Frosts - A Fresh Approach to Motoring

FROSTS CARS LIMITEDThe 1997 Brighton National Speed Trials promises to be an exhilarating occasion and Frostsare pleased to continue with their sponsorship of this prestigious event, especially as we arecelebrating our 45th anniversary this year.

Since the opening of the first Frosts garage in 1952, we have been offering advice andhelping the Sussex community throughout each stage of their motoring lives. Still a privatelyrun firm today, we are continuing to fulfil the needs of our customers by offering a completemotorist's package, including Sales, Service, Parts and Body Repair, in five AuthorisedFranchises; Jaguar, Chrysler, Jeep, Lotus and Vauxhall.

With a long tradition of customer care and satisfaction, we have developed into the largestand most progressive, privately owned Vauxhall Dealership in the county. Our extensive andmodern showrooms at both Shoreham and Haywards Heath offer a full range of cars andvans, including the new Sintra MPV and Arena vans to suit the business user. Ourprofessionalism is further reflected as an approved Network Q dealership, an Approved FleetSpecialist and providing a Motability Speciality, which affords reliable and comfortabletransport for the less able in the community. Also based in Shoreham is the Frosts Chrysler/Jeep/Lotus showroom, housing the superbrange of Grand Cherokees and the Classic Cherokee, the Neon and Voyager - all this togetherwith the exhilarating Lotus Esprit VB and the fun-packed Elise.

At 1-5 Franklin Road, Portslade is the prestigious Jaguar Sales, Service and Parts Dealership. This superbly equipped, state of the art premises, houses some twenty new and usedJaguars and is waiting with anticipation for the delivery of the first new Jaguar VB Saloon.

Over the years, company policy has advocated reinvesting profits to improve customerservice and this is achieved with the addition of our Body Repair Centre at Small Dole.Encompassing specialist technology and equipment of such a high standard that we havereached the status of Approved Insurance Repairers for the country's 12 major insurancecompanies, enabling customers to benefit from instant estimates and the carrying out of mostmajor repairs on the spot. The Centre is the only Approved Jaguar Body Repair Centre ofExcellence in Sussex, a Vauxhall Approved Centre and one of only four Lotus Approved BodyRepair Centres in the country.

Of course none of this would have been possible without the support of our customers in thelocal community and for this reason we have dedicated ourselves to sponsoring local events, such as the Brighton National Speed Trials, the South of England Show and the Adur BathTub Race, as well as supporting many local charities. Frosts have also entered Motorsport bysupporting local racing driver, Mark Ticehurst, in the highly competitive Vauxhall Vectra Sri V6Challenge, one of the main support races to the British Touring Car Championships (BTCC).

So even more than before, the professionalism of Frosts, together with the classic quality ofJaguar, Chrysler, Jeep, Lotus and Vauxhall guarantee you unequalled excellence in themotoring world.

'Freddie' wishes to thank you for your continued support, and would like to extend his bestwishes to both spectators and competitors for a successful and enjoyable day.

Brighton Speed Trials - A Mystery Solved

It is well known that the Brighton Speed Trials for motor cars first took placein 1905 and was not run again until 1923 and 1924. We at Brighton & Hove MotorClub revived the event in 1932 and have run it every year since apart from acouple of enforced interruptions.

We have, however, always been puzzled by the fact that in 1923 the Brighton& Hove Herald described that year's event as "the first ... since 1913" whereaswe thought they had last been held in 1905. Anyway, we took that reference witha pinch of salt until earlier this year when we were shown a certain 1988magazine. In this publication there appeared under the heading "Flashback - 75years ago" a picture of motor-cycles racing eastward along Madeira Drive in whatthe caption said was Brighton Speed Trials of 1913.

As we were unaware of any motor car trials between 1905 and 1923 thiscalled for urgent investigation and where better to start than Brighton's excellentReference Library in Church Street. There we found that the 1st July 1913 issueof The Brighton Standard and Fashionable Visitors List revealed that the Councilhad been asked by the Streatham & District Motor Cycle Club to be allowed tohold a speed contest in Brighton and that the Council proposed to let them do soon Madeira Drive in the following September. The library also produced the 27thSeptember 1913 issue of The Brighton Herald which reported that the event hadin fact taken place on the previous Saturday.

So the mystery of the 1913 event was solved; it appeared to have been ahighly successful event, run in heats but not timed, and one of the entrants wenoticed was Mr H.F.S. Morgan, a name famous in motoring and motorcycle sportto this day. The event was, however, not of "our" series of mainly car eventswhich we call Brighton Speed Trials.

Today's event is again sponsored by Frosts Cars Limited, for whosewholehearted support we continue to be so grateful. With their help we can allhope for an enjoyable day's sport and for the success of The Frosts BrightonNational Speed Trials of 1997.

BRIGHTON SPEED TRIALS 1997 - The Motor Cycles

Hardly had the echoes of last year's trials faded across the sea than our hosts the Brightonand Hove Motor Club picked up the gauntlet and started work organising this year's event; thatperiod of time is needed to keeg this famous old event in being. For myself the advent of the eventis the annual telephone call from Tont Johnstone, the man now driving the eveht forward, chivvyingme up to get scribbling this small piece for this year's programme. I believe that the essentialattraction of the Trials is that they represent pure tradition in Motor and Motor cycle sport, unchangingto the extent that each successive event is really just a continuation of the previous year's. Being atraditionalist and proud of our Flag I treasure the continuity of what are extended battles betweencompetitors year on year.

So, where were we? Keep an eye open for last year's main protagonists - Dave Holland whowill want to settle a score, Jeff Dowsett who won't want to let him get away with it and Dave Hugheswho will try to spoil their party. All three riders cracked into the low nines last year, all on GSXSuzukis and all big bore jobs, from Dowsett's 11OOccup to Holland's giant of 1408cc.

Another box of fireworks may well come from Dave Goddard's Baker Suzuki which seems tohave a solus upon the Sussex Sidecar Trophy, having made a habit of winning this for some yearsnow. The outfit is long, lean and mean and whether or not due to being worn out each year getsrebored to a bigger capacity each season; it is now running at 1300cc and quicker than ever.

Yet another tradition kept up is that by'Veteran Basil Keys. A competitor since way back in1933, he is not on his big J.A.P' twin but, out of respect for his years, now on a 350cc Yamaha. Heis always stylish and still very quick so give a cheer to a man who must be the longest serving

competitor in the trials. Always rapid and one who possesses one of the fastest gear shifters In thebusiness is Jayne Glover who has now forsaken her swift and busy little "Yammy" Stroker for one ofSuzuki's best, an RG50010ur. Vicious is peljlaps hardly the description of the power output of theseengines, so will Jayrre be able to keep this beast under control? You betcha! Mike Grainger will beback on the track again thiS!year. Holder of the European bike land speed record, Mike will not beon the record bike but will be changing allegiance to a Honda CBR 1100;will he be able to crack hisKawasaki times of the past?

In memory of UJeJlKSn,Motor Sport's old and revered Continental Correspondent TonyMadgwick will be runlllng Jenks' old sprint hill climb Tribsa as a tribute to that much missed characterof both motor and motorcyele sport. While on the subject of npstalgia lake note of Chris Vlman ridingthe oldest machine in today's event, a 1923 Brooklands 350cc Zenith. Hand changenotwithstanding, this old bike has a surprising tum of seed once fetched into top gear and Chris, suitably attired In the traaitional white cotto boiler suit over his leathers, can wring the best from thisglorious old bike -true t@dition and pure nostalgia of those glory days on the concrete bowl. Anotheroldster is 80 odd ;6.lanMorgan up on his incredibly narrow 500 four-valve Budge dating back to theearly thirties. Their performance belies the combined years of both rider anti bike.

I trul~ hope that the mix of both tradition and current machine fireworks will provide us all witha good day s sport.

It ooly re ains for roe on behalf of ttfe Vintage Motor Cycle Club to pass our thanks to theBrighton and Hove Motor Club tor their continued invitations to Frosts for their valued support, to theCorporation of Brighton f0r keeping alive tpe spirit 0 SIr Harry Preston's dream come true Specialthanks to all those stalwarts w 0 behiod the scenes work so hard all year long to gel this historic oldevent on the roao, not forgetting those devoted wives and girl friends who put up with all ournonsense and whp are always presen With the oelping hand. And finally to all you good folk whoattend and watch the action going on do below rom your perch up on the "Shelt". ~y heartfeltthaoks for your upport enjoy the day by the sea and long may it continue.
