39

K.U.Leuven PDM-grants short term

Selection criteria

– Mainly: scientific esteem of the candidate, as evident

from curriculum vitae and academic bibliography

(superior quality is mandatory – depending on the

discipline, this can be inferred from high quality peer-reviewed international publications);

– The expected quality of the proposed scientific

research in the period for which the mandate is

applied for

– The likelihood of obtaining a future FWO post-doctoral grant is also taken into consideration, for

candidates who are in accordance with the FWO

post-doctoral grant regulations.

K.U.Leuven PDM-grants short term

During your granted PDM

• It is expected to file an FWO application the next year.

• Extension of mandate in case of maternity leave a.o.

• Educational tasks for a maximum of 2 yearly hours.

• Part time appointment possible but needs permission

from the Chair of the Research Council.

• Part of the research can be conducted at a non-

K.U.Leuven institution. Some larger study leaves should receive permission from the Chair of the Research

Council.

43

• Why (international) mobility?– to build your own reputation, get independent from supervisor

– to be complementary to the work done at K.U.Leuven

– to get new connections all over the world

• Where?– science should lead you: search a professor/research group with a good

reputation (not 2nd class); visit the group/lab first

• How long? – reflection: “minimum 1 year, preferably 2 years”

– academic career: ~6 months (it’s not about time, but about independence)

• Funding?– partial funding from here (be aware: some requires you to return)

– good research groups have (some) money for good post-docs!

• Visum and admin requirements– start timely and check it carefully!
