Applying Principles to Your Professional Practice

Culture-Based Leadership For Pacific Islanders and other indigenous people, authentic leadership means mobilizing our past and our ancestral heritage as a vehicle for success in the future. Authentic leadership begins with an awareness of your own values and cultural norms. Using the awareness as a foundation of your professional practice enables greater authenticity, empowerment, personal and professional satisfaction, and the ability to support these positive outcomes in those you lead.

Dr. Mary Therese Perez Hattori currently serves as Outreach Director for the Center for Pacific Islands Studies at the University of Hawai‘i Mānoa and is affiliated with three other graduate programs at the University — Cooperating Facultyfor the Doctorate in Professional Education Practice, Affiliate Faculty for the Indigenous Politics Program, and a Lecturer for the Certificate in Online Learning & Teaching.

Dr. Perez Hattori worked for over a decade at Kapi‘olani Community College as an Associate Professor of Information Technology and Director of the Center for Excellence in Learning, Teaching and Technology. Mary has extensive experience in working with the community, professional development for a number of organizations including local high schools, colleges, and universities, private sector, and not-for-profit groups. Her teaching, community service, and leadership experience, focused on Indigenous leadership models and culture-based leadership, spans nearly two decades and seeks an authentic approach grounded in på‘å taotaotano‘ (Chamoru ways).

This 3-day seminar builds a bridge between oneʻs own cultural sustaining practices and professional leadership development. Increase your awareness of your own cultural values and norms and the culture of your organization and apply directly to leadership and management practices such as time management, resource management, interpersonal communications, developing your leadership philosophy, strategic planning, employee relations, technology use, and community partnerships.

Details Applying principles from your own culture, you will explore leadership models congruent with your culture and learn ways to mobilize your own cultural identity to achieve success and inspire others to do the same. Guided activities help to promote connections between your own leadership experiences and your current leadership roles.

Bring new thinking and different actions in how you lead, manage, and execute your daily responsibilities and work. Reflect and discover strategies and resources for your professional life through your personal culture.
