  • FUGEN Constructions punching above their weight – again Written by: Allie SchratzProduced by: Dan Moody >>>

When it comes to staying ahead of the competition and keeping up within

a fast evolving industry, FUGEN Constructions has built the internal structures and attained the industry ‘know how’ to remain a key player.

Established in 1994 in Botany, Australia, FUGEN has set the standard for the industry around Sydney and regional New South Wales by cultivating many long-term client relationships across the health and medical, laboratory, retail, aged care, education, hospitality, commercial and infrastructure sectors.

The mid-size, multi-award winning construction company first made a name for itself in 1996 when it won a significant project contract with the University of Sydney. Two years later, the FUGEN portfolio spanned 100 completed projects, and by 1999, the company had won its first project valued at more than $5 million. That same year, the company received its first two gold Master Builders Australia (MBA) Excellence in Construction

Awards and over the next 13 years, the prestigious association has recognised many more of FUGEN’s projects.

Six years into FUGEN’s establishment, its annual turnover totalled $20 million. As the company continued to expand its sector specialisation and industry ‘know how,’ that figure also continued to grow. Today, FUGEN’s annual turnover is over $50 million, and its financial stability is a source of pride for this quality-driven company.

FUGEN ‘Know How’FUGEN has built its rock solid reputation on a combination of experience and expertise. It’s a concept known within the business as FUGEN ‘know how.’ The breadth of this ‘know how’ has expanded as the company’s sector-specific expertise and collaborative client relationships continue to grow

Clients are attracted by FUGEN’s ‘know-how’ in handling challenging assignments. Whether the challenge be difficult site access, heritage issues, design

intricacies, lack of available utility services, building in a fully operational environment, or recycling used materials, the FUGEN team respond with experience based solutions, time and time again.

FUGEN also offers its clients creative design solutions, extensive problem solving expertise, unparalleled value in their project work, and client-aligned risk management. Regular and pro-active communication between project managers and clients ensures that everyone is on the same page from project conception to completion. This enables FUGEN to develop and maintain trusting relationships among its partners, contractors and clients, delivering a competitively priced, high-quality standard of work that meets – and often exceeds – clients’ expectations. It’s the reason why FUGEN receive so much repeat business from clients.

Key PeopleManaging Director Stephen Flannery, joined the company in 1998 and is responsible for implementing FUGEN’s ‘know how’ guiding philosophy. Building upon two and a half decades’ worth of industry expertise, Mr

Flannery has equipped FUGEN with the resources and knowledge necessary to win projects in key industry sectors and ensure that FUGEN’s employees are well versed in latest industry developments, new technology, and fundamental business practices.

Dan Murphy, a founding Director of FUGEN, also brings with him upward of 25 years’ worth of diverse industry experience to the company. As the immediate past-President of the MBA, Mr Murphy’s superior communication and organisational skills have helped FUGEN retain key clients and forge strong relationships with a strong industry network.

Tim Murphy, also a founding Director of FUGEN, helps the company progress down a more strategic path to success. His 25-plus years in the construction industry have provided him with the connections and experience necessary to navigate FUGEN past its competitors so the company may continue to uphold its stellar industry reputation.

Master Builders Association (MBA) Award Wins2012 marks the seventh consecutive year that FUGEN has been honoured by the MBA, with

the company winning a record-breaking four awards. “For a company of our size to win four such awards, across a multitude of construction sectors, is an enormous effort,” Mr Flannery said upon receiving the awards.

The company’s 2012 winning projects include:• New Brighton Hotel, which won the ‘Club/Entertainment Refurbishment’ category in the ‘$5-20 Million’ value range. This extensive renovation and refurbishment project restored the architectural glory of the historic, ‘grand old lady’ landmark building on The Corso, Manly. • Stonecutters Ridge Clubhouse,

winner of the ‘Club/Entertainment – New Building’ sector (in any price category). Completed in October, this building was constructed in challenging circumstances. “When these works commenced there were no services to the site. Temporary power had to be brought in from half a kilometre away, and water trucked into the site. The design and construction of these complex and well finished buildings was completed in 42 weeks,” remarked an MBA judge, according to the clubhouse media release.• Bathurst Health Service, winner of the ‘Health Buildings’ category in the ‘Up to $10 Million’ value

This project revitalised the dormant Heritage building for use as a state-of-the-art health and education facility, and its completion made this project a ‘prestigious’ contender for an MBA award. The Main Building also featured refurbishment to the gymnasium, ambulatory care and kiosk – all completed while the hospital remained in operation, meaning strict health and safety code compliance was imperative throughout the project. “Despite the length of time FUGEN were on site and the breadth of their work, we had not one complaint,” said Bathurst Health Services General Manager David Wright of the company’s work within the building. “They certainly had an

This project involved the demolition of an existing office building, as well as the construction of a basement with oil tanks, flame traps and cable pits, in addition to a ground-level GIS room and two transformer bays, all the while remaining mindful of the architectural aesthetics.

“Credit and recognition [for these awards] must also go to our clients, and the hard working and dedicated teams of people who have delivered

these exceptional projects,” Mr Flannery said.

People ManagementFUGEN’s reputation is contingent upon the skills and competencies of its employees, and the company goes to great lengths to ensure they find the best people to join their team as construction and project managers, estimators and administrators.

  • Company name: FUGEN Constructions

The company was founded in 1994. Two years later we won our first significant project with the University of Sydney, a client we continue to serve to this day.

By 1998 we had completed our 100th project. By 1999 we had won our first project worth more than $5 million. The same year we won two gold MBA awards, and we’ve been regular winners ever since.

By 2000 our turnover hit the $20 million mark and steadily rose over the following decade, with annual turnover now over $50 Million.

Today, we specialise in several key sectors and this strategy is not only helping us grow but it ensures our expertise will continue to develop.

Flannery added. In an effort to cultivate young

industry talent, FUGEN offers apprenticeships and an internal university cadet program that provides a practical, hands-on education to those looking to grow their construction careers.

The Future With its financial stability, strong executive leadership and extensive ‘know how’ expertise, FUGEN is a prime example of a company with a successful future ahead. If 2012 is anything to judge by, the company is destined to further expand its client base, complete more exciting projects, and continue to ‘punch above their weight’ – again and again.
