Below is a useful guide to show the different classes of compression available

in this country.

Here is a quick check list which you may fi nd helpful when ordering.

- Product e.g. (Advance/Comfort)

- Compression class e.g. RAL class 2

- Size required e.g. small/medium/large

- Garment type e.g. calf/thigh/tights

- Length e.g. short/normal/ long

- Colour

- Product Code

- Open Toe or Closed Toe

- Male or Female Patient (if ordering a product with a grip top)

- Your name, address and contact details

Helpful Tips

When ordering you cannot search for a product using a pip code on any

operating system.

To fi nd a particular product, search in the name box and also use the name of the

company and then the product name e.g. SIGVARIS Comfort. You will then fi nd a full

list of this product so you can fi nd the exact one you require.

You can also search for a product using the product code and typing this into the

name box on the screen.

On some older systems you have to be very specifi c.

i.e. If you search on the company name on the LV and PCS system it will only bring up

one product and it does not have predictive text capabilities.

The Web based system is predictive on the search.

Searching for products when prescribing

As SIGVARIS offer a wide range of medical compression products,

sometimes you may not be able to fi nd the exact product you are

wanting on GP or pharmacy ordering systems even though the

product may be on their ordering system.

There are 4 companies that supply up to date prescribing information

to GP practices and pharmacy ordering systems.

These are EMIS, VISION, MICROTEST and TTP.

The prescribing information supplied is then available on an

operating system which a surgery, Health Centre or pharmacy may

use one of the following:

- LV SYSTEM (MS DOS)

- PCS SYSTEM (WINDOWS)

- WEB BASED SYSTEM

This information is usually updated monthly.

Information when prescribing

Helpful Tips

Ideally the compression garments should be placed in a washing bag and placed on

a delicate wash.

Use a suitable washing product: Something like a neutral fabric washing powder or

liquid, or SIGVARIS washing solution.

Caution: Synthetic washing powders, fabric softeners, fl uorescent whitening agents,

turpentine and acid or bleach products may damage the elastic yarn in the compression

garment.

After washing, use a low spin speed (never wring the product), towel dry and put in a

airing cupboard or put on a washing line to dry naturally. Please do not use a tumble

dryer to dry your hosiery or place directly onto a radiator.

If looked after, SIGVARIS medical compression garments can last up to 6 months.

Factors to consider to make sure wearers get the most from their hosiery:

- How often they are worn and how they are put on and taken off?

- How have the garments been washed?

Be aware of fi nger nails and rings snagging and laddering the stockings.

Talc, bath and body oils can affect the silicone top bands on stockings so they may not

be as”sticky” as when they were fi rst worn. Cleaning with diluted alcohol or SIGVARIS

cleaning wipes remedies this problem.

Stockings should not be worn more than 6 months as they lose their elasticity. Some

people say that their new stockings are fi rmer than their last pair. This is often because

they had been wearing the previous products too long and perhaps not getting the

best from their hosiery.

Getting the most from the compression garments

• Heaviness and fatigue in the leg

• Heaviness and fatigue in the leg

• Mild varicosis during pregnancy

• Mild varicosis without signifi cant oedema

• Prophylaxis of thrombosis and embolism for immobile patients

• Prophylaxis of the Economy-class-syndrome

• More severe varicosis during pregnancy

• Varicosis with mild oedema

• After superfi cial and deep thrombophlebitis

• After schlerotherapy or surgery to maintain therapeutic success

• Chronic venous insuffi ciency

• After healed venous ulcer in chronic venous insuffi ciency

• DVT to treat symptoms and oedema to prevent or manage manifestations of the post thrombotic syndrome PTS

• Pronounced varicosis with marked oedema

• Advanced chronic venous insuffi ciency

• For healing of serious and recurrent ulcers

• Post traumatic oedema

• Reversible lymphoedema

• Severe post thrombotic syndrome

• Irreversible lymphoedema
