In1867,sevenBlackmen-MatthewN.Leary,AndrewJ.Chesnutt,Robert Simmons, George Grainger, Thomas Lomax, Nelson Carter,andDavidA.Bryant-paid$136fortwolotsonGillespieStreetandconverted themselves into a self-perpetuating Board of Trustees tomaintain this property permanently as a site for the education of BlackchildreninFayetteville.GeneralO.O.HowardoftheFreedman’sBureau,oneofthebest-knownfriendsofBlackeducation,erectedabuilding on this site, and the institution became known as the Howard School. By a legislative act in 1877, the North Carolina General Assembly provided for the establishment of a Normal School for the education of Black teachers. The Howard School was chosen as the most promising because of its successful record during the previous tenyears.Itwasdesignatedateachertraininginstitution,anditsname
waschangedtotheStateColoredNormalSchool.FiveChiefAdministrativeOfficersservedforrelativelyshortperiodsuntil1899:RobertL.Harris,Principal(1867-1880),CharlesW.Chesnutt,Principal(1880-1883),EzekielEzra(E.E.)Smith,Principal(1883-1888),GeorgeWilliams,Principal(1888-1895),E.E.Smith,Principal(1895-1898),andtheRev.L.E.Fairley,Principal(1898-1899).
In1899,Dr.Smithreturnedtotheinstitution.Underhispresidency,theschoolgrewfromthreeroomsinasmallframestructuretoaphysicalplantoftenbuildingsonafifty-acretractofland.Inordertopayfortheland,Dr.Smith,alongwithF.D.Williston,E.N.Williams,J.G.SmithandDr.P.N.Melchor,endorsedanotefor$3,000.00.ThenotewasrenewedseveraltimesandeventuallypaidoffbyDr.Smith.HelaterdeededthelandtotheState.Dr.Smithretiredin1933attheageof80withmorethan40yearsofservice to the institution.
Dr.J.WardSeabrooksucceededDr.SmithandunderhispresidencytheschoolbecameFayettevilleStateTeachersCollege,thereafterbeingauthorizedtogranttheBachelorofSciencedegreeinEducation.Thecollegereceivedbothstateandregionalaccreditationin1947.
Dr. Seabrook retired in 1956 andwas succeededbyDr. Rudolph Jones.DuringDr. Jones’ administration, the curriculumwasexpandedtoincludemajorsinsecondaryeducationandprogramsleadingtodegreesoutsidetheteachingfield.ThenameoftheschoolwaschangedtoFayettevilleStateCollegein1963.Also,underDr.Jones’leadership,sixadditionsweremadetothephysicalplanttoaccommodatearapidlyexpandingenrollment.
In1969,theinstitutionacquireditspresentname,“FayettevilleStateUniversity,”andDr.Charles“A”Lyons,Jr.waselectedpresident.By a legislative act in 1972, Fayetteville State University became a constituent institution of The University of North Carolina System. TheChiefExecutiveOfficer’spositionwasre-titledtoChancellor,withDr.LyonsbecomingthefirstChancelloroftheUniversity.Duringhistenure,thecurriculumwasexpandedtoincludeavarietyofbothbaccalaureateandmaster’slevelprograms.Inaddition,theFortBragg-PopeAFBExtensionCenter,inconjunctionwiththeWeek-EndandEveningCollege,wasestablishedinordertoprovidemilitarypersonnelandotherpersonsemployedfull-timewiththeopportunitytofurthertheireducation.
HISTORY

The general academic structure took its present configuration in 1985when theUniversity became aComprehensive Level IInstitution.Inadditiontoexpandingprogramofferingsandservices,eightbuildingswereaddedtothephysicalplantduringthisperiodtoincludethestate-of-the-artCharlesChesnuttLibrary.
On January 1, 1988, Dr. Lloyd V. Hackley became the eighth ChiefExecutiveOfficeroftheUniversity.Duringhistenure,FSU’sfirstdoctoralprograminEducationalLeadershipwasestablished;andbaccalaureateprogramofferingswerealso increasedto include36disciplines inthearts and sciences, business and economics, and education. The addition for the ultra-modern Business and Economics building and the newHealth, Physical Education and Recreation Complex under-scoredDr.Hackley’s commitment to FSU’s continuedexpansion andgrowth.ChancellorHackleystrengthenedFSU’scommunityoutreach toat-riskchildren in the public schools, establishing numerous scholarship and tutoring/mentoring programs. FSU’s firstmajor capital campaignwasalsocompletedduringDr.Hackley’stenure,andenabledFSUtoincreasethe number of privately funded student scholarships to over 200. On December 31, 1994,Dr.Hackley left his post at FSU to become President of theNorthCarolinaDepartment ofCommunityColleges,thefirstAfrican-Americantoleadthestate’ssystemof59communitycolleges.
Dr.DonnaJ.Benson,AssociateVicePresidentforAcademicAffairsofTheUniversityofNorthCarolinaservedasFSU’s interimChancellorfromJanuary1,1995toNovember14,1995.
Dr.WillisB.McLeod,a1964graduateofFayettevilleStateUniversity,wasappointedChancelloronNovember15,1995bringingover30yearsofprofessionalexperienceinthefieldofeducation.HewastheninthChiefExecutiveOfficerofthe135-year-oldinstitution,andthefirstalumnustoserveasChancellorsinceFSUbecameaconstituentofTheUniversityofNorthCarolina.SeveralmajorinitiativeswereestablishedbyDr.McLeodtoleadFSUintothe21stcenturyandincludedthe“FreshmenYearInitiative”program,majorcampusimprovements,amasterplanfortherevitalizationofMurchisonRoadandseveraloutreacheffortsaimedat forging stronger community ties and regionalpartnershipswithpublic school anduniversity leaders.Dr.McLeod retiredasChancelloronJune30,2003withemeritusstatus.
Dr.T.J.(ThelmaJane)BryanwaselectedbytheUniversityOfNorthCarolinaBoardOfGovernorsonJune18,2003.Dr.BryanstartedherdutiesonJuly1,2003,asthetenthChiefExecutiveOfficerofFayettevilleStateUniversityandthefirstwomanelectedbytheUniversityOfNorthCarolinaBoardOfGovernorstoleadthe136-year-oldinstitutionasChancellor.ShewasalsothefirstAfrican-AmericanwomanappointedasheadofaUniversityofNorthCarolinainstitution.Duringherfour-yeartenure,theuniversityaddedtennewacademicprograms—undergraduateprogramssuchasfirescience,forensicscience,managementinformationsystems,andgenericnursingaswellasmaster’sprogramsincriminaljusticeandteaching.Fullonlinebaccalaureateprogramsincriminaljustice,psychology,andsociologyandafullonlinemaster’sprogramincriminaljusticewereadded,andFSU’sdistance-educationenrollmentscatapultedtothirdinthe16-institutionsystem.Dr.Bryanmandatedthatallprogramsthatareeligibleforspecializedaccreditationpursuesuchstampsofapproval,andaccreditationsweregarneredfromtheCouncilonSocialWorkEducationforthe master of social work program, from the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business for business and accounting programs,andfromtheCouncilonCollegiateNursingEducationforthegenericnursingprogram.CrossCreekEarlyCollegeHighSchoolandFireStation#14wereestablishedonthecampusduringhertenure,whichendedonJuly23,2007.

of the North Carolina Community College System, chancellor and tenured professor of both Fayetteville State University and theUniversityofArkansasatPineBluff,VicePresidentinthe16-campusUniversityofNorthCarolinasystem,chairoftheNorthCarolinaChildAdvocacyInstitute,chairoftheArkansasCivilRightsCommission,andchairofthePresident’sAdvisoryBoardonHistoricallyBlackCollegesandUniversities.Dr.HackleywasalsoafacultymemberintheGovernmentExecutiveInstituteattheUNC-ChapelHillSchoolofbusiness.Dr.HackleyischancelloremeritusofFayettevilleStateUniversity,chairoftheNCMethodistHomeforChildrenandchairmanemeritusoftheNationalCHARACTERCOUNTS!Coalition.SinceJanuary,1997,hehastaughtinorconductedpersonallymorethan3200seminars,workshopsandlecturesinethicsandcharacterdevelopmentthroughoutAmerica and overseas, for children, parents, teachers, coaches, and other persons who work with children, as well as for businesses, universities,variousgovernmentalagenciesandotheryouth-servingorganizations.
JamesA.Anderson,professorofpsychologyandformerviceprovostandvicepresidentattheUniversityofAlbanyinNewYorkiselectedChancellorofFayettevilleStateUniversitybytheBoardofGovernorsofthemulti-campusUniversityofNorthCarolinaonJune9,2008.UnderChancellorAnderson’sleadership,threenewbuildingshavebeenaddedtotheFSUlandscape.Thestate-of-the-artSoutheasternNorthCarolinaNursingEducationandResearchCenter istechnologicallyenhancedtosupportnursingeducationofthe21stcentury.AhighlightofthefacilityistheClinicalSimulationCenterwhereyoucanexperiencethebestinhuman patient simulation. Additionally, FSU has strengthened its partnership with the military and its neighbors at Fort Bragg. FSUhasestablishednewacademicprograms,includingon-lineoptions,tomeettheneedsofcurrentandfuturesoldiersatFt.Bragg. Among the programs is a degree in intelligence studies. FSU actively supports the military by offering classes on campuses onFortBragg,CampLejeune,andSeymourJohnsonAirForceBase,allinNorthCarolina,andFortSamHoustoninTexas.WithpartnershipswithseveninstitutionsofhighereducationinChina,FSUispreparingstudentstobe21stCenturyglobalscholars.Eachyear, students from sister institutions in China come to FSU for study and in return, FSU sends students to China for academic study. AsChancellorAndersonputsit,“nootherhistoricallyblackcollegeoruniversityhasitsfootprintinChinalikeFSU.”InadditiontoChina,FSUhasformulatedpartnershipswithNigeria,France,Tanzania,SouthAfrica,Grenada,andPoland.
