During a special assembly attended by hundreds of Sequoia students in September 2014, Zuckerberg encouraged students to pursue careers in science, technology, engineering and math (StEM) fields. Facebook CIO, tim Campos, then presented Sequoia with 50 Apple laptops and announced the company will fund the development and staffing for a Mobile App Development elective course to be offered at Sequoia in the 2015-16 academic year. COLLEGE SERVICES college counseling assistant | $35K SHSEF helps to fund a Spanish-speaking Career Counseling Assistant, Carlos Garcia, who provides additional 1-on-1 support to students and parents in the college selection and application process. He also assists with many of Ms. Ignaitis’ college- related responsibilities so they can support every student’s pursuit of a college education. college counselor networking visits | $13K In addition to cultivating ongoing relationships with admissions officers from California colleges and universities, our counselors make annual visits to colleges across the country to promote Sequoia’s high quality programs and graduates. As a result, more admissions officers are visiting Sequoia, and more Sequoia students are gaining acceptance. this program is instrumental in building our school’s reputation and creating better opportunities for our students. THE ARTS instrument repair & replacement | $5K thanks to our fabulous Music Directors, Ms. Woodman and Mr. Broome, participation in Sequoia’s band and orchestra program is on the rise! to keep all of our musicians sounding great, we need to maintain, and from time to time, replace school-owned instruments. visual arts materials | $10K Also gaining popularity as electives are visual arts classes: painting, drawing, ceramics and photography. Our teachers are outstanding, but they need many supplies and materials to fully deliver the rich curriculum. SUMMER SCHOOL Summer school geometry | $24K Summer School Geometry will be offered next summer to enable students to accelerate in their math curriculum and/or to meet their A-G requirements for 4-year colleges. Summer bridge enrichment | $8K In accordance with Sequoia’s college-going culture, all students are encouraged to challenge themselves by taking one or more IB classes. Summer Bridge is a 2-week intensive enrichment program that will be offered in August to prepare students who may not have taken ICAP classes or who need a refresher before entering IB classes in the fall. PTSA PARTNERSHIP program support | $10K the PtSA is an “all hands on deck” organization doing great things at Sequoia! they bring families and the school together with programs such as teacher appreciation, student and staff mini-grants, junior scholarships, reflections Arts Contest, proctoring IB exams, volunteering in the library and organizing the Safe and Sober Grad celebration. SHSEF provides the majority of the PtSA’s operating expenses so that they are focused on delivering quality programs to our community. ptSa mini-grants | $10K the PtSA administers this program which is available to all Sequoia students and staff. Considerations are the number of students who benefit, future recurring benefit, academic and curricular value and compelling need. Grants typically range from $50-$500 and are made twice a year for requests such as guest performers and speakers, training classes, club competition fees, club and classroom supplies and club enrichment trips. TECHNOLOGY AND INNOVATION Keeping the technology and Innovation momentum going, SHSEF will fund the development of a comprehensive computer science curriculum and support staff members to expand their use of technology for instruction at Sequoia, computer science curriculum development | $5K these funds will support teacher training to expand elective offerings ranging from digital literacy to a variety of computer programming languages to prepare Sequoia students for technology majors and careers. teacher technology grants | $5K Our teachers are eager to implement technology to improve the learning environment, but they need time to develop proficiency. Mr. Priest and his staff will award ten $500 grants to teachers for projects and training that support technology and innovation.
