The EPA has regulated heavy-duty diesel engines since the1970s. The following chartshows the trend to ever-loweremissions. Understanding thedetails of the chart is not ofinterest to most truckers.

Even though the emissionsstandards become increasinglymore difficult to meet, thediesel engine industry hasalways been able to continue toimprove engine durability,reliability, performance, andfuel economy. A quick look atthe bottom right hand side ofthe chart also shows thatemissions from diesel enginesbuilt in 2007 and beyond willapproach zero.

The Series 60 EGR

The NOx Challenge2002 emission regulations requireda reduction in oxides of nitrogen(NOx) to 2.5 g/hp-hr. NOx is a by-product of high temperatures in thecombustion chamber, the higherthe temperature, the higher the pro-duction of NOx.

How Does EGR Work?EGR (Exhaust Gas Recirculation) isa simple concept. During certainconditions of engine operation, theEGR valve is opened and measuredamounts of exhaust gas are routedto the intake manifold. The exhaustgas mixes with the incoming freshair and displaces some of the oxy-gen. Since there is now slightly lessoxygen in the air, the peak temper-atures created in the combustionchamber are reduced, and the lev-els of NOx are also reduced.

EGR Is TheBest SolutionEGR is the technology chosen byall but one major engine maker inNorth America. EGR has been inuse on automobile engines sincethe mid-1970s.

The challenge faced by DetroitDiesel and the other engine makerswas to reduce NOx withoutadversely affecting fuel economy,performance, durability, or otherfactors of engine operation. EGRhas proven to be the best way toreduce NOx while maintainingexcellent driveability, performance,fuel economy, and engine life.

With more than 27 different powerratings to choose from, it’s easy tomatch a Series 60 engine to theexact needs of any trucker. Butsometimes their needs change.

That’s not a problem with the Series 60engine! The power chart on the leftshows the groups of engine ratingswithin each family.

The families contained in each ofthe shaded sections have identicalhardware. The groups displayed ineach family show the prepro-grammed horsepower range in asingle engine. A simple electronictool is all that is required to changepower within a group. Powerchanges from one group to anotherwithin the same family simply requirereprogramming of the engine’s elec-tronic control module.

It is possible to change powerfrom one group to another (justmake sure the truck cooling, airintake and exhaust systems and thedriveline can handle the change).Upping the horsepower to the maxi-mum limit at time of trade-in is aneasy way to increase both the resalevalue and desirability of any truck.

for easy entry and exit of air from thecylinder. The engine doesn’t waste fuel“pumping” air in and out.

� Intake and exhaust passages are alsoshort. Intake air is not overly heated as itpasses through the head. The resultingcooler air in the cylinder improveseconomy. And the hot exhaust gasesdon’t transfer too much heat into the headas they exit, saving more energy tooperate the turbo and increasefuel economy.

� The overhead cam allows for direct actu-ation of the fuel injectors without pushrods or push tubes. The result is high fuelinjection pressure and better fuel economy.

� The overhead cam also allows for the useof 38 head bolts, providing over1,000,000 pounds of clamp load on thehead gasket.

The cylinder liner is cooled allthe way to the top, using apatented DDC feature called topliner cooling. This reduces ringtemperatures by 100ºF, anotherreason Series 60 engines live so long.

Main and rod bearings arebig. That’s why the Series 60engine has no requirement toroll out bearings—it’s just notnecessary.

We called the 800 line, I wasdown for Christmas anyways they said we could get someone out right away well wesaid it was Christmas, we could wait. They said no, they have a guy and that was his jobthe guy called us back, he came out and did it right in our driveway, you know, did theinjector right then and there. He was happy more than happy to fix us up that kind ofsums the whole thing up.
