1 SAFETY

1.1 Safety Practices

ThisdocumentdescribesthegeneralsafetypracticesandprecautionsthatmustbeobservedwhenoperatingtheAuto-SashController.

Thisadviceisintendedtosupplement,notsupersede,thenormalsafetycodesintheuser’scountry.Theinformationprovideddoesnotcovereverysafetyprocedurethatshouldbefollowed.Ultimately,maintenanceofasafelaboratoryenvironmentistheresponsibilityoftheuserandtheuser’sorganisation.

PleaseconsultalldocumentationsuppliedwiththeAuto-SashControllerbeforestartingtowork.Carefullyreadthesafetyinformationinthisdocumentandintheotherdocumentationsupplied.Whensettinguptheequipmentorperforminganalysisormaintenanceprocedures,strictlyfollowtheinstructionsprovided.

1.2 Warning Notices

1.3 Precautions

The following precautions must be observed when using the Auto-Sash Controller and associated systems:

•BesurethatthevoltageoftheAuto-SashControllerequipmentcorrespondstothevoltageavailablewhereitistobeinstalled.

•NeverremovethesideorbackpanelsoftheAuto-SashControllerwithoutfirstshutting down the equipment and disconnecting the mains cord.

1.4 General Operating Conditions

TheAuto-SashControllerandequipmenthavebeendesignedandtestedinaccordancewiththesafetyrequirementsoftheInternationalElectrotechnicalCommission(IEC).TheAuto-SashControllerconformstoIEC61010-1(SafetyRequirementsforelectricalequipmentformeasurement,controlandlaboratoryuse)asitappliestoIECClass1(earthed)appliances,andthereforemeetstherequirementsofECdirective73/23/EEC.

Ifpossible,avoidanyadjustment,maintenanceorrepairtotheequipmentwhilstcoversareopenoritisoperative.However,ifanyadjustment,maintenanceorrepairisnecessarywhilethecoversareopen,thismustbedonebyaskilledpersonwhoisawareofthehazardsinvolved.

Whenever circumstances arise that mean an Auto-Sash Controller may be unsafe, make it inoperative. In particular, an Auto-Sash Controller may be unsafe if it:

•Showsvisibledamage.

•Failstoperformcorrectly.

•Hasbeensubjectedtoseveretransportstresses.

•Hasbeensubjectedtoprolongedstorageinunfavorableconditions.

1.5 Environmental Conditions

The Auto-Sash Controller should only be used under the following conditions:

• Indoors.

•Inambienttemperaturesbetween5°Cand40°C.

•Withrelativehumiditybelow80%fortemperaturesupto31°C,decreasinglinearlyto50%relativehumidityat40°C.

•Electricalsupplyfluctuationsnotexceeding+10%ofthenominalvoltage.

1.6 Electrical Safety

The Auto-Sash Controller and associated equipment are designed to protect the user frompotentialelectricalhazards.Thissectiondescribessomerecommendedelectricalsafetypractices.

TheAuto-SashControllerandassociatedequipmentmustbecorrectlyconnectedtoasuitableelectricalsupply.Thesupplymusthaveacorrectlyinstalledprotectiveconductor(earthorground)andmustbeinstalledandcheckedbyaqualifiedelectricianbeforeinitial power up.

When working with the Auto-Sash Controller System:

• Connect the equipment to a correctly installed mains power outlet that has a protective conductor connection.

• Do not operate the equipment with any covers or internal parts removed.

•Disconnecttheequipmentfromalllivevoltagesourcesbeforeopeningittomakeanyadjustments,replacements,maintenanceorrepair.Iftheopenedequipmentmustbeoperatedforfurtheradjustment,maintenanceorrepair,thismustonlybedonebyasupplier’s Service Engineer.

Ifitispossiblethattheequipmentisnolongerelectricallysafeforuse,maketheequipment inoperative and secure it against any unauthorised or unintentional operation.

The electrical safety of the equipment is likely to be impaired if:

•Ithasanysignsofvisibledamage.

•Ifithasbeensubjectedtoprolongedstorageinunfavourableconditions.

•Ifithasbeensubjectedtoseverestressduringtransportation.

1.7 Electrical Protection

Observe the following electrical protection precautions:

•Insulation:ClassIratingforexternalcircuits.OnlyconnectequipmentthatmeetstherequirementsofIEC61010-1,IEC60950orequivalentstandards.

•InstallationCategory:Theequipmentisabletowithstandtransientover-voltagestypicallypresentonthemainssupply.Thenormalleveloftransientover-voltagesisimpulsewithstand(overvoltage)CategoryIIofIEC60364-4-443.

• Pollution Degree 2: Normally only non-conductive pollution occurs. Occasionally, however,temporaryconductivitycausedbycondensationmustbeexpected.

1.8 EMC Compliance

EC DirectiveThe Auto-Sash Controller System is designed and tested to meet the requirements oftheECdirective89/336/EECand93/68/EECandcomplieswiththeEMCstandardEN61326(EMCstandardforelectricalequipmentformeasurement,controlandlaboratoryuse)andEN55011(ISM)ClassA(RFemissions).

FCC Rules and RegulationsTheAuto-SashControllerSystemisclassifiedasadigitaldeviceusedexclusivelyasindustrial,commercialormedicaltestequipment.ItisexemptfromthetechnicalstandardsspecifiedinPart15oftheFCCRulesandRegulationsbasedonSection15.103(c).

1.9 Warning Labels

Warninglabelsattachedtotheequipmentdrawattentiontospecifichazards-refertothisguideandotherdocumentationprovidedwiththeequipmentformoredetailsconcerningpotentialhazardsandanyprecautionsorotheractionsthatmustbetaken.

TheAuto-SashControllerautomatestheopeningandclosingofthefumehoodsash.Automationofthesashmovementprovidesanincreasedlevelofsafetytothecontrolledenvironmentassashescannotbe‘accidentally’leftopenandcanrespondtosafetycriticalinputsfromexternalsourcessuchasfirealarmsandventilationsystemfailures.

Suchautomationalsofacilitatescostsavings,iflinkedtoventilationcontrols,asautomaticallyclosinganunattendedfumehoodallowsextractorfanspeedsandelectricityconsumptiontobereduced.

2.1 Features

The Auto-Sash Controller has the following features/functionality:

1. Auto-Close-Thesashcanbeautomaticallyclosedwhenthefumehoodisunattended.

2. Auto-Open-Thesashcanautomaticallyopen(orre-openifpreviouslyautomaticallyclosed)whentheoperatorreturns.

3. Sash Lock-Thesashcanbeprogrammedtolock,ie.Auto-SashDriveinhibited,whenmovedtoauserdefinedposition,eg.fullyopen,toallowforloadingorsettingupofequipmentinsidetheFumeCupboard.

4. Manual Sash Open/Close-Allowsthesashtobeopenedorclosedmanually.

5. Keypad Pushbutton Open/Close-ThesashcanbeopenedorclosedusingtheKeypadpushbuttons.

6. Footswitch-Thesashcanbeopenedorclosedusinganoptional,thirdpartysupplied,footswitch.

7. Tilt Switch-Anoptional,thirdpartysupplied,tiltswitchcanbeusedtodisabletheAuto-SashControlUnitwhenthesashisopenedformaintenance.

8. Building Management System (BMS) Inputs - The sash can automatically close whenasignalisreceivedfromtheBMS,eg.intheeventofafirealarm.

9. Building Management System (BMS) Outputs - The Auto-Sash Controller can sendanumberofsignalstotheBMSregardingthecurrentstatusofthefumehood, eg. sash position, alarm status.

2.2 Auto-Sash Control Options

Three main control options can be utilised by the Auto-Sash Controller to control the opening and closing of the fume hood sash:•Auto-SashControllerfittedwithTiptronicOpen/CloseControl.•Auto-SashControllerfittedwithSashLowMicro-Switch.•Auto-SashControllerfittedwithSashLowProximitySwitch.

2.2.1 Auto-Sash Controller with Tiptronic Open/Close Control

TiptronicOpen/Closecontrolisthedefaultcontrolsetup,usingaSashPositionSensor(sprungpotentiometer)withadrawwire(1.2mlong)attachedtoeitherthesash or the counterweight. The Auto-Sash Controller can then be calibrated to give one of the following methods of operation:

Method A - Close only(bottompositiononlycalibrated)Thesashautomaticallydrivestothebottompositionwhentheoperatorisnotpresent. Pressing the Downpushbuttondrivesthesashtothebottompositionwhenthe operator is present. The Uppushbuttonisdisabled.

Method B - 2-Position(bottomandmid-positionscalibrated)Thesashautomaticallydrivestothebottompositionwhentheoperatorisnotpresent.PressingtheDownpushbuttondrivesthesashtothebottompositionwhentheoperatorispresent.PressingtheUppushbuttondrivesthesashtothemid-position when the operator is present.

IftheTiptronicfeatureisenabled,manuallytip(move)thesashupwards-thesashdrives to the mid-position. Manually tip the sash downwards - the sash drives to the bottomposition.

IftheAutoOpenfeatureisenabled,thesashautomaticallydrivestothemid-positionwhentheoperatorispresent(slighttimedelayfollowinguserdetection).

IftheAutoLockfeatureisenabledandaSashLockpositionhasbeencalibrated,oncethesashisraisedtoapositionequaltoorabovetheSashLockpositionthesashlocksinitscurrentpositionandtheAutoClosefeatureisdisabled.ThisfacilitatesloadingoftheFumeCupboard.

Method C - 3-Position(bottom,midandtoppositionscalibrated)Thesashautomaticallydrivestothebottompositionwhentheoperatorisnotpresent.PressingtheDownpushbuttondrivesthesashtothebottompositionwhentheoperatorispresent.PressingtheUppushbuttondrivesthesashtothenextcalibratedpositionwhentheoperatorispresent,ie.ifthesashislowerthanthemid-positionthesashisdriventothemid-position,ifthesashishigherthanmid-positionthesashisdriven to the top position.

IftheTiptronicfeatureisenabled,manuallytip(move)thesashupwards-thesashdrivestothenextcalibratedposition.Manuallytipthesashdownwards-thesashdrivestothebottomposition.

IftheAutoOpenfeatureisenabled,thesashautomaticallydrivestothemid-positionwhentheoperatorispresent(slighttimedelayfollowinguserdetection),ifthesashislower than mid position.

IftheAutoLockfeatureisenabledandaSashLockpositionhasbeencalibrated,oncethesashisraisedtoapositionequaltoorabovetheSashLockpositionthesashlocksinitscurrentpositionandtheAutoClosefeatureisdisabled.ThisfacilitatesloadingoftheFumeCupboard.

2.2.2 Auto-Sash Controller with Sash Low Micro-SwitchIftheTiptronicOpen/Closecontroloptionisnotchosen,aSashLowMicro-SwitchcanbespecifiedforfittingbyTELorbythefumehoodmanufacturer.Theswitchcanbearrangedtobeclosedoropenwhenthesashisclosed,dependingonhowandwheretheswitchisfitted.Thewiringarrangementmustbemodifiedtosuittheparticularinstallationandtheoperationalrequirementsofthefumehood.

The following functionality is available:

•Thesashautomaticallydrivestothebottompositionwhentheoperatorisnotpresent.

•PressingtheDownpushbuttondrivesthesashtothebottompositionwhentheoperator is present.

•TheUppushbuttonisdisabled.

2.2.3 Auto-Sash Controller with Sash Low Proximity SwitchIftheTiptronicOpen/Closecontroloptionisnotchosen,aSashLowProximitySwitchcanbespecifiedforfittingbyTELorthefumehoodmanufacturer.Theswitchcanbearrangedtobeclosedoropenwhenthesashisclosed,dependingonhowandwheretheswitchisfitted.Thewiringarrangementmustbemodifiedtosuittheparticularinstallationandtheoperationalrequirementsofthefumehood.

The following functionality is available:

•Thesashautomaticallydrivestothebottompositionwhentheoperatorisnotpresent.

•PressingtheDownpushbuttondrivesthesashtothebottompositionwhentheoperator is present.

•TheUppushbuttonisdisabled.

2.3.2 Personnel SensorThePersonnelSensorisaPassiveInfra-Red(PIR)occupancydetectorwhichdetectsthepresenceorabsenceofthefumehoodoperatorandpreventsthesashclosingautomaticallywhentheoperatorispresentatthefumehood.

Note:Iftheoperatorisdetected,thesashwillnotautomaticallyclosebutcanstillbeopenedandclosedeithermanuallyorbyusingtheUp/Downpushbuttons.

Onpowerup,thePersonnelSensor‘learns’thereflectioncharacteristicsoftheenvironmentwithinitsfieldofviewandstoresthisinformationasreferencebackgrounddata.Thesensorthen‘re-learns’thebackgroundeverythreeminutes,sothatifastationaryobject,suchasastool,isleftinthefielditwillbecomepartofthebackgroundand‘ignored’bythesensor.Then,whentheoperatorisnolongerpresentatthefumehood,thesashwillcloseautomatically,followingapre-setdelaytime,aslongastheSashLightCurtainisnotbrokenandthesashisnotalreadyclosed.

2.3.3 Keypad/Alarm PanelTheKeypad/AlarmPanelprovidesavisualindicationofthestatusoftheAuto-Sash,includinganyfaultconditions,viaaLiquidCrystalDisplay(LCD).

2.3.4 Sash Light CurtainTheSashLightCurtainisasafetydevicedesignedtodetectwhethertheopeningbelowthesashisclearofobstructionsbeforethesashisautomaticallyclosed.Whenanobstructionisdetected,thesashdriveisdisabledandthealarmactivated.TheSashLightCurtaincomprisesaninfraredtransmittermountedononesideofthefumehoodandaninfraredreceivermountedontheoppositesideofthefumehood’sinnerchamber.

Theinfraredtransmitterhasmultiple,closelyspaced,LightEmittingDiodes(LEDs)tofacilitatethedetectionofsmallobjects.

Objectsaredetectedwheninfraredlightfromthetransmitterisnotdetectedbythereceiverduetoanobstructioninitspath.

A separate Sash Light Curtain Control Box includes a sensitivity potentiometer thatallowsthebeamsensitivitytobesetto‘see’glassorotherobjectspartiallytransparenttoinfraredlight.

2.3.5 Under Sash SensorThe Under Sash Sensor is used as an alternative to the Sash Light Curtain and is designedtodetectwhethertheopeningbelowthesashisclearfromobstructionsbeforethesashisdrivenclosed.

Asinglesensorononesideofthefumehooddetectsthereflectionofabeamoflightfromaself-adhesivestripofretro-reflectivetapemountedontheoppositeinsidewallofthefumehood.

Thesensorincorporatesapotentiometerwhichallowsthebeamsensitivitytobesetto‘see’glassobjects.

2.3.6 Sash Low SwitchThe Sash Low switch is used when the Tiptronic control option (see Section 2.2 - Auto-SashControlOptions)hasnotbeenchosenandisusedtosignaltotheAuto-SashControlUnitthatthefumehoodsashisclosed.

Theswitchcanbeeitheramechanicalrollerlevertypemicro-switchoraninductiveproximity switch.

2.3.7 Sash Position SensorTheSashPositionSensor,comprisingaflexiblecable,aspring-loadedspoolandapotentiometer, is used in conjunction with the Tiptronic control option to detect and measureverticalsashmovementandthepositionofthefumehoodsash.

Duringtheinitialon-screencalibrationsetup(seeSection4-SettingUpandCalibrationofAuto-SashControlUnit),thesashcontrollerwilldetectthedirectionoftravelofthesensorandthenprovideinformationonthepositionofthesashtotheAuto-SashControlUnittoenablecalibrationofthesashopenandsashclosedpositions.

2.3.8 Tilt SwitchTheTiltSwitchisanoptional,thirdpartysupplied,componentfittedtothefumehoodtop panel which operates to isolate the Auto-Sash controls when the top panel is openedtofacilitateservicingofthefumehood.

2.3.9 Foot SwitchThe Foot Switch is an optional, third party supplied, componentwhichcanbepositionedonthefloorinfrontofthefumehoodandisusedtoopenthesash.

2.3.10 Sash Drive UnitTheSashDriveUnitisagearedelectricmotorandclutchassemblyusedtodrivethesash open and closed.

Three types of drive are available, none of which preclude manual opening and closing of the fume hood:

• Rack and Pinion drive.

• Chain and Sprocket drive.

• Pulley and Wire drive.

The following section outlines the installation of the various components of the Auto-Sash control system.

Asthesizeandformatofindividualfumehoodsmayvaryconsiderably,specificinstallationinstructionsarenotpossible,thoughtheprinciplesoutlinedbelowshouldremain valid in all cases.

Note:Beforestartinginstallation,ensurethatthesashisfreetomoveinitsrunners.Usesiliconsprayonthesashrunnersoradjustthesashrunner’salignmentifthesashdoesnotmovefreely.

3.1 Auto-Sash Control Unit

3.1.1 Mounting the UnitThe Auto-Sash Control Unit can be mounted as follows:

•Screwedflattotheoutsideofthefumehoodroof(horizontalmounting).

Note: Forhorizontalmounting,thecontrolboxshouldalwaysbemountedwiththelid/frontpanelfacingupwards.

•Screwedtotheoutsidewalloffumehoodwall(verticalmounting).

OncetheAuto-SashControlUnithasbeenpositioned,markitspositionusingthefixingholesintherearofthehousingasatemplate.Then,attachtheAuto-SashControl Unit with screws.

3.1.2 Wiring in the Auto-Sash Control UnitOnafumehoodwithaninnerandoutersidewall,cablestoandfromsensors,themotordriveandtheAuto-SashControlUnitcanberoutedthroughthesidewallandinto the service void.

Onasinglewalltypefumehood,cablestoandfromsensors,themotordriveandtheAuto-SashControlUnitshouldberouteduptheoutsideofthesidewallusingsuitabletrunkingorfixingpadsandties.

When wiring in the Auto-Sash Control Unit, observe the following:

•Inallcases,cablesshouldbekeptclearofmovingpartssuchascomponentsofthemotor drive and sash.

•Inallcases,grommetsshouldbeusedwherecablespassthroughsidewallstopreventabrasionofthecableinsulationand/orsidewall.WhereacableissuppliedwithaDINconnector,thegrommetshouldhaveaminimuminternaldiameterof17mm(0.67”).

•Ensurethatanybendingofthecables,suchaswhenpassingat90°throughasidewall,doesnotleadtothembecomingoverstressed.

3.2 Auto-Sash Keypad/Alarm Panel

AlternativeAuto-SashKeypad/AlarmPanelscanbesuppliedforUSandEUmarkets.Bothshouldbemountedonthefrontofthefumehood,ensuringthereisadequateclearancebehindforthecablesconnectingthekeypadtotheAuto-SashControlUnit.

3.2.1 Fitting the Auto-Sash Keypad/Alarm Panel

1. FittheAuto-SashKeypadtothefumehoodusingeitherasinglegangsocketforUKapplicationsor,forUSapplications,usingacut-outtothe(Version2)dimensions shown in Figure 20 and Figure 21:

• Wire and Pulley Motor Drive.

Theoptimalchoiceofsashdrivetypedependsonwhethertheinstallationispartofanewbuildoraretro-fit,thesizeandconfigurationofthefumehoodanditslocation.

Noneoftheseoptionsprecludemanualoperationofthesash.

3.3.1 Rack and Pinion Motor DriveTheRackandPinionMotorDriveutilisesarackfitteddirectlyontothesashframeandamotordriveassemblyfittedtoaframeworkabovethefumehood.

Thisdrivesystemisidealforretro-fitinstallationswherethereisnoaccesstothesashwiresorcounterweightsand/orwherethesashisfittedtoametalframework,eg.combinationtypesashfumehoods.

3.3.1.1 Installing the Rack and Pinion Drive

1.Raisethesashtothefullyopenposition.

2.Offerupthemotorassemblyandracktoensurethatthereisaclearanceofatleast1.2m(47.24”)abovethetopofthesash.

•Therackissuppliedin1m(39.37”)lengths.

3.Themotordriveassemblyshouldbefittedtoarigidframeworkandpositionedcentrallyabovethesash.

ToensurethattheT-barfixingclearsthebottomofthemotorassembly,thereshouldbeatleast50mmbetweenthetopofthesashandthebottomofthemotordriveassembly,whenthesashisfullyopened

Note:Ensurethattherackisofsufficientlengthtostillprotrudethroughthetopofthemotorassemblywhenthesashisfullyclosed.

4.Oncethemotordriveassemblyisfixedtothefumehood,theT-barshouldbefixedtotherackandofferedupthesashframe.

5.EnsurethattherackisfreetomoveoverthefullsashopeningbeforemarkingupandfixingtheT-bartothesashframe.

Note:Therackmusttorunverticallyat90degreestothehorizontalaxisofthesashframe.

6.Ifasashlowswitchisfittedinsteadofasashpositionsensor,therackwillneedtobecuttothecorrectlengthtoenabletheswitchtooperate.

Closethesashfullyandmarktherackjustbelowthepositionoftheproximitylowswitchatthetopofthemotorassemblytoensurethattherackisclearoftheswitch when the sash is closed.

7.ConnecttheSashDrivetotheAuto-SashControlUnitusingthecablesprovided(redandblackconnectors).SeethewiringschematicinSection3.10-Auto-SashSystem Control Box - General Wiring Diagram.

Note:Itisimportanttoobservethecorrectpolaritywhenmakingelectricalconnections.

8.ConnecttheclutchassemblytotheAuto-SashControlUnitusingthecablesprovided(blueandyellowconnectors).

3.3.2 Chain and Sprocket Drive

Two types of chain and sprocket drive are available:

•ShaftDrive.

• Counterweight Drive.

3.3.2.1 Chain and Sprocket Shaft DriveWiththeShaftDrivearrangement,themotordriveutilisesataperboresprocketandarollerchaintodriveashaftrunningbetweenthecounterweightpulleys.

Themotorassemblyissuppliedfittedtoanadjustablebracketsothatthecorrectchaintensioncanbeset.

TheShaftDrivearrangementcanaccommodateoneortwosashwires.

3.3.2.2 Installing the Chain and Sprocket Shaft Drive

1.Fitthetaperboresprockettotheshaftandensurethatthesprocketissecurelyfitted.Themotordriveandsprocketshouldbepositionedcentrallyontheshaftwherepossibleandthemotorassemblyshouldbefittedtoarigidframeworktosupport the motor.

2.Looselyfitthechainbeforefixingthemotorplatetoensurethechainiscorrectlytensioned and aligned.

3.3.2.3 Chain and Sprocket Counterweight DriveWith the Counterweight Drive arrangement, the chain and sprocket drive system isusedtodirectlyliftthesashcounterweightbyfittingarollerchaintothecounterweightandutilisingaseparatecounterweightandfreewheelingsprockettomaintain the correct chain tension.

3.3.2.4 Installing the Chain and Sprocket Counterweight Drive

1.Oncethemotor,chainandfreewheelingsprocketarefitted,manuallyopenandclosethesashtoensurethatthemotordriveisfreerunningandthechainisnottoo slack or too tight.

2. Fit the motor so that the drive sprocket is in line with the counterweight pulley.

3.Fitoneendofthechaintothecounterweightorsashwireincloseproximitytothecounterweight.

4.Fitthefreewheelingsprocketinlinewiththedrivesprocket.

5.Looselyfitthechainoverthefreewheelingpulleyanddeterminethebestpositionforthechaincounterweight.

6.Fitthechaincounterweightusingacounterweightguideifnecessary.

7.Oncethemotor,chainandcounterweightarefittedmanuallyopenandclosethesashtoensurethemotordrive,chainandcounterweightarefreerunning.

3.3.3 Wire and Pulley DriveWith the Wire and Pulley Drive, the pulley motor drives the sash wire and can accept bothsingleanddualsashwiresystems.Themotorassemblyisfittedinlinewiththesash wires and uses two guide pulleys and a drive pulley.

Thepulleydriveisidealfornewfumehoodsbutcanberetro-fittedifalongerreplacementsashwirecanbefitted.

3.3.3.1 Installing the Wire and Pulley Drive

Themotorassemblycanbefittedhorizontallyorverticallyoneithersideofthefume hood, as follows:

1.Fitthemotorassemblysothattheguidepulleysareinlinewiththesashwire.

2.Runthesashwireoverthefirstguidepulley,aroundthedrivepulleyandthenoverthefinalguidepulley.

3. Once the motor drive is installed, open and close the sash to ensure that the sash cantravelfreely.

3.4 Sash Light Curtain

The Sash Light Curtain consists of three main components and associated wiring:

• Sash Light Curtain Control Box.

• LED Transmitter.

• LED Receiver.

The Sash Light Curtain Control Box is connected to the main Auto-Sash Control Unit.

3.4.1 Installing the Sash Light Curtain Control Box

1.FixtheSashLightCurtainControlBoxontothetopofthefumehood,usingthetabsattachedtothecontrolboxandthescrewsprovided,ensuringthatthereisaccess to the terminals to connect the wiring.

2.ConnecttotheAuto-SashControlUnit,usingthepre-assembledcablesandconnectors supplied, as per the wiring schematic in Section 3.10 - Auto-Sash System Control Box - General Wiring Diagram.

3.4.2 Installing the Sash Light Curtain Transmitter and Receiver

1.Findasuitablepositionascloseaspossibletothebackofthesashtrack,ensuringthatthesashhandlewillnotprotrudeintothelightbeamandthattherearenootherobstructionsoneachsidewall.

2.Carefullyremovethefrontplasticcoversfromtherighthandsideofthelightcurtainreceiverandthelefthandsideofthelightcurtaintransmittercases.

3. Position the light curtain transmitter and receiver on oppositesidewallsensuringthatthebackofthesashhandledoesnotpenetratethelightbeampaths. Thesashlightcurtaintransmitterandreceivershouldbefittedsothattheircableentry/exitpointsareatthetop. Ensurethatthelightbeampathsarefreefromotherobstructions.

3.4.3 Aligning the Light Curtain Transmitter and ReceiverMounting the light curtain receiver and transmitter at the same height on opposing sidesofthefumehoodopeningwillusuallybesufficienttoalignthemcorrectlywithnofurtheradjustmentrequired.

Asmallerrorinalignmentisacceptable,theallowableerrorbeingdependentonthespacingbetweenthetransmitterandreceiver.

Figurebelow,illustratesthemaximumallowabletransmittertoreceivermisalignment/displacementfora0to3m(0to118.11”)rangeoffumehoodwidths.Ascanbeseen,foratypicalfumehoodwidthof1to2m(39.37to78.740”),themaximumallowablemisalignment/displacementrangesfromapproximately20to40mm(0.79to1.58”).

4.Theareaprotectedbythelightbeamsshouldcovertheopenareaunderthesash,typically500mm(20”)fromitsbase. Thelightcurtaintransmitterandreceivercanbepositionedabovethebottomofthesashinthefumehoodaslongastheyarefreefromobstructions. Inatypicalinstallation,thelightpathwouldbealignedflushtothebottomofthesash’sbase.

Note:Thereisa123mm(4.84”)gapfromthetopofthelightcurtaintransmittertothefirstLEDdownanda22mm(0.87”)gapfromthebottomofthetransmittertothefirstLEDup.

5. Oncethelightcurtaintransmitterandreceiverhavebeenpositioned,markthesidewallusingthefixingholesinthetransmitter and receiver as templates.

6.Drilltheholesforthefixingscrews,usingthe2mm(0.08”)drillbitprovidedandattachthetransmitterandreceiver.

7. Onaconventionalfumehoodwithaninnerandoutersidewall,thelightcurtaintransmitterandreceivercablescanrunthrough the sidewall into the service void and up to the Sash LightCurtainControlBoxontopofthefumehood. Ifthefumehoodisasinglewalltype,drilltheholeinthetopsoffitpanelandrunthecablesupthesidewallsusingsuitabletrunkingorfixingpadsandties. Ifagrommetisused,drillasuitableholeinthesidewalltoaccept the grommet. Ifnogrommetisused,drilla17mm(0.67”)holetoclearthecableDINconnector.

Note: Thehole’scentreshouldbeaminimumof35mm(1.38”)fromthetopofthelightbeampath,sothatthecableisnotstressedwhenitbends90°throughtheinnersidewall.

8.PassthecablesthroughthesidewallandconnecttotheSashLightCurtainControlBoxonthetopofthefumehood.

9. Connect the light curtain transmitter and receiver to the SashLightCurtainControlBoxusingtheplug-inRJ45cablesprovided.

11. Fix the light curtain transmitter and receiver to the sidewall usingtheirfixingholesandre-fittheplasticcovers.

3.5 Installing and Aligning the Under Sash Sensor

The Under Sash Sensor consists of two components:

• Sash Sensor

• Retro-reflectiveTapeStrip

1.Fitthesensorsothatitslensisclearofobstructionsandbelowthebottomofthesashhandle.Asuitablebracketshouldbeusedsothatthesensorpositioncanbeadjustedtothebestposition.

2.Fixthe5mcableattachedtothesensortothesashwirealongitslength(wherepossible)usingcabletiesandattachtothesashcounterweighttokeepthecabletaught as the sash opens and closes. Thecableslackfromthesashcounterweightothesashcontrollerboxcanbeencasedinplasticsheathingtoguidethecableandstopitfromsnagging. Thecablecanbeattachedtothesashusingsmalldiametertrunkingifitisnotpossibletofixthecabletothesashwire. Arollerbearingorpulleyshouldbeusedwherethecablerunsoveranymetalsurface.

3.Fixtheretro-reflectivetapestriptotheinsideofthefumehoodontheoppositeside to the sensor. Thecentreoftheretro-reflectivetapestripshouldbepositionedinlinewiththecentreofthesensorwherepossiblehowever,asmalloffsetbetweenthesensorandretro-reflectivetapestripisacceptable.Themaximumoffsetvalues,forarangeoffumehoodwidths,areillustratedinFigure40overleaf.

For example, on a 1000mm wide Fume Hood the sensor can detect the retro-reflectivestripupto+/-20mmeithersideoftheUnderSashSensor’scentreline.

4. Connect to the Auto-Sash Control Unit as per the wiring diagram in Section 3.10 - Auto-Sash System Control Box - General Wiring Diagram.

3.6 Tilt Switch

AsTiltSwitchesareprovidedinavarietyofforms,specificinstallationinstructions are not possible, though the following applies in all cases:

•EnsurethattheTiltSwitchisinstalledinthecorrectorientationieis‘open’whenthefrontpanelisclosedand‘closed’whenthefrontpanelisopen.

• Connect the Tilt Switch to the Auto-Sash Control Unit as per the wiring schematic in Section 3.10 - Auto-Sash System Control Box - General WiringDiagramandtheschematicinError!Referencesourcenotfound.

•IfaTiltSwitchisnotused,linkout/connecttogethertherelevantterminalson the Auto-Sash Control Unit – see wiring schematic in Section 3.10 - Auto-Sash System Control Box - General Wiring Diagram.

3.7 Sash Low Switch

Two types of Sash Low switch can be employed:

• Micro-Switch.

• Proximity Switch.

4.1 Starting Up the Auto-Sash Control Unit

TheAutoSashControllerisstartedbypressingthePowerUp/MenuEntryButtonillustrated in Figure 5 / Figure 6.

1. Switch on the Auto-Sash Control Unit. Onpowerup,theAuto-SashControlUnitperformsaself-testofitsfunctions,LEDsandtheaudiblealarmwhichtakesapproximately3seconds. Duringtheself-testperiod,allinputsandoutputsarede-activated.

2. At the end of the self-test, the Auto-Sash Control Unit will do one of two things: If the Auto-Sash Control Unit has previously been calibrated: • The Auto-Sash Controller will enter Normal Operating Mode and display its

current status or alarm condition on the display. If the Auto-Sash Control Unit has not been calibrated:

•WhentheTiltSwitchinputisopen,thedisplaywillshow‘SashDriveInhibited’.

•WhentheTiltSwitchinputisclosed,thedisplaywillshow‘Auto-SashNotConfigured’.

9.Movethesashtothemiddleofthesashopening(eg.250mmfromfumehoodbase).

10. Press the Up and Downarrowbuttonstofindwhicharrowactivatessashclosing.

11.Pressthebuttonwhichclosesthesash,thenpressEnter. This tells the controller which direction the motor needs to turn to close the sash.

12. Move the sash to the lowest position required.

13. Press Enter.

9.Slowlyadjustthegainpotentiometer(seeFigure54above)clockwise(tomaximum)untilthetransmitterandreceivercan‘see’eachotherie.thereceivercandetectthebeamsentfromthetransmitter.

10.SetSwitch3(sw3)toOfftostorethesettings.

11. Turn the gain potentiometer approximately 5 degrees clockwise to ensure sufficientgain.

12.Useaglassobject(eg.abeaker)tocheckthatsuchobjectscanbreakthebeamacrosstheentireopenfaceofthefumehood. Iftheglassobjectdoesnotbreakthebeamoverthefullarea,slowlyadjustthegainpotentiometercounter-clockwiseuntilinsertingtheglassobjectbreaksthebeam.

13.DisablethebuzzerifrequiredbysettingSwitch4(sw4)toOff. Ifthesashlightbeamsonlyintermittently‘see’glassobjects,ensuresw1issettoOff(shortrange)andrepeatsteps5to14.

4.7 Calibrating the Personnel Sensor

Thesensorisself-calibratingandneedsnoadjustment.Toensureoptimumperformance,ensurethedetectionfieldinfrontofthefumehoodisclearfromobjectsandpersonnelwhenpoweringuptheAuto-SashControlUnit.

Thesensorwillbefullyoperationalapproximately10secondsafterpowerup.TheLEDonthesensor’sfaciawillbegreenifthedetectionareaisclearandredifanobjectortheoperatorisdetected.

To check that the sensor is operational, listen to hear whether the internal relay energisesandde-energises(clicks)whenstandinginfrontofandthenwalkingawayfromthefumehood.

6.1 Control Philosophy

Whenallcomponentsareinstalled,setupandcalibratedcorrectly,theAuto-SashControllerwillclosethesashafterapresetdelay,providedtheareainfrontofthefumehoodisclear.

The following additional protocols also apply:

•iftheuserreturnstothefumehoodduringthedelayperiod,thecontroltimerwillstopandresetoncetheuserhasleftthefumehoodagain.•iftheuserreturnstothefumehoodoncethesashisclosing,thedrivewillstopassoonasit‘sees’theuser.•ifanobstructionisdetectedunderthesash,theAuto-SashControllerwillnotopenorclosethesashandwillgiveavisualalarmtoindicateafaultcondition.•ifanobstructionisdetectedwhilstthesashisclosing,thesashdrivewillstopandgiveavisualindicationtoindicateafaultcondition.Thefaultalarmcanberesetbypressingtheresetbutton.•oncethesashisclosingatimerisinitiated,ifthesashdoesnotclosewithinthespecifiedtime,thesashdrivewillstopandwillgiveavisualalarmtoindicateafaultcondition.•wheneverauserispresentinfrontofthefumehood,thesashcanbeoperatedbyhand.

6.2.1 User PresentWhen the user is detected the sash can be moved in the following ways:• Manually

• Tiptronic

Ifthesashismovedmanuallyforlessthanitsuserdefinedperiodoftime(0to1.5seconds),thesashwilldrivetoitsuserdefinedposition.

Ifthesebuttonsarepressed,thesashwilldrivetoitsprogrammedposition.

6.2.2 User Not DetectedWhen the user is not detected, the sash will Auto-Close to its lowest programmed position following a pre-set delay time unless:

•TheSafetyLightCurtainbeamisbroken(ie.anobjectisdetectedinthesashopening).• The Auto-Sash Controller detects no sash movement whilst the motor is operating.

6.2.3 Auto-Open(UserConfigurable)When enabled, the sash will automatically open when the Operator returns following a pre-set time delay:•ifthesashwasAuto-Closed,thesashwillautomaticallyopenbacktothesamepositionthesashwasinbeforeitautomaticallyclosed.

•ifthesashwasclosedbyanyothermethod(manually,Tiptronically,pushbutton,BMSetc.),thesashwillopenautomaticallyandreturntoitscalibratedposition.

The sash will not open automatically if:

•anobjectisdetectedinthesashopening.• the controller detects no sash movement whilst the motor is operating.

6.2.4 Sash LockThesashcanbesettoLock(Auto-Sashdriveinhibited)whenthesashissettoapresetposition(egfullyopen).

Anaudibleandvisualalarmwillactivatefollowingapresetalarmtimedelaytoremindthe user to lower the sash.

Thisfunctionisusedwhenthesashneedstoremainintheopenpositionforaprolongedperiodoftimetoallowloadingorsettingupofequipmentinsidethefumehood. 6.2.5 BuildingManagementSystem(BMS)InputsThe sash can be set to operate from BMS inputs as follows:• Open/CloseThesashwillonlyAuto-Driveopen/closedatthestart/endoftheday,followinganinputtotheAuto-SashControllerfromaBMS,iftheOperatorisnotpresentandthenoobjectisdetectedinthesashopening.•EV(Emergency)Open/CloseEVaudiblealarmtonewillsoundwhilsttheEVinputisactive.ThesashwillonlyAuto-Driveopen/closeiftheOperatorisnotpresentandnoobjectis detected in the sash opening.InEVmode,thesashcanbemanuallymovediftheOperatorisdetected.ThesashwillthenAuto-Driveopen/closedagain,iftheEVinputisstillactive,whentheOperator is no longer detected.• Fire Alarm CloseThefirealarmaudiblealarmtonewillsoundwhilstthefirealarminputisactive.ThesashwillonlyAuto-Driveopen/closediftheuserisnotpresentandnoobjectisdetected in the sash opening.InFireAlarmClosemode,thesashcanbemanuallymovediftheOperatorisdetected.ThesashwillthenAuto-Driveopen/closedagain,iftheEVinputisstillactive,when the Operator is no longer detected.

6.3 Operation and Alarm Indication

6.3.1 RUN ModeIn RUN mode, the display will show the current status:
