Fujitsu’s semiconductor business started in 1966, more than 50 years ago,

when what is said to be Japan’s first clean room for making prototype ICs

was built at the Fujitsu Kawasaki factory. The DNA of Fujitsu’s semiconductor

business, which was acquired subsequently as the business grew larger, has

been passed onto the present-day Fujitsu Semiconductor Group, including

the high functionality, high quality, and high reliability of its products. In an

era of technologies such as PCs, smartphones, and even IoT, our commitment

to striving toward high quality manufacturing and creating value that

matches customer needs does not change.

Our spirit of taking on the challenge of high quality manufacturing has taken

root in Mie Fujitsu Semiconductor and Aizu Fujitsu Semiconductor, which

are developing water foundry business. In 2013, Mie’s 12-inch factory established the world’s first technology for

manufacturing Deeply Depleted Channel (DDC) transistors that provide ultra-low power consumption best suited for

IoT devices and succeeded in mass-producing these transistors. Aizu’s 8-inch factory leverages existing technologies

to provide a wide range of LSI products, including flash microcontrollers used in automobiles and digital equipment,

thereby contributing to our customers’ businesses. In FY2014, Aizu’s 6-inch factory launched the world’s first

mass-production of gallium nitride (GaN) power devices, which are expected to play a crucial role in saving energy,

in order to provide customers with environmentally friendly products.

Fujitsu also offers Ferroelectric Random Access Memories (FRAMs) to customers demanding high performance.

FRAMs provide non-volatility, which retains stored data even when the power is turned off, as well as random access.

Compared with conventional types of non-volatile memories, such as EEPROMs and flash memories, FRAMs have

unique features, including higher write speeds, greater read/write cycle endurance and lower power consumption.

FRAMs are employed for a wide range of uses, such as IC cards, RFID tags, electric meters, and industrial machinery.

They are also best suited for wearable devices and sensor networks, whose markets continue to grow.

In terms of sales, through our global network of Fujitsu Electronics and our overseas sales subsidiaries, we provide

solutions tailored to individual cases in order to create value that meets the needs of customers not only in Japan,

but also in the Americas, Europe, and Asia.

Reliability and Experiences: High Quality, Highly Reliable Memory

Matured memory manufacturerFujitsu Limited has offered a continuous stream of memory products for more than 47 years since 1969. Today Fujitsu Semiconductor Limited offers products based on Ferroelectric Random Access Memory (FRAM), a type of high quality, high reliability non-volatile memory.

Development of FRAM began in 1995, and Fujitsu has a track record of more than 18 years of mass production. Fujitsu has previously received inquiries from customers in 45 countries all over the world regarding a diverse range of more than 200 types of applications.

FRAM has been employed for smart cards and RFID tags (Radio Frequency IDentification tags, i.e., electronic tags) in the customer applications, and also for power meters, automation machinery, medical RFID tags in the industrial applications.

Outstanding featuresFRAM has the characteristics of both non-volatility and random access like SRAM. Its features include: no need for battery backup to retain data, as well as high-speed writing, a high number of read/write cycles, and low power consumption compared to existing non-volatile memory. Due to these advantages, FRAM is used in applications requiring continuous rewriting of data, real-time recording of three-dimensional information, and robust protection of data.

Proof of High TechnologySince 1999, Fujitsu has providing FRAM devices in production. Continuous mass production and stable supply of FRAM are evidence of Fujitsu Semiconductor’s advanced technological skills.

Initially FRAM using ferroelectric technology could not be mass produced because ferroelectric deteriorated through conventional semiconductor processes. Fujitsu identified the cause of the deterioration and adopted a countermeasure to the manufacturing process, which led to us being the first company to successfully mass produce FRAM.

The development of mass production technology for FRAM products and their contributions to society were honored in prizes recent years.

Fujitsu continues stable supply of high quality FRAM backed by our technological strength.

Creation and Challenge: Developing New Memory

Challenge of developing new memoryOur company has released a series of new memory over the past year.For example, Fujitsu Semiconductor developed an FRAM that can operate at a temperature of 125 C̊, 40 C̊ higher than the upper limit of conventional products’ operating temperature range. In addition, we also announced the development of NRAM® and ReRAM, new memory devices whose structure differs from FRAMs.

We will continue our efforts to reduce memory power consumption, expand operating temperature range, and increase memory density, while also developing products that are suited for customer needs.

FRAM Guaranteed to Operate up to 125 C̊The applications of automotive and industrial robots require electronic devices guaranteed to operate in high temperature environment. In order to meet the requirement from customers, we have launched two FRAM products.

These new products feature, not only a maximum operating temperature of 125 C̊ , but also improved reliability achieved by reviewing the existing internal circuit design in order to meet high quality requirements from the automotive applications.

Next-generation memory, NRAM® and ReRAMThe NRAM® is a non-volatile memory created by using cutting-edge carbon nanotube technology and materials. In addition to consuming a low power and having high read/write cycle endurance, it also has higher density. Currently, we are working jointly with U.S.-based Nantero, Inc. and Mie Fujitsu Semiconductor Ltd. to develop new products.

The Resistive Random Access Memory (ReRAM) has a structure that memorizes data by changes in resistance. Using an extremely low read current, it is best suited for compact, battery-operated wearable devices.

Batteryless solutionsFujitsu also makes it a mission to propose memory-based solutions, including batteryless solutions. In the Internet-of-Things (IoT) environment that surrounds us today, wireless RFID tags play more important roles than ever. We have successfully developed a batteryless LSI for RFID tags by using an FRAM.

Fujitsu will continue providing a wide variety of solutions by using new memory products in order to meet customer needs that minimizing power consumption, or developing batteryless solution for IoT-related devices, including wearable devices.
