Principal’s ForewordGoing single-session has been much anti cipated, and we are glad that in January this year, we made a smooth transiti on to single-session. This is att ributed to the concerted eff ort of our staff members, pupils, parents and service providers.

The safety of our pupils conti nues to be our priority as we anti cipated heavier traffi c fl ow into and out of the school premises during reporti ng and dismissal ti mes as well as the increase in the number of recesses to accommodate all the pupils.

As we transit to single-session, the eff orts to create a conducive environment for learning is sustained. During the past few months, the school went through the General Redecorati ons and Repairs (GR&R) to give a fresh coat of paint to the school building. As you walk through the Walk Zone on the ground level, you will also noti ce the newly-created mural on the walls depicti ng our school values and messages on cyber wellness. Several tablets are mounted on the walls for our pupils to engage in e-learning during the recesses or aft er school while waiti ng for their CCA or remedial lessons to commence.

We conti nue to promote healthy living to our pupils and staff , and are progressively introducing the MOE Healthy Meals in Schools Programme. For a start, we have introduced 20% of brown rice in all the rice dishes served in our school canteen. In fact, wholemeal bread has already been used for the making of sandwiches sold in the canteen. Besides healthy eati ng, the school’s Play Together Programme provides the pupils with the access to the school’s PE equipment for them to play various games with their peers during the recesses.

With the transiti on to single-session, we are also glad to announce the opening of the school-based student care centre from 27 June this year. The company that is operati ng the student care centre is the Self Help Groups Student Care Limited (SHGSCL). It serves to provide a safe and conducive aft er-school care for our pupils as well as educati onal and developmental support for them.

We would like to thank our parents for your support in our move to single-session, and your partnership in our pupils’ learning journey.

As part of the school’s conti nuing eff orts to provide a platf orm for pupils to pursue music excellence, our pupils took part in the biennial Singapore Youth Festi val (SYF) Arts Presentati on 2016 held at the Singapore Conference Hall. In preparati on for the SYF, our pupils had put in a lot of ti me and eff ort to prepare themselves for this event. They also att ended a Band Exchange programme with the other schools where they gained valuable experience and learnt the values of perseverance and teamwork. At the same ti me, it was also an opportunity for our pupils to learn from the other band groups and conti nually improve themselves. On the day of the event, many parents and ex-pupils turned up to give their support. Our pupils played with such passion and zest, putti ng up a wonderful performance. They were awarded the Certi fi cate of Accomplishment!

Congratulati ons to our Fuchun Choir as they have clinched the Certi fi cate of Disti ncti on at the SYF Arts Presentati on 2016. The group performed three songs, “Voices in the Round” by Jeremiah Li, “Lascia Ch’io Pianga” by Georg Friederic Handel and “Ko No U Ta Wo” by Ko Maniko Yoshiko, a Japanese song. The last song encourages everybody to use music as the strength to see light in everything they do and look forward to a bright future. Fuchun Choir is aspiring towards this goal.

5Fuchun Values: Respect - values oneself; recognises the value in others

I Learn As I Play, is the principle behind the set-up of tablets along the Walk Zone where pupils can access the tablets and play digital games.

Through digital games, pupils are engaged and moti vated. They are given the choice to make decisions and are able to make mistakes in a risk-free setti ng. Through experimentati on, they learn acti vely and practi se the right way of doing things. Scores and the reward mechanisms in competi ti on could be viewed as positi ve and serve as moti vati ng factors to help them achieve their goals in the learning of subject areas such as Mathemati cs and English.

Seizing the opportunity, our school set up the free access area for the pupils. Digital games are used to supplement classroom-based learning. Currently, 6 tablets have been mounted on the wall along the Walk Zone outside the library. Pupils are able to use these devices during their recesses and aft er school. Applicati ons are added and updated so that pupils have a variety of digital games to play in diff erent subject areas. It has been observed that pupils have demonstrated good self-discipline and responsibility when using the devices. They learn to share not only the devices, but also the knowledge and skills that they apply and learn through these engaging games.

As part of our eff orts to prepare our Primary 6 pupils for their upcoming PSLE, the school invited a former pupil, Miss Chok Xin Lin to conduct a moti vati onal talk for the pupils. Miss Chok, who graduated from Fuchun Primary School in 2006, is currently doing her fi nal year at the Singapore University of Technology and Design.

During the talk, Miss Chok shared her experiences in Fuchun and how she overcame the challenges she had faced as a student with our pupils. She also spoke about examinati on strategies, ti me management skills and study ti ps. She gave some stress management ti ps which the pupils can apply as they prepare themselves for their PSLE.

The pupils gave positi ve feedback of the talk and shared that they had benefi tt ed from the session.

Our School has implemented the school-based Programme for Acti ve Learning (PAL) this year as we embark on the single-session. The PAL programme aims to bring about more emphasis to the non-academic domains: Sports and Games, Outdoor Educati on, Performing Arts and Visual Arts. Pupils also develop social-emoti onal competencies such as self-awareness and relati onship-management during the lessons in which they experience working as a group and individually.

In collaborati on with the CCE Department, the Math Department introduced equivalent fracti ons in the preparati on of egg mayo sandwiches during the programme. This integrati on provides Primary 3 pupils with opportuniti es to experience authenti c learning beyond the classroom. The pupils learn Mathemati cal concepts through hands-on acti viti es. Pupils are exposed to real-life situati ons where they can apply their learning. Their teachers are also present to facilitate the discussions.

Pupils learnt how to fold clothes and pack them in a ziplock bag. These life skills not only help them to be independent but also enable them to help out at home!

Since 2011, our school has been working with the Singapore American School (SAS). This year, we created simple alphabet word books. Upon completi on, these books will be given to Fei Yue Family Services Centre to benefi t young residents in improving their reading skills. Our Primary 1 pupils, together with pupils from Primary 2C, 2D and 2E, were involved in these collaborati ve sessions with their peers from SAS over the month of April. The visits took place in both schools to allow pupils to exchange and understand the diversity in cultures among them. Through this collaborati on, they learnt how to respect the diff erent cultures and create their own masterpiece!

Fuchun Caring Week is observed yearly on the second week of April. This initi ati ve reminds our pupils of the need to show care for others in the community especially the needy. It also serves as a good platf orm for pupils to demonstrate the value of care, which is one of the 5 Fuchun school values. The school collected from both staff members and pupils food and other essenti al items to be donated to 4 homes for the needy; namely Mett a Home, Sree Narayana Mission, Mun Fatt Tong Nursing Home and Pertapis Home.

During this donati on drive, Fuchunians brought along food and other essenti al items to school. Our Primary 5 pupils collected, sorted and distributed the items to the homes as part of the Values-In-Acti on (VIA) Programme. It was indeed heartening to receive donati ons from pupils. Parents also did their part and came down personally to the school to donate food and other essenti al items. A very big thank you to all parents, staff members and pupils who had helped to make this initi ati ve a success!

On 29 February 2016, our Primary 1 pupils embarked on a Learning Journey to watch a musical - Elephant and Piggie’s - “We are in a Play!”

This programme is part of the school’s eff ort to integrate the learning of English and Aestheti cs into the learning experience for the pupils. It was the fi rst ti me that Primary 1 pupils had att ended a musical performance with their classmates. The pupils were indeed thrilled about the performance!

Through this joyful occasion, the pupils gained a bett er understanding of proper concert eti quett e in a real theatre setti ng. With an interesti ng array of music and strong visuals incorporated into the theatrical performance, the pupils had the chance to watch how the characters used facial expressions, body language, voice and tonal infl ecti ons to demonstrate their emoti ons. The pupils also learnt how music in a play can aff ect the mood of the musical. They had certainly gained a greater appreciati on for musical performances given the opportunity to view a live musical! It was defi nitely a delightf ul and enriching musical experience for our pupils!

This year as a follow-up to Total Defence Day, the English and NE & SS Departments collaborated to organise a learning journey to Refl ecti ons at Bukit Chandu for all Primary 6 pupils on 8 and 9 March 2016. The learning journey was planned to provide pupils with an opportunity to learn more about the Japanese invasion and the Malay Regiment as well as to refl ect on Singapore’s heritage of heroism and history. This learning journey enabled pupils to interact with their peers as they worked in small groups to answer questi ons using the tablets and off ered them the exposure of visiti ng a war-ti me museum in Singapore.

“So, how can you make the marble move downwards slowly?” This and many other energy-related questi ons were raised during a laboratory session at the Science Centre Singapore. The Primary 6 pupils had an enjoyable learning experience when they att ended this lesson in Term 2 . The pupils had the opportunity to carry out various experiments related to the topic of “Energy Conversions” and worked in teams to fi nd out more about how energy can be converted to other forms. When asked about the workshop, many pupils said that they were able to apply what they had learnt in school.

Meanwhile, the Primary 5 pupils also att ended a workshop at the Science Centre Singapore in Term 1. They had the opportunity to prepare specimens to view under a microscope and make models of double helices. Donned in lab coats, the pupils “transformed” into Litt le Scienti sts and carried out their experiments just like any scienti st in the laboratory.

Whether they were investi gati ng cells, learning more about heredity or getti ng to know more about heat and temperature, the pupils defi nitely had fun exploring the Science concepts.

On 1 April 2016, 6 of our Primary 6 pupils were engaged in a meaningful and enriching competi ti on, during the “Fun With Math and Science Day”, held at St Andrew’s Secondary School. In this competi ti on, the pupils’ Mathemati cs and Science skills were put to the test through brain-teasing questi ons and acti viti es. The pupils also parti cipated in an amazing race featuring a series of games.

Game of “Science Charades” was fun and kept the pupils engaged.
