The following varieties of various hill crops have been released.

VL Dhan 88 (IET 25819, VL 32224): This variety was released by the Central Sub-Committee on Crop Standards, Notification and Release of Varieties for Agricultural Crops, New Delhi for the Northern hill regions (Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh and Meghalaya). It is an early maturing variety (115 to 120 days) under irrigated transplanted ecosystem. On an average of four years, it provided grain yield of 4,963 kg/ha in lower hills. Under medium elevation, it yielded 4,332 kg/ha. It has long bold grain with plant height of 123-130 cm under lower hill and 111-126 cm under medium hill region. It has shown moderate resistance against leaf blast, neck blast, sheath blight and bacterial leaf blight.

Drs. J. P. Aditya, Anuradha Bhartiya, P. K. Agrawal, Rajashekara H., Vijay Singh Meena, J. K. Arya and Devendra Lal

VL Sikkim Dhan 4 (IET 26596, VL 32130): This variety was released by the State Variety Release Committee of Sikkim in collaboration of our institute with ICAR-National Organic Farming Research Institute, Gangtok, Sikkim. It is suitable for organic conditions under early and timely sown conditions for Sikkim mid hills under irrigated transplanted condition. It has unique decorticated grain colour (reddish brown) which may fetch higher price in the market as compared to normal rice. It performed consistently well at Sikkim (4,855 kg/ha). It has an average plant height of 89 cm, medium maturity duration (135 days) with high number of panicles/m2 (344). It showed resistance to leaf blast, sheath rot, brown spot, sheath blight, false smut diseases and also exhibited resistant reaction to prevalent pests leaf folder, stem borer, green hopper and gundhi bug under natural condition.

Field screening of advance lines and varieties of French bean for important diseases

Field screening of advance lines (17) and varieties (04) of french bean was undertaken at High Altitude Testing Station (HATS), Mukteshwar (2250 m AMSL). The aim of this study was to conduct a field screening of better performing french bean advance lines (>95 q/ha green pod yield) with varieties against important fungal diseases prevalent under hill conditions viz., Angular Leaf Spot / ALS (Phaeoisariopsis sp.), Rust (Uromyces sp.) and Anthracnose (Colletotrichum sp.).

The advance line VLFB 1827 recorded with lowest ALS severity (20%). The advance lines VLFB 1819, VLFB 1907 and varieties Pant Anupama & Arka Suvidha showed 0% rust severity. Total four advance lines viz., VLFB 1803, VLFB 1805, VLFB 1806 and VLFB 1908 were observed with 0% Anthracnose severity.

established on Potato Dextrose Agar (PDA) medium (Fig.

conidia were observed, which were repeatedly branched,

irregularly verticillate, bearing clusters of divergent, often

irregularly bent, flask-shaped phialides (Fig. C). Conidia

were hyaline to pale green in color, with smooth walls and

formed in slimy conidial heads clustered at the tips of the

Feeding deterrent effects of plant extracts against soybean sucking bug (Chauliops choprai)

Apart from the commercially available Neem based formulations, there are several other plants that show great potential as botanical insecticides. In the present study, fresh and fermented extracts of five different plants (Thuja orientalis, Parthenium hysterophorus, Lantana camera, Artemisia spp. and Datura stramonium) were utilize to test their feeding deterrence and insecticidal activity against C. choprai.

The leaves or seeds of the respective plants were collected, ground and the fresh water extracts were obtained at 10% concentration for direct use. The ground plant parts were submerged in water and allowed to ferment for 24 hours and the extract, after 24 hours, was concentrated to 10% and sprayed on soybean plants. The plots of 1 m2 were covered with insect proof nets and 100 adults of C. choprai were released into each plot after thorough spray of both fresh and fermented plant extracts. Both insect free and insect released plots without any treatment were maintained as control. The study revealed that the fermented leaf extract of Parthenium reduced the pest damage up to 90%, while the fresh leaf extract of Artemisia spp. reduced the pest damage up to 74%.

“VL Polytunnel” – A boon for raising nursery of high

value crops in winter

In hills, the frost during winter season is very common

and the farmers face problem in preparing nursery of

vegetables, flowers and other high value crops due to very

slow germination and growth. Also, the seedlings in nursery

in their initial growth stage are more prone to the damage

caused by frost, hails and snowfall. For such conditions, the

Institute has developed an iron made “VL Polytunnel” as a

protective structure for raising nursery of high value crops.

VL Polytunnel is of semi-circular shape (3.0 m length x 1.0

width x 0.5 m center height) covering ground area of 3 sq

m. This is made of round MS irons rods, MS angle and

transparent polythene. In addition to its primary use in winter

for nursery raising, it can also be used for drying and covering

farm produce during rainy season.

Nutri-smart village

Nutrition sensitive approach was promoted at local level with active participation of women who are mainly responsible for food security of the households in high hill areas. Initial survey showed overall prevalence of malnutrition among women depicted as different grades of CED along with low normal BMI was 36.5 per cent. Women had very low dietary diversity score (3.9) as 69.8 per cent women were found to be consuming less than five food group in their daily diet. As an intervention under NMHS funded project, 63 nutri-gardens with well-established layout were demonstrated in high hills of Pithoragarh and Uttarkashi district to increase the local availability of nutritionally rich food. In order to address the issue of low productivity, high yielding varieties of wheat, finger millet and lentil (major crops of hill region) were introduced along with the recommended package of practices. Diverse food availability was ensured through family farming, nutri-gardens and homestead production of vegetables, fruits, mushroom, honey, micro-greens, fortified crop varieties etc at local levels. After the implementation of nutrition sensitive agricultural intervention, dietary diversity score reached to more than 5. As a result of these intervention, there was significant improvement in consumption of food groups like pulses, other vegetables, mushroom, fruits and milk in diet of beneficiaries. Women were organized in three nutrition focused Self Help Groups viz., Himalayan Self Help Group, Jogat in Uttarkashi district, Poshan Suraksha Self Help Group, Baitholi and Poshan Vatika Self Help Group, Kande-Kiroli in Pithoragarh district. These groups were formed to enhance feasibility and effectiveness of nutrition focused interventions. This model of nutri-smart village has proved that a small nutri-garden of 100 m2 to 200 m2 along with location specific nutrition sensitive agriculture interventions can provide round the year food and nutritional security for a family of 5-6 members in hills.
