TEN days ahead of theCopenhagen ClimateChange conference, agroup of Australianstudents have taken off ona solar cycling challengeacross the country.

The 3775km RodeRAGE— Ride AgainstGreenhouse Emission —from Darwin toMelbourne is to raiseawareness for green-house emissions and toraise funds for globalsustainable energy andfood programs.

‘‘We want people to seethe link between climatechange and poverty and ifordinary kids can make adifference, everyonecan,’’ team leader TonyAnderson said.

Technician JacobBaxter, 18, said he wasproud of being a part ofthe team who got arevolutionary solarbicycle ready for the trip.

‘‘We will be riding thesolar bike for 10 days,between 300 and 500km aday, up to a speed of130km/h — 70 per centpowered by pedaling, 30per cent by solar power.

‘‘Cameras willbroadcast every move toour website and two

support vehicles will bein constant contact withthe rider via VHF.’’

Ryan Decker, 16, wasdue to ride the first leg toKatherine on the solarbike — a result of morethan 10 years ofdevelopment — leavingDarwin on Thursday.

‘‘It is great that ourschool provides such aspecial subject forstudents, where we canlearn about mechanicsand science andteamwork — and putsuch a great projecttogether and really getthe bike on the road,’’ theyear 10 student ofDamascus College inBallarat said. ‘‘It’s gonnabe a great challenge for agood cause.’’

A PROFESSIONAL hunter said hewas forced out of a communityplagued by feral camels after author-ities insisted he have a union ticket.

Jim Craig shoots and butcherscamels in WA and sends the meat toPerth to be processed for pet food.

He said he spent three months inDocker River last year but was forcedout by bureaucratic red tape imposedby the Central Land Council.

‘‘I was shooting 600 and 750 camelsper month in Docker River,’’ he said.

‘‘But the CLC gave me such a hardtime. They wanted the meat dyed, thenthey said I wasn’t processing it properly.The last straw was when they asked forthe number of my Meat Workers’ Unionticket. That was it for me.’’

CLC director David Ross said the

council had got involved because ofconcerns raised by traditional owners —owners were unhappy about carcassesleft strewn around the community.

‘‘They gave Mr Craig a licence agree-ment .... he left the community forreasons unrelated,’’ Mr Ross said.

Mr Craig said he employed local indi-genous workers and had paid money tothe community for each camel killed.

‘‘I employed the local people. I had aripper bloke,’’ he said. ‘‘He was the bestever, better than white blokes ... abrilliant worker.’’

But Mr Craig said he pulled out ofDocker River in October last year.

‘‘If I had have shot 700 camels a month,there wouldn’t be 6000 camels runningaround now ... would there.’’

NT Government this week agreed tofunding for an aerial cull of the camels.
