The second largest of the Canary Islands attracts huge numbers ofsun-worshippers and water sport practitioners in search of one thing: the mostpristine beaches in the archipelago. You can't blame them. The golden sand, coolwater and gentle sea breeze of Fuerteventura are head and shoulders abovethose of its neighbours. But the island has so much more to offer, from barrendessert scenery and fascinating volcanoes to colourful and characterful townsand pleasant harbour promenades, all of which visitors would be foolish to missout on.

THE ISLAND
gevision/Shutterstock.com
Shaped like a leg dressed in plus-fours, the
island's 340-km gilt-edged coast surrounds a
relatively at interior of gentle hills and
sweeping plains. The unique dessert landscape
and long-dead volcanoes are a sight to behold,
and earned the whole island the title of UNESCO
Biosphere Reserve in 2009.
Goat herders and shermen once ruled the
island, living a simple life of relative solitude.
Nowadays, tourism is the driving force, centred
around the lively resorts of Corralejo in the
north, Jandía in the south, and more recently,
Caleta de Fuste on the east coast.
DO & SEE
Pawel Kazmierczak/Shutterstock.com
Most of tourists who visit Fuerteventura do so
for the blue skies and pleasant temperatures,
seeking rolling waves and a rocking nightlife.
However, away from the visitor hubs, the
tranquillity of old is easy to nd, even on the
beaches - with such a profusion of broad sandy
strips, towel space is never going to be a
problem. Away from the shoreline, desolate
roads lined with squat, round windmills link tiny
villages of sugar cube cottages. Here, the
population ekes out an existence producing
world renowned cheese and ruby red tomatoes.
Isla de Lobos
Located 2 km from the
near island of
Fuerteventura, this island
has been a nature reserve
for several years since
the ´80s. Isla de Lobos
means Wolves Island and it was named like this
due to the numerous sea wolves that used to live
on it, so that they were considered the original
conquerors of the island. Nowadays, Isla de
Lobos is a very popular tourist attraction,
especially for nature lovers.

SS American Star Shipwreck
There is something
unnerving yet fascinating
about standing close to
the wreck of a beached
ocean liner. Although
much of the SS American
Star has been claimed by the sea since its
demise in 1994, the bow still soars deantly from
the shallow waters.

palettes with goat, rabbit, goo (roasted corn

ubiquitous accompaniments of ery red mojo
sauce and 'wrinkled potatoes' (papas arrugadas).
