How will I benefit?The programmes will provide you with skills, knowledge and tools to design and implement strategy and/or critically examine the role of innovation in improving safety and quality in a healthcare setting.

How will the programme be delivered?The programmes will be delivered through one-day workshops (five per module) and assessed through a variety of continuous assessment strategies. There will be no examinations. The workshops require a high-level of student engagement and comprise a series of exercises and activities that emphasise the critical evaluation of theory in practice.

Entry requirementsHonours Bachelor’s degree, or equivalent.

Programmes DirectorThe programmes are designed and delivered by Prof. Martin McNamara who is Associate Dean for External Relations at the UCD School of Nursing, Midwifery & Health Systems where he served two terms as Dean and Head between 2010 and 2016.

He is an alumnus of the School, the UCD Michael Smurfit Graduate Business School, the Harvard Kennedy School of Government and the Open University Business School.

He holds qualifications in Strategy, Innovation and Change; Business and Executive Coaching; and Leadership Development, and researches in the area of leadership capacity and development in health systems.

He is a Certified Analytic-Network© Coach and an accredited provider of Barry Oshry's Power+Systems© 'Organization Workshop' and 'Where Cultures Meet' leadership development programmes.

Programme AimsThe UCD School of Nursing, Midwifery and Health Systems offers three new professional development programmes designed to develop your strategic leadership and innovative capabilities by helping you to acquire and apply knowledge and understanding to enhance improvement and innovation capacity in your organisation. The programmes are open to applicants from a range of professional backgrounds, clinical and managerial, who hold an appropriate honours bachelor’s degree, or equivalent.

What will I learn?You will apply systems and design thinking principles to contemporary healthcare challenges and critically evaluate their contribution. You will study conceptual frameworks, theories, models, case studies and research findings and consider how these can be applied to strengthen your own and your organisation’s strategic thinking and innovative capacities.

Three programmes are offered:

• Professional Diploma in Strategic Leadership forHealthcare Improvement and Innovation

• Professional Certificate in Strategic Leadership inHealthcare

• Professional Certificate in Healthcare Innovation

The Professional Diploma in Strategic Leadership for Healthcare Improvement and Innovation (20 ECTS credits) comprises two modules, Strategic Leadership for Healthcare Improvement and Innovation, and Innovation in Healthcare: Local and Global.

You will gain insight into developing and executing organisational strategy to build a sustainable culture for creativity and innovation. Major code: X835

The Professional Certificate in Strategic Leadership in Healthcare (10 ECTS credits) comprises one module, Strategic Leadership for Healthcare Improvement and Innovation, and focuses on building organisational strategy and sustainable competitive advantage through a shared understanding of purpose. Major code: X834

The Professional Certificate in Healthcare Innovation (10 ECTS credits) comprises the module, Innovation in Healthcare: Local and Global, and critically examines the key components of innovative organisations, and strategies for innovating more effectively. Major code: X833

Professional Programmes in Strategy and Innovation in Health Systems

UCD Level 9, 10 to 20 ECTS credits. Part time, flexible

Complete the application form with your personal details, pay the €50 application fee and upload your documents. Click ‘Submit’ when you have finished.

STEP 6

UCD Admissions will confirm receipt of your application. Once a decision on your application has been made, you will be notified by email. Upon receipt of this email, log back into your account to review the decision.
