2011-‘12 Peoples’ Clinic Annual Report

The Peoples’ Clinic for Better Health is the center-

piece of St. Joseph Mercy Port Huron’s Mission.

It is a collaborative project in St. Clair County,

including St. Joseph Mercy Hospital and the St.

Clair County Medical Society. The clinic is funded

in part by the United Way of St. Clair County.

Medical care and referral services are available

four days per week in offices leased from Our

Lady of Guadalupe Mission, 3110 Goulden Street,

on Port Huron’s Southside.

The free medical services are available to those

who lack the resources to pay for their care. One-

half of its patients are working poor, who lack ben-

efits or who have insufficient medical coverage.

Volunteers, including physicians from the St. Clair

County Medical Society, help staff the clinic. In

fact, the clinic represents an extensive collabora-

tion between individuals, churches, businesses

and organizations to fulfill the Peoples’ Clinic’s

Mission: To respond to the medical needs of the

economically and socially disadvantaged by

providing medical care and referral services.

Who We Served July 1, 2011 - June 30, 2012 3,931 registered patient visits; and 758 unregistered patient visits 2,505 needed to see a physician 1,396 were assessed by a registered nurse for

a prescription refill 688 participated in counseling sessions 448 first-time visits: representing 11 percent of total visits More than 13,600 prescriptions were written for

clinic patients, with approximately 54 percent of those being filled on site, utilizing donated samples provided by physicians and pharma-ceutical companies and United Way of St. Clair County. The total value of these prescriptions is estimated to exceed $1 million.

95 percent of patients had no health insurance and 5 percent of patients receive some type of Medicaid benefit.

4,453 referrals were made, sending patients to area physician specialists, community agencies or St. Joseph Mercy Hospital.

The most frequent diagnoses were: diabetes (55 percent) cardiovascular disease (47 percent) hypertension (46 percent) bone and joint disease (27 percent) upper respiratory infection (24 percent) mental health (23 percent) Patient Demographics include: 55 percent were from Port Huron 62 percent were women between 40 and

60 years of age 14 percent were minorities

StaffingThe clinic is coordinated by a director and staffed by two part-time nurses and one part-time pharmacist. Local family practice and internal medicine physicians provide patient care.

There are numerous specialists who accepted referrals throughout the year, including 388 specialist and 128 dental referrals. The orthopedic clinic received 118 vis-its; 43 referrals were made to the Lenscrafter’s or Pearle Vision Gift of Sight programs. This extensive referral network makes advanced treatment for clinic patients possible. Many thanks to all of you.

Other Highlights Sweet Touch participants received 579 com-

bined visits. The program focuses on the pa-tient’s personal management of diabetes including consulting with a dietitian and regis-tered nurse as well as Sushma Reddy, MD, an endocrinologist who specializes in the treatment of diabetes. This year, 128 patients participated in the Sweet Touch Program.

The Mercy - Chafty Memorial Golf Outing con-tributed more than $17,000 to clinic operations.

The United Way of St. Clair County awarded $57,000 to support prescription assistance to patients as well as fund counseling at the clinic.

In 2012, Peoples’ Clinic received $4,000 in grant funding from the State of Michigan to support the prescription assistance program.

The Peoples’ Clinic has been a financial benefactor of a number of community events

including: a wine-tasting extravaganza, co-sponsored by Wright & Filippis; and other

events sponsored by the Daughters of Isabella, Suzanne’s Fashions, and various Women’s Life Insurance Society Chapters.

In September 2011, the St. Clair County Commu-nity Foundation Women’s Inititative honored the Peoples’ Clinic with a “favored” charity contribu-tion of $10,000.
