VISITOR CENTER FOR ROMAN BATH

*This project is final project of first year - fall semester in Izmir Institute of Techo-nology. The project subject is about de-sign visitor center for Roman Bath where placed in our university campus site in Urla in Izmir. That is a very small project. It is purpose understanding space rela-tionship and design whole project from a unit and create composition from that. My unit in that project is square prism. I aim to with this project, visitors expe-rience sea and their enviroment much more. So, I put sitting elements on it. It is also structure of the project.

SEA WATCH TOWER *The project is about making sea watch tower where is in Foca in Izmir. Foca is a historical place. There are a lot of mytho-logical story. One of that and most popular story in there is Sirens. The story about in Siren rocks there was a very beautiful girls they called Sirens. They attrached sailors who crossed near the Sirens rocks. Sailors wanted to come close to beautiful girls, but girls were only illusion. Sailors who came to Sirens, crashed the rocks and collapse. I very influenced to this story. Then I decide to make my design concept “illusion”. The tower that is my design look like a collapse. It is so inclined. I also respect local archi-tecture of site and I use wood material for ingrated site.

DRAMA SCHOOL*The project subject is about design primary school that study 7-15 years children in there. Project site is placed in Asagicuma village in Bergama in Izmir. This village have a lot of mediterrian pine tree. Length of the tree is about 24 meters and coralla of tree starts 19 me-ters high from earth. It is also main eco-nomical source of people who is living in there. Another economic source is granite rocks. In project site there were a lot of mediterrian pine tree and huge granit rocks that is high of the biggest one is 7 meters.

Education is a social process; education is growth; education is not preparation for life;education is life itself.

When I began this project, I rode a lot of sources about education and chil-dren. Then, I met John Dewey who is educational reformer. I rode his two articles which are “Education and Society” and “Education and Democ-racy”. In these articles, he states that, good education must be include four major topics these are construction, communication, express in finer form, inquiry. With these topics he mention drama. In this educational style, children learn with theater like playing in lesson.

With these arguments, I design a lot of theater scene in my proposal. I think every space espacialy class-rooms like a scene. Than I create a lot of level and use much transperent materials to construct visual contanct every one when they are doing dra-ma. As I said, our site is have very long tree that is mediterrian pine and huge granite rock. I don’t cut any tree and don’t explode any rock in place. I lift my ground floor(red platform) to 0.5 meters from earth. I stick red platform to rock for exhibit rock like art thing and use rock itself for open drama space background like theater curtain. I use red color to enhance nature with contrast.

MULTIPURPOSE SUPPORT CENTER FOR REFUGEE AND ASYLUM SEEKER

*

The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) website states that “The latest figures available show that the number of refugees of concern to UNHCR in mid-2014 stood at 13 million refugees, up from a year earlier.” The agency was founded in 1951 to support about one million people who could still not return to their homes after World War II and has been helping to find sustainable solutions for refugees and asylum seekers around the world.Turkey is on the crossroads to Europe and has long been an active passage for mi-grants and asylum seekers who legally or illegally want to go to European countries. Since the start of the conflict in Syria the refugee crisis in the world has assumed an unprecedented scale and its effects are being felt all around the country.

Being one of the easiest spots to cross the Aegean to European Union territory, Izmir has been receiving an immense number of people who were displaced due to the Syrian civil war. This summer, the total number of people who had to come to Izmir due to the Syrian conflict is estimat-ed about 400000, of which only 75000 are registered in the records of the Turkish Immigration Office.

In the long and arduous journey towards a safe haven in Europe, asylum seekers are in dire need of support. Adults and children are under severe psychological and physical strain as they can hardly find adequate food and shelter, while they simultaneously try to heal the traumas of their displacement.

In this project you will design a com-plex that will facilitate the support that is so preciously needed. In developing the project we will consult the experts of ASAM (Association for Solidarity with Asylum Seekers and Migrant, that works in association with the UNHCR in Izmir.

project site*Project site is placed Kahramanlar dis-trict in Izmir. That place close to trans-portaion center of Izmir that is called Basmane. There are railway, seaway transportation. Usually refugees arrive city from that place. Kahramanlar district also is one of the most crowded district of Izmir. For that reason, project serve like a public space. Another reason of public space existing is local people and refugees integration.

border*

My design concept about border in architectural and sociological term that is about between inside - outside and local people - refugees. Firstly, I tried to go beyond ordinary building form in the city that is totaly enclosure and mas-sive. I designed openess building form that have unrecognizable boundary. I also did some programatical change. Ground floor of the building, I designed public spaces that is integrate refugee and local people in there. I called this space event space. First and second floor of the building service for refu-gees. Order of spaces was prepared for refugees needs. Service space is locat-ed underground.

It is totally open to street. That is create all ground floor being a public space.. Unlike totally close building as around of my design, this is more welcoming for refugees and local people.

This gridal structure also provide pro-paganda area for refugees. Actually refugees need to announce their own voice.
