Why This Works — Painting the Crayola ® Model Magic ® with Q-tips ® Cotton Swabs won’t leave brush strokes.
Insulation (extruded polystyrene) foam is quite easy to form and cut. It comes in a variety of thicknesses. It typically comes in two colors pink and blue. The pink extruded polystyrene (XPS) is produced by Owens Corning ® Foamular ® and the blue XPS is produced by Dow™ Styrofoam™.
Safety Precautions Always read and follow all manufacturers’ directions. Always double-check the SDS (Safety Data Sheets) for each product used and make sure the components of the product are not harmful. Companies often change the chemical makeup of their products over the years. Don’t assume that because you checked the SDS sheets once to see that the product is safe, it will always be safe.

To create the grapes, roll pieces of Crayola ® Model Magic into ovals ranging in size from ¾” to 1” in length. For more realism, vary the size of the grapes. Let harden for at least two hours. Once the clay is dry, scumble Rosco ® Off Broadway™ Yellow Ochre and small amount of Chrome Oxide Green on grapes with a Q-tips ® Cotton Swab. After the paint is dry, lightly mist with Design Master ® Glossy Wood Tone Spray. Spritzing the grapes with Glossy Wood Tone will leave brown speckles often found on green grapes. Apply one coat of Rosco ® Clear Acrylic Gloss.
To create the blueberries, roll pieces of Crayola ® Model Magic into balls ranging in size from ¼” to ½” in diameter. For more realism, vary the size of the blueberries. Let harden for at least two hours. Once the clay is dry, mix Rosco ® Off Broadway™ Navy Blue and Purple to create the deep dark blue-purple of blueberries, paint on berries with a Q-tips ® Cotton Swab. Let the paint dry, then coat with a glaze of Rosco ® Off Broadway™ White. Watering down the white paint with water to the consistency of skim milk, in this case, creates a glaze. Apply one coat of Rosco ® Clear Acrylic Gloss.

Paint kiwi slices with Rosco ® Off Broadway™ Emerald Green mixed with a little Yellow Ochre.
Kiwi and Cantaloupe shapes cut out of extruded polystyrene foam
To create kiwi slices, cut ¾” Rigid Extruded Polystyrene Foam in 2” hexagons using a utility knife or X-acto ® knife. Shape the edges of the foam with a Surform ® Shaver™ or sandpaper.
Kiwi base painted with emerald green and
yellow ochre
Kiwi painted with a lighter center
While paint is still wet, add Rosco ® Off Broadway™ White to the center of each kiwi slice and blend into the green base coat in a starburst pattern. Once the paint is dry, place small dabs of glue to the area where the kiwi seeds should be. Use tweezers to place tiny black seed beads. Let dry. Apply one coat of Rosco ® Clear Acrylic Gloss. Lightly mist with Design Master ® Glossy Wood Tone Spray to tone the kiwi slices to match research.

If ¾” thick slices are too thick, the foam can be split in half by using a Japanese Ryoba saw or utility knife.
Cutting cantaloupe out of extruded polystyrene foam
To create the cantaloupe slices without the rind, draw a crescent shape no larger than 6” in length on the ¾” extruded polystyrene foam and cut out with an X-acto knife ® . Shape the edges of the crescent-shaped foam with a Surform ® Shaver™ or sandpaper.
Splitting foam in half for thinner cantaloupe slices
Mix Rosco ® Off Broadway™ white, orange,
and yellow ochre to create a base coat for
the cantaloupe slices.

Base-coated cantaloupe and grapes
Mix Rosco ® Off Broadway™ Scenic Paint White, Orange, and Yellow Ochre together to create a base coat for the cantaloupe slices. Paint foam slices using a sponge or Q-tips ® Cotton Swabs. Applying paint with Q-tips ® Cotton Swabs or sponges will create a more even coat than using a paintbrush. This may take a couple coats until there is no longer foam showing through the coat of paint.
Lightly mist with Design Master ® Glossy Wood Tone Spray to tone the melon slices to match research. After that is dry, apply one coat of Rosco ® Acrylic Gloss. The gloss will create visual sensation of moisture on the cantaloupe.
Arrange fruit on plate.
Completed fruit tray.
