Dear Family,

Our church school theme for the next four weeks is God Takes Care of Us.We’ll be walking in the footsteps of the prophet Elisha—and standingamazed at God’s power working through him. We’ll be talking about howGod works that same power in our lives and uses us to help others.

Your child will be challenged during this unit to help others—especiallythose in need. Please encourage him or her in this good work.

Also be sure to ask your child about Korea. That country and its peoplewill become real to us in the next few weeks. Through Korean music, story-telling, art, and drama we’ll learn more about the power of our loving andcaring God.

Please continue to pray for our group!

Korean Panel Art

Walk With Me curriculum, © 2004, 2008, Faith Alive Christian Resources. Permission granted to photocopy this page for classroom use.

Panel 1(Draw a house with a flat roof because that is howthe houses were built at that time in Israel. Thehouse in this story probably had stairs on the out-side that led to the rooftop.)

Once there was a wealthy woman who lived inthe small town of Shunem in Israel. Because shewas a wealthy woman, her house contained furni-ture. (Draw a table inside her house.) Her husbandowned fields and grew wheat.

One day Elisha stopped in Shunem. The womannoticed that he looked tired, hungry, and thirsty. She invited him to her house for a meal. She mayhave served him freshly baked bread and oil fordipping. (Draw Elisha in the house with food toeat.) As the woman and her husband talked withtheir visitor, they knew that someone special satat their table. When it was time for Elisha to leave, the woman said, “Please come again. Any timeyou are in Shunem or nearby.”

“I will,” Elisha said.

After Elisha left, the woman said to her husband,“I’m sure our visitor is a holy man of God. Let’smake a small room on the roof for him.” So theybuilt the room and put a bed, table, chair, andlamp in it. (Draw the rooftop room. You may want tostop and talk about what this structure might havelooked like. It seems to have been more than a tent, which was typical for a rooftop retreat. It could havebeen made of stone, with branches for the roof.)Elisha now had a home away from home. He oftenstopped there. The widow always prepared a mealfor him, and there was always oil in the lamp.

Panel 2One day Elisha and his servant Gehazi arrived inShunem near the green valley of Jezreel. (DrawElisha and Gehazi standing in a field of wheatbeginning to sprout green shoots.) This fieldbelonged to the husband of the Shunammitewoman. Elisha and Gehazi were glad to have aresting place. It was just what they needed aftermany days of travel. Elisha wanted to thank thewoman in a special way.

Elisha spoke to Gehazi. “Call the Shunammitewoman,” he said. “She has done so much for us.Ask her what we can do for her. Perhaps we canspeak to the king or the commander of the armyfor her.” (Draw the Shunammite woman.)

So Gehazi asked the woman what might pleaseher.

“I have a home among my own people,” thewoman said. “That is enough.”

Gehazi and Elisha had a conference.

“She asks for nothing,” Elisha said. “But perhapsthere is something we could offer her.”

“‘Well,” Gehazi answered, “she has no son, andher husband is old.”

Gehazi’s observation gave Elisha an idea. Hespoke to the woman. “At this time next year youwill have a son. You will hold him in your arms.”

“No,” the woman said. “That is too much tohope for. It would only disappoint me if it did nothappen. Do not deceive me or raise my hopes.”

The next year, the woman gave birth to a son.

Panel 3(Draw the field again with the sun high and brightin the sky.) When the child was older, he went outone day to his father in the fields. The goldengrain in the fields was ripe. The bright sun shonedown upon the fields and the workers.

After many hours in the sun, the boy complainedto his father. “Oh, my head, my head!”

The father said to his servant, “Carry him to hismother.”

The boy was carried to his mother and sat on herlap until noon. (Draw the mother with her armsaround the boy.) Then he died. She had beggedthe prophet not to deceive her by promising hera son and then disappointing her. So she knewshe must go to him again and beg that Godwould help her. This hurt was worse than neverhaving a son at all. She carried her dead son tothe rooftop and laid him on the bed of the manof God. Then she closed the door and left.

Panel 4(Draw the woman talking to her husband in thefield.) The woman ran to her husband and said,“Send me one of the servants and one of thedonkeys, so that I may quickly go to the man ofGod and come back again.” She did not tell himwhy she had to go.

Page 8: Full product can be ordered by calling 1-800-333-8300 or ......Elisha and Gehazi standing in a field of wheat beginning to sprout green shoots.) This field belonged to the husband

54

“Why today?” he asked. “It is not a day ofworship.”

“I will go, and it will be all right,” she said.

So he let her get on the donkey, and a servantwent with her. (Draw a servant and a donkey nextto the woman.)

“Make the animal go fast,” she said. “Do not goslow for me.”

They had to travel twenty-five miles to MountCarmel. The woman knew she could find Elisha atthe shrine where Elijah had built an altar to God.

Panel 5(Draw a mountain with Elisha at the top. Thewoman on the donkey and her servant are at thebottom. Who is in the lead—the woman or the ser-vant?)

From high up on the mountain, Elisha saw thewoman coming. Elisha said to Gehazi, “Look! There’s the Shunammite! Run to meet her and askher, ‘Are you all right? Is your husband all right? Isyour child all right?’”

Gehazi ran down the mountain. (Draw Gehazi atthe bottom of the mountain, talking to the woman.)“Is there a problem?” he asked, nearly out ofbreath.

“Everything is all right,” she said, hurrying rightpast Gehazi. With every bit of strength she hadleft after the long journey, she climbed to the topof the mountain.

Panel 6(Draw the woman at the top of the mountain withElisha.) When she reached the man of God, shetook hold of his feet. Gehazi, arriving just behindher, thought she was acting out of control. (DrawGehazi in the picture.) He went over to push heraway, but Elisha said, “Leave her alone! She is inbitter distress, but the LORD has hidden it from meand has not told me why.”

“Did I ask you for a son, my lord?” she said.“Didn’t I tell you, ‘Don’t raise my hopes’? Now heis dead. Help me.”

Elisha said to Gehazi, “Go back with the woman.Tuck your cloak into your belt so that you can runquickly.” Then Elisha handed his staff to Gehazi.Take my staff in your hand and run. If you meetanyone, do not greet him, and if anyone greetsyou, do not answer. Lay my staff on the boy’sface.”

Gehazi took the staff and ran.

But the woman did not leave with Gehazi. Shespoke to Elisha. “As surely as the LORD lives andyou live, I will not leave without you.”

So Elisha got up and followed her.

Panel 7(Draw the boy in the rooftop room flat on the bed.)Gehazi arrived in Shunem first. He went up to therooftop and laid Elisha’s staff on the boy’s face.(Only draw the staff on the boy because Gehazileaves.) But there was no sign of life. The boy didnot make a sound or move.

When Elisha reached the room on the rooftop, the boy was lying dead on Elisha’s couch. Elishaclosed the door on his servant and the boy’smother. Elisha prayed to the Lord. (Draw Elishapraying.) Then he placed his body over the deadboy’s body. (Explain that this action reminds us ofCPR but it was more than Elisha’s breath because hewas depending upon God to give life back to theboy.) Elisha did not concern himself with the factthat touching a dead body would make himunclean. Then, as if he was breathing life backinto the boy, Elisha put his mouth on the boy’smouth. He also put his hands on the boy’s hands. The boy’s body grew warm. Elisha stood. Hewalked back and forth in the room. The boy didnot move. So Elisha stretched himself over theboy once more.

Panel 8(Draw the rooftop room again.) This time the boysneezed seven times and opened his eyes. (Drawseven Z’s for sneezing.)

Elisha called to Gehazi. Gehazi came running intothe room. “Call the mother,” Elisha said. (Draw allof them standing—Elisha, Gehazi, mother, and son.)

The mother came and Elisha said to her, “Takeyour son.”

She fell down at Elisha’s feet and bowed to theground.

Then she took her son and went out. It was astory to tell again and again as her son grew intoa man. And it was good to know that God hadn’tblessed her only to take the blessing away. HerGod was faithful.

GRADES 4-5 YEAR 1UNIT 6 SESSION 3

Follow the clues in the story and mark the map of Damascus and Samaria on your paper. Useyour Bible (2 Kings 5) to help you with the clues.

1. Naaman was a Syrian army commander living in Damascus. Find Damascus on the mapand circle it in red.

2. Under Naaman’s leadership, the Syrians won important battles against the Israelites. Thatmade Naaman a favorite of the king. (The king didn’t know it was really God who allowedthe Syrians to win.) In a raid the Syrians captured a young Israelite girl. She became a slavein Naaman’s house. Find the young slave girl in Naaman’s house. Draw a dish in herhand to show her working.

3. The little Israelite girl was a faithful servant to Naaman’s wife, even though she was a longway from home. It was about _____ miles from Samaria to Damascus. (Write theanswer to 9 x 7, then add 7 to the final total.) Draw a line between the two placesand write the distance on the line.

4. Naaman was not only a smart commander; he was a fair master. But he had one greatproblem. He had leprosy. Put a white spot on Naaman. Do you suppose his leprosybegan on his nose? Or do you think it was on his big toe?

5. One day the Israelite girl spoke to her mistress. “If only my master could see the prophet inSamaria. He would cure the master of leprosy.” After hearing that news, Naaman called forhis chariot and horses. And off he went to Israel. He carried gifts with him. Solve theequations to see what gifts he carried. (You can check your answer in 2 Kings 5:5.)

6. Naaman arrived at the palace in Samaria. The king of Israel sat on his throne. WhenNaaman explained why he came, the Israelite king tore his clothes. Unscramble theletters in the bubble to see what the Israelite king said (2 Kings 5:7).

7. Elisha, the man of God, heard that the king of Israel had torn his clothes. He sent amessage to the king. Find the scroll and decode the message (2 Kings 5:8).

8-9. So Naaman climbed into his chariot and rode to the house of the prophet. Elisha didn’tcome out. Instead he sent a messenger, who said . . . Write the message that Elisha sentby the way of the servant. Find the message in 2 Kings 5:10.

Naaman went away angry. “I thought the man of God would come out to me. Why didn’the call on the name of the LORD his God? I expected him to wave his hand over this spotand cure me of my leprosy. Draw a big arrow pointing to Naaman’s nose or his big toe.

10. Naaman went off in a rage. The rivers in Damascus were cleaner and better than that dirtyriver in Israel called the Jordan. But Naaman’s servants went to him and said, “Why notwash and be cleansed as the prophet said?” So Naaman went to the Jordan River. Drawthe tracks of Naaman’s chariot wheels down to the Jordan River.

11. So Naaman went down and dipped himself in the Jordan ____ times (2 Kings 5:14). Circlea fish for each time Naaman dipped that big white toe or that big white nose into theJordan. His flesh became like that of a young boy, and his nose looked pretty good too.

12. Naaman and his men went back to Elisha. Naaman stood before the prophet and said,“Now I know your God is the only God. Please accept my gifts.” But Elisha would notaccept the gifts.

Page 14: Full product can be ordered by calling 1-800-333-8300 or ......Elisha and Gehazi standing in a field of wheat beginning to sprout green shoots.) This field belonged to the husband

60

After Naaman set out on his journey back to Damascus, Gehazi, the servant of Elisha, saidto himself, “My master was too easy on Naaman. Why shouldn’t Naaman give up some ofhis wealth for his health? I will run after that rich commander and get something fromhim.” Travel through the maze to get Gehazi who is on the road back to Damascus.

13. Is everything all right?” Naaman asked.

“Everything is all right,” Gehazi answered. “But my master sent me to say, ‘Two youngmen from the company of the prophets have just come from the hill country for a visit. Wewere thinking about those clothes made of fine Damascus cloth. Our local market doesn’tcarry that brand. And you know how young men like to dress these days. An outfit of fineDamascus cloth for each of them and a talent of silver would give them the right look toimpress their friends.’” Pick out two outfits of your choice.

14. “By all means, take two bags of silver and two outfits,” Naaman said. So Gehazi took thegifts and went back to Samaria. When he came to Elisha’s house on the hill of Samaria, hequickly put them in the house before Elisha saw the gifts. Then Gehazi stood before hismaster Elisha.

“Where have you been, Gehazi?” Elisha asked.

“Nowhere,” Gehazi answered.

“That’s not true,” Elisha said. “With my spirit I saw you when Naaman got down from hischariot and met you. This is not the time to take _____________, ________________,____________, ______________, _____________, and _______________. Find what Elishasaid was not right to take. See 2 Kings 5:26.

Then the leprosy of Naaman came on Gehazi. His whole body turned white—as white assnow, as white as cotton, as white as the old nose of Naaman.

Jodi opened her eyes. Sunlight streamedthrough her bedroom window. It must havebeen a dream, she told herself. But it seemedso real! In her dream a man named Pacowalked her to an elevator and said, “Godgives you everything you need, because hecares for you.” She could see Paco in hermind. He was short and had dark curly hair. How could she have dreamt up such a per-son? Maybe he was an angel! A part of herwanted to skip and shout that maybe shehad met an angel. Was that possible, shewondered?

That thought made her sit up, wide awake. So much had been happening the last fewweeks. Her mother had given birth to a babyboy—ten weeks too early. Mom and baby Joewere still in the hospital. Was she most afraidfor her mom, for the new baby, or for her-self? On top of all that, a new family hadmoved in next door. Not only were they newto the neighborhood; they were also new tothe country. They came from Korea andcould barely speak English. The girl, Chong, kept asking Jodi to say words in Korean. Itwas fun, but after a while it was hard worktrying to remember all those words. Besides,Jodi’s other friends didn’t want to take theextra time it took to understand Chong. Wasit worth giving up time with her friends tospend time with Chong?

Jodi couldn’t stay in the house anotherminute. She had to get out and think. As shewalked the familiar sidewalks in her neigh-borhood, she couldn’t stop wondering aboutPaco and what he had said.

“Jodi!”

She glanced up to see Karen sitting on herporch. Karen was a lady who came to churchin a wheelchair.

“Looks like you’re lost in your thoughts,”Karen said.

Jodi walked up Karen’s ramp and settled innext to her on the porch swing. “Do youthink angels are real?” Jodi asked. “I mean, can an angel tell you something true?”

Karen smiled. “It depends. Who do you thinkangels are?”

“Well . . .” Jodi thought for a minute.“I guess they’re messengers from God.”

“Did this angel tell you something that istrue to what God would say?”

Jodi stretched her long legs. “I think so. Hesaid God would give me everything I needed, because God cares for me.”

Karen bit her lower lip and then stroked heruseless legs. “That sounds like a messagefrom God, all right. It makes me think ofGod’s providence.”

“Providence?” Jodi asked.

“Yes,” Karen said. “God gives us what is bestfor us.”

Jodi stared Karen’s legs. “Not your accident!”

“No, not the accident itself,” Karen said.“But gradually, after I realized I’d never walkagain, I gave my life to God. And God hasbeen awesome to me, bringing me friendsand helpers. So God turned something badinto something good. Often I think I’m hap-pier now than when I could walk and doeverything on my own.”

Jodi nodded. “My mom and my new babybrother need help. And so do I—help to bea friend to Chong and a big sister to Joe.”

“So,” Karen said, “what will you do?”

“Not be so afraid. Paco must have been amessenger after all.”
