do steering well, when many car makers get it wrong. Now with more of the right amount of turns lock-to-lock, self-centring and feedback while positioned straight. This inspires you to trust the front when turning in. On any road surface from the ultra smooth to the bumpier country road the GTS chassis has a setting for you and performs confidently even in standard mode which will handle the unexpected with a comfortable ease if you release it from sport mode.

This GTS is really a whole lot of car, hugely impressive on these roads, really fast and user friendly. A perfect platform to further your driving skills with spirited road driving and the odd track day should you wish to do so.

We arrive at Bell and then Lithgow beyond it, where you have the chance to refuel both car and driver, before a quick transit stage on the Great Western highway for the first time heading south for about 1500 metres.

We turn off onto Magpie Hollow Rd in the South Bowenfels area, if you thought Bells Line was good then this is where the country roads really start to turn on the charm. The torque curve doesn’t feel flat, it seems to grow as the revs rise, giving a sense of naturally aspirated flow, just with a whole lot more torque!

You get into a rhythm moving downhill until Lake Lyell appears on your right tucked into the valley, moving down onto the bridge spanning the dam at the southern end, you slow and try to peak over the edge into the abyss below, but the signs urge you to keep driving. Further ahead the characteristics of the road are full of open sight lines, gum trees, guard rails and panoramic vistas.

The Porsche feels nailed to the road and leaves us feeling very much in control; it is really built for enthusiast driving. The Carrera GTS is the last and best of breed model, the kinks have been ironed out and the development has been poured in, you can definitely feel it.

Previous generations aside, if you just look at the lifespan of the 991 version Porsche 911 - the development and tweaking from launch until now has been vast, there is a natural athletic

Mayfield Gardens, near Oberon NSW is the destination; one of the world’s largest privately owned ‘cool climate’ gardens. Actually, to call it a garden is an understatement, it is more in the region of a park. The route is to head to Lithgow, then take Magpie Hollow Rd and Sodwalls Rd pointed at the former railway junction town of Tarana then Mutton Falls Rd, O’Connell Rd and finally the sprint up Mayfield Rd to your destination Mayfield Gardens. The Gardens span across more than 160 acres (64 hectares) and sits within a 5,000 acre working farm. With no booking necessary - you scribble ‘911 GTS’ over tomorrow’s date on the wall calendar and retire for a sleepless night.

Leaving at dawn your visions of Porsche design lead have vanished, but filling the void is a key to a silver Porsche 991.2 911 Carrera GTS coupe, sometimes the truth is better than fiction. On approaching the car, the iconic 911 shape looks enhanced on the GTS, it’s mean, aggressive and athletic. The stance sits just right on centre lock wheels measuring nine inches on the front axle and twelve on the rear, wrapped in Pirelli P-ZERO tyres tucked under the wider body panels usually reserved for the all-wheel drive 911.

Turning the key, the 911 sound of occasion is there! What follows are dark and blurry kilometres moving past the glass as you exit the metropolis and head for the mountains, you get as far as Richmond, which is now considered to be an outer suburb of the Sydney, when a sign shouting “Coffee Here” halts your progress. This is the very beginning of the Bells Line of Road, which leads into, over and across the Blue Mountains, finishing in Lithgow, it is the first leg of your test drive.

Back out on the course chip tarmac this car feels amazing, the level of grip is something else, you can feel the tyres flex and the suspension adjust as the car pushes through the fast corners, first with immense front grip then as weight transfers to the rear under throttle, you exit with the weight over the huge back wheels. At overtaking points a ‘double kick’ of the throttle gives you optimal output for the short period of time it takes for the inevitable position change.

The steering is a revelation and just keeps getting better from the electric introduction in the first 991 generation, Porsche

Increased suitability for everyday use. The new Cayenne offers even more space for five people and their luggage. The rear bench seat can be moved as required to increase the luggage compartment volume by up to 100 litres.Adaptive aerodynamics. The Cayenne Turbo is the first SUV in the world to feature an adaptive roof spoiler and air brake for increased performance and a shorter braking distance. The cockpit of the future. Fully networked. New functions, new services, new apps: with Porsche Connect Plus, Porsche is raising vehicle networking to a new level. This system belongs to the standard equipment of the new Cayenne and includes, among other things, an LTE telephone module with integrated SIM card, online navigation including real-time traffic information and intelligent online voice control. Powerful turbo engines. The Cayenne comes with a choice of new V6 and V8 petrol engines boasting 250 kW (340 hp), 324 kW (440 hp) or 404 kW (550 hp) combined with a new eight-speed Tiptronic S.

Innovative chassis systems. Mixed tyres and rear-axle steering as on the 911, as well as three-chamber air suspension and electric rolling-motion compensation increase sportiness and comfort.Improved deceleration. The newly developed Porsche Surface Coated Brake (PSCB) with tungsten carbide coating delivers improved responsiveness and a considerably longer service life.Extensive assistance systems. New assistance systems such as the innovative Porsche InnoDrive, the adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go function, Lane Keeping Assist, Lane Change Assist and Night Vision Assist all increase comfort and safety.Intelligent lightweight construction. The innovative lightweight body construction created using an intelligent mix of aluminium and steel delivers weight savings of up to 65 kg – despite a significantly extended range of standard equipment.

With this new generation, the Cayenne is writing a new chapter in the relationship between the driver and vehicle. The Porsche Advanced Cockpit integrates display and control elements in a single, harmonious design. The centre console with Direct Touch Control and the new 12.3-inch touch display of the Porsche Communication Management (PCM) system act as the driver’s interface to all vehicle functions.

Porsche has developed a chassis with a versatility that is unrivalled in the SUV segment. The chassis – designed completely from scratch – pushes the boundaries of sportiness and comfort to new levels. On the one hand, the car offers the driver a level of driving dynamics rivalled only by sports cars. On the other, the driver can also enjoy the driving comfort typically associated only with top-segment saloons. New active systems such as rear-axle steering, Porsche Dynamic Chassis Control (PDCC) electromechanical rolling-motion compensation and three-chamber air suspension are key to this heightened versatility. All of these systems are managed by the new 4D Chassis Control. Sporty drivers will also appreciate the new mixed tyres and the Porsche Surface Coated Brake (PSCB), which makes its global début in this car.

The new Cayenne has lost nothing of its compact appearance, although it has grown at least 6 cm in length while retaining the same wheelbase. Quite the opposite, in fact: The new proportions make it appear even more dynamic. The side windows are narrower than on the previous model, with a sharper decline towards the rear, in keeping with the low roof line at the rear. Both elements make the vehicle appear lower to the ground and more streamlined.

New is the thermally and noise insulated laminated glass. This reflects infra-red radiation, thus reducing heat-up of the interior in strong sunshine.

A sports car for five

“The important thing is that improvements are not only seen on paper, but are unequivocally quantifiable and able to be experienced by everyone.”

Q & A Director of the Porsche GT Model Line; Andreas Preuninger

talks us through the latest GT3 RS.

T H E T R A C K

For you, where was the greatest challenge in the development of the new 911 GT3 RS?

The predecessor was the most successful RS vehicle to date, and not without reason. Making a car like this even better initially seemed to be an almost unsolvable task. So we did what we always do: we worked meticulously on every detail, set ourselves high goals and, by doing so, edged closer to the impossible. In the process, everything gets put on the test stand, analysed with absolute precision and squeezed for every last drop of improvement potential: engine, transmission, chassis, aerodynamics, lightweight concepts. Even the feedback from our GT customers has been directly incorporated so that we could, in essence, tailor-make the car the way our customers wanted it. We are also implementing not only the lessons learned from motor racing, but also innovative ideas from the pinnacle of motorsport. The whole Weissach ‘think tank’ is actively involved in this.

More performance, more Porsche: how do you manage to up your game with every new 911 GT model?

Above all, it's the people who make this possible. I'm talking not only about developers, but also our colleagues in production who, time and time again, find the solutions enabling cars like the GT3 RS to emerge from the assembly line in series production. That is a challenge for us all. But we have no intention of being ousted from ‘pole position’ here. With the 911 Carrera as the basis, itself becoming increasingly higher-performing, with continuous developments in engineering and technologies and with our accumulated motorsport experience, we have developed a formula for success that forever manages to find room for improvement.

How much of today's Porsche Motorsport has gone into the new 911 GT3 RS?

A great deal. The GT3 RS is not only born where our race cars are developed – namely, the Porsche Motorsport division in Flacht – a large number of the development team is, in fact, also responsible for both breeds of vehicle. That's the reason for the high quantity of carry-over parts, e.g. from the GT3 RS and GT3

Cup or GT3 R. The test procedures of the road-legal GT vehicles are based heavily on those of their race car counterparts: the drivetrain, for example, is required to undertake endurance runs simulating race track use alone, which means subjecting it to loads that simply cannot occur in road use. That's also why the collaboration of our works drivers is so important.

Where is the greatest challenge: in the chassis or engine – or both?

Everything is important. Even in the new 911 GT3 RS, the engine is now allowed to rev at 9,000 rpm. PDK shifts even faster, the chassis has an even more uncompromising setup and is very similar to that of the GT2 RS. Aerodynamics and control systems have been improved, even the tyres have undergone further development. The greatest challenge, ultimately, is to combine a zillion parts in such a way that they harmonise perfectly with each other and feel as one.

Which detail or aspect fascinates you about the new 911 GT3 RS the most?

The interplay of the extremely emotive, high-revving and naturally aspirated engine in conjunction with the new vehicle's precision. You can always place the vehicle with centimetre accuracy, you are literally at one with the car and become part of the overall system. And the most important thing: it means that this car is simply a hell of a lot of fun to drive. Even I can feel it, and that's after nearly 20 years of daily interaction with this kind of vehicle. When I'm unable to drive one for a few weeks, I literally go into withdrawal.

On which race track would you most like to drive the new 911 GT3 RS?

I love the Nordschleife just as much as I fear it. No other race track can offer this mix of emotions.

How can you describe the new 911 GT3 RS from your point of view in one sentence?

The perfect driving machine and much more than just a highperformance sports car … because it ‘talks’ to you.

Winter for many is a time for calm and contemplation. However, we see things a little differently at PCW.

During your three day programme, you will drive a range of Porsche 911’s over various handling courses, covering many hours and miles, always in a drift and always with a smile!

You take the wide body of the Carrera 4 with a 44 mm broader track width across the rear axle and lower the PASM equipped chassis for greater mid corner speed, add bigger brakes, larger brake pads from the 911 Turbo, a savage sounding exhaust system with less sound absorption and flap trickery to work with the newly developed turbochargers. Give the package 20-inch widened silky black, centre lock wheels derived from the 911 Turbo S, with wider rubber than the Carrera S, for increased grip and footprint. Put a call in to the Sport Design team to create a new front apron including open air intakes with a note to have a set of mirrors and GT sport steering wheel sent over to accompany the Sport Crono package and sport plus seats, then you send the to the wind tunnel to reduce lift and apply extra downforce to the rear axle.

Singing the moderation swan song you keep the 3-litre, six cylinder biturbo flat six engine of the Carrera S, but we can’t leave it alone as the R&D department have a newly developed set of turbochargers for you, it only seems fair to lean on the boost pressure for good measure, which gives you an increase of 22 kW (30 hp) now with 331 kW (450 hp), the same output as the 933 GT2. All of which results in improved mid range torque characteristics, faster acceleration and an even higher top speed. Accelerating from zero to 100 km/h at least 0.2 seconds faster than the current S models. The fastest in just 3.6 seconds, keep into it and your top speed is in excess of 300 km/h.

You have created a 911 that on paper, is better than the Carrera S and more practical than the Turbo, a car with a chassis that corners and accelerates better than any Carrera in the range. Your ‘super’ Carrera goes on to complete the 73 corners and 20.83 kilometres of the Nürburgring Nordschleife in just 7:26 minutes on standard road tyres. Twelve seconds faster than its predecessor and four seconds faster than the current 911 Carrera S.

The ‘perfect’ modern 911 has been created, your dream Grand Turismo Sport is ready and now it is time to put it to the test.

Your well toured friend has been pushing you towards the Central West of New South Wales for months and now is your chance to experience these spectacular roads for yourself.

Lets imaging that Porsche called you and said you have the lead on the design team for the new 911 variant, you have to start with the brilliant Carrera S as a base, but you can specify any and every other piece to your puzzle you wish,

feeling to this swan song Carrera. Out here it feels perfect for the sweeping linked up corners and with hands on the lovely alcantara wheel and sitting in the part leather part alcantara seats, it feels like a sweet spot in the range. In a nutshell it’s great, we are talking about a car and a range that are all great cars. All 911s are great from the base to the flagship Turbo S and GT2 RS, but amongst all the variants on offer, this feels like a sweet spot moment on the range ladder. Today this is the wise choice for covering ground in a comfortable sporty way, it sits confidently traversing the gap between the 911 Carrera S and the track focused 911 GT3.

There is a reason why the 911 is an iconic sports car, the dampening is on another level to its competitors, the GTS soaks up the constant punishment dealt out by the country roads. Coupled with the optional rear wheel steering which gives you lightning fast turn-in at speed and requires little angle to navigate through the twists and turns. The car is class leadingly accurate and these characteristics never leave you out of step on complicated road sections. Some of which we have ahead of us on our journey.

Hampton Rd intersection linking Magpie Hollow Rd and Sodwalls Rd, is upon us, this dogleg has caught many drivers out. Sodwalls Rd has a few surprises in store for you - concentration needs to be sharp, two single lane railway bridges sandwich a low sunken concrete slab creek crossing, negotiate with caution, especially when you are on the low side of standard ride height. Beyond these obstacles the road flows back to country predictable and winds its way to a very unique section of asphalt. The way straightens out and dips down to the valley’s bottom, then climbs directly upwards like a rollercoaster to a crest which has you looking at the sky, it’s a hell of a ride and one that takes courage even at signposted speeds. On the way back there is a mid-decent stomach wrenching dip to look out for!

Through Tarana and Mutton falls Rd, you take a left onto O’Connell Rd, with a twist of the dial you let the GTS relax into normal mode and both enjoy the mature smooth rolling rhythm of the marked main road, which giving you a chance to catch your breath before the final run to the finish. A right onto Mayfield Rd changes things again, this road moves with the natural flow of the land and has you back into sport mode, which livens the GTS beneath you. This beautifully enthusiastic entrance road is the perfect crescendo to a great test route for the mightiest of Carreras.

We arrive at Mayfield Garden, an oasis in NSW’s Central West region and beyond, established in 1984. Thirty three years and millions of dollars later, Mayfield Garden has evolved into an epic showpiece, employing more than 60 locals and open to the public 363 days a year. The scope of this ambitious undertaking must be seen to be believed, there is a lake worthy of a major city, complete with obelisk and an avenue of plane trees, as well as several

amphitheatres, a gallery based on the historic Hartley Courthouse, a croquet lawn surrounded by an English rose garden and of course, a maze.

The Porsche’s sense of occasion is matched by the grandeur of Mayfield, formally designed to resemble the great estates of Europe.

The Mayfield Café serves produce plucked fresh from the vegie patch, so as you wander through the garden centre in the morning, you may well be eating from its bounty a little later in the day. They take great pride in the fact that 80% of the produce served at the café has been grown in the gardens or on the farm with the remainder coming from handpicked local partners.

For the casual dining experience on offer - the food is truly a standout and you come away more than happy with the delicious offering.

The day ends in a magical wonderland literally in the middle of nowhere. We exit delightfully surprised by the quality of the destination itself and the horse we rode in on.

What do you drive now?

A Boxster S as my commuter and a GT4 as my track car.

Can you recall your earliest Porsche memories?

My now husband Richard and I were sitting outside in a quiet street having lunch when a then new 2013 Porsche Boxster drove past. As soon as we were home, I was configuring one on the website. I thought about it for a while (after all, I didn’t need a new car!) but after a few months, decided that I was going to buy my very own Boxster. Soon after, I found myself at Porsche Willoughby and I was very lucky to meet Grant Coulson. It was a luxurious experience that any car purchase of the kind should be, but not always is. After a couple of hours, including a test drive, my order was in the Porsche system. Richard happened to be offshore on a business trip at the time, and I remember telling him that night that I had just bought a Porsche!

When did you discover a love for motorsport?

When my Boxster S finally arrived, Richard told me that I had better learn how to drive it! So I enrolled in Levels 1 and 2 of the Porsche Driving School programme in Mt Cotton where I

When you walk into the Willoughby showroom, you’ll know why I say ‘The hero is here”. After an unprecedented amount of hype from Porsche and the press, the Panamera has finally graced us with its presence. PCW welcomed the new model with a small event late in February.

Posing elegantly in their own carpeted area, our Jet Black Panamera Turbo and GT Silver Panamera 4S command a space of their own not only on the road but also on the showroom floor. It is no surprise when clients seem involuntarily drawn to the pair the minute they enter the showroom: that is how stunning and unique these vehicles are! We look forward to introducing you to this flagship model that encompasses a plethora of new technologies, paving the path for future models.

In February I had the pleasure of attending my eleventh Porsche Winter Driving Experience in Finland. Every year a group of adventurous PCW clients join me above the Arctic Circle to drift 911s through the snow. It is unlike anything else you can experience in a Porsche, with temperatures below freezing and atmosphere beyond boiling point. Expressions of interest for the 2018 expedition are now open. Please register your interestw early for this bucket list event.

Porsche announced the new 911 GTS last month and for the first time a 911 Targa 4 GTS: clearly distinguished by its black roll bar – the first we have seen on a Targa. The performance of the car is expected to feel much different to its predecessor and siblings, with Porsche designing new turbochargers for the special.
