Fuel Systems and Starters
Warm up...
How many different fuel induction systems exist?
What does a starter do?? (ANY ANSWER BUT STARTS THE CAR!)
Carburetor
A Carburetor is a method of fuel induction that is 100% Mechanical in nature.
It does NOT require a computer system Found on most small engines Last production car sold with a carburetor was a
Subaru in 1992

Electronic Fuel Injection
• Popular in many Cars, boats, trucks, quads, ect…
• Electronic and computer controlled fuel induction
• Requires an Electronic Control Module (ECM) and a variety of sensors
• 2 types of EFI
• Throttle body injection (TBI)• Multi-port injection (MPI)
Throttle Body Injection
• Uses a single point of injection, typically located at the top of the throttle body.
• May have more than one injector
Multi-point Injection
• Has an injector for each cylinder
• More fuel efficient
• Harder to repair

Direct Injection
• Latest form of fuel induction
• Requires an ECM and variety of sensors to run
• Directly injects gas into the cylinder.
• Only air enters in through the intake valve.

Car Starters
• A car starter utilizes magnets, springs, armatures, and gears.
• Upon turning your key the starter receives electricity which pops out and engages a gear into the flywheel of the motor.
• This spins the motor until it is running.
Starters
Why is it potentially harmful to attempt to start the car while it is already running?

Assignment
• Completely disassembly an intake plenum with EFI MPI injection and reassemble
• Disassemble a car starter and reassemble
