frostburg State opens the season for the second-consecutive year in theProvident Bank Pride of Maryland Division III Scholarship Basketball Tournament.FSU opens with Goucher in the opening round at Bobcat Arena before traveling toGoucher for the final two-days of the tournament.

FSU's non-conference schedule will also be rough. The Bobcats face reigningUSA South Conference Champion Christopher Newport as well as Shenandoah,Waynesburg and Mary Washington.

In the AMCC, Frostburg State was selected in the preseason to finish fourth.Penn State Behrend was chosen as the league's favorite followed by Lake Erie andHilbert.

For the second consecutive year, Frostburg State opens its season at the Provident Bank Pride of Maryland Division III Scholarship Basketball Tournament. The nine teamsin the state of Maryland compete in a three-day tournament for the right to be crowned, "Division III Maryland State Champion."

Bill Nelson, men's basketball coach at Johns Hopkins, and Brett Adams, athletic director and men's basketball coach at Villa Julie, came up with the idea more than 10years ago. The plan was to model the tournament after the very successful 40-year old JP Morgan Chase Scholarship Basketball Tournament in Rochester, NY. The tourna-ment combined collegiate athletic competition, community involvement, and academic scholarship and recognition. Nelson had been a participant of the "Chase" tournamentduring his tenure at Nazareth College in the late 70's and early 80's. Adams and Nelson felt that the state of Maryland presented a unique opportunity, due to the ideal num-ber of men's Division III teams.

Provident Bank will donate $1000 to the general scholarship fund of each of the nine colleges and universities participating in the Provident Pride of Maryland Tournament. One student from each school will be selected to receive the award, with the criteria for selection defined as:

1. The student must be a Maryland, Virginia, or Washington, DC resident. 2. The student must exemplify the Provident Way: Integrity, Caring, Excellence, Partnership and Results Driven. 3. The student must be enrolled full-time. 4. The student must be an upperclassman. 5. The student must maintain a 3.2 GPA in his/her area of study. 6. The student must make a good-faith effort to be present at the check presentation ceremony during the Provident Bank Pride of Maryland Scholarship Basketball Tournament. The nine Pride of Maryland teams are: Frostburg State, Goucher, Hood, Johns Hopkins, McDaniel, Salisbury, St. Mary’s (Md.), Villa Julie & Washington.
