What Is A Light Emitting Diode?

A Light Emitting Diode (LED) is a ‘solid state’ electronic component with the

characteristicsofadiodei.e.itonlyallowselectricalcurrenttoflowinone

directionthroughit.WhenthecurrentflowsthroughanLEDinthecorrect

direction,theLEDproduceslightofaspecificcolour.

LED’sonlyproducelightofcertainspecificcolour.Duetoavariationinthe

method used to manufacture LEDs that emit white light, different colour

temperatures are available - e.g. 6500 K, 5500 K, 4700 K, 3200 K and 2700 K.

How Do LEDs Work?

At the heart of every LED there is a very small piece of semi-conducting

material called the LED ‘die’. The die can be considered in the same way as

thefilamentinalamp,becauseitisthediethatproducesthelight.Thesizeof

a high power LED die is approximately a 1mm cube and for other LED types

much smaller.

Thebaseofthedieisgluedorsolderedintoafinemetalframework(thelead

frame).AveryfinewirecalledabondwireisattachedtothetopoftheLEDdie,

whichhasaveryfineconductivemetalpatternonit.Thewireisattachedtothe

other side of the lead frame.

When electricity of the correct voltage and polarity is applied to the LED via the

leadframecontacts,currentflowsthroughthedie.

The different properties of the layers in the die cause between 50 and 90%

of this electrical energy to be converted into light at the junction by a process

called‘injectionelectroluminescence’.Thisprocessissignificantlymore

efficientthanvirtuallyanyotherlightsource!

Efficiency

Unfortunately, a large proportion of the light produced at the junction does

not escape from the die and is reabsorbed, the remainder being converted

toheat.Asthisisanongoingdevelopmentprocess,efficiencyisincreasing

continuously.Evenso,theLEDisveryefficientcomparedtoconventionallight

sources. For example, an LED spotlight will consume only 5 to 10% of the

energy of a halogen spotlight to achieve the same performance.

in 1907 by H. J. Round experimenting with Silicon Carbide. However, as he

was really looking for new ways of radiolocation in seafaring, his discovery was

completely forgotten about.

ThenetresultisthattodayLEDshavetheefficiencyandlightoutputtobe

large area video displays, car instrument and switch illumination.

Since 2005 further developments have seen a rapid growth in the use of LEDs

for higher levels of illumination. For example LEDs replaced incandescent

lamps (including headlamps) in cars in 2010.

In December 2007 Italy decided to join Australia and Ireland to ban incandescent

light bulbs. The ban took place in 2011. More European countries are planning

on following Irelands and Australia’s “bright” decision in the near future.

LEDs are already used for general lighting applications and decorative lighting

and will replace many conventional light sources in the near future.

Timeline of LED Development

1907:Thephenomenonofelectroluminescencewasfirstobservedinapiece

of Silicon Carbide (SiC) by Henry Joseph Round. The light emitted was too dim

to be of practical use.

1950s: British experiments using the semiconductor Gallium Arsenide (GaAs)

lettothefirstLEDintheearly1960s.Itproducedinfra-redlightandwasused

in sensing and photo-electric circuits.

1962:ThefirstvisiblelightLEDswereproduced.Theywereredandnotveryefficient.

1970s: Green LEDs were produced, and then yellow ones followed. Yellow was

initially achieved by combining red and green LEDs in one package.

1980s:Thefirst‘super-bright’LEDswereproducedbyusingGalliumAluminium

ArsenidePhosphide(GaAlAsP).Theyappearedfirstinred,thenyellowandgreen.

Early 1990s: Ultra-bright LEDs were produced using Indium Gallium Aluminium

Phosphide(InGaAlP).ThefirstblueLEDsstartedtoappear.TheyusedSilicon

Carbide, but their output was very dim.

Mid-late 1990s: Ultra-bright blue Gallium Nitride (GaN) LEDs arrived in the mid

1990s. These gave rise to white LEDs, in which the blue light from the chip is

absorbedbyfluorescentphosphorsandre-emittedaswhitelight.

Early 2000s: Recently developed LEDs are now producing ultra-violet light.

White LEDs

An LED die emits coloured light that is virtually monochromatic, so to produce

whitelightatechniqueisusedthatissimilartothatusedinfluorescenttubes.

Inafluorescenttube,agasdischargeproducesultravioletlightwhichcauses

aphosphorcoatingmixontheinsideoftheglasstubetofluoresceandemit

usable white light.

Structure of a single chip white LED:

• AphosphorisaddedtothenormallyclearepoxycoveringtheLEDdie.

Alternatively the latest technology provides a more homogeneous white

light using chip level conversion (CLC), applying a thin phosphor layer on

top of the die.

• AblueLEDdiestimulatesthephosphor.

• Thephosphoremitsayellowishlight.

• ThelightfromthephosphorandtheblueLEDcombinetoproducewhite

light of different colour temperatures.

Colour Temperature

Because the white light is produced by mixing the light from two sources (die

and phosphor) and the proportions of light from the two sources can vary,

the colour temperature of a white LED can lie between 2700 K and 11000

K. Grouping of these LEDs is therefore essential to ensure that there is little

perceived difference in colour between individual discrete LEDs or LED modules.

TheluminousefficacyofwhiteLEDsisbetterthanatungstenhalogenlamp.

Multi-colour LEDs

The light from individual LEDs, particularly the primary colours red, green and

blue, can be mixed together to produce a wider range of colours.

By incorporating a red, green and blue (RGB LED) die into the same package

the LED can be used for applications ranging from large area video screens

using up to 50,000 LEDs per square metre, to colour changing luminaries for

lighting whole buildings.

Why Use LEDs For Lighting

Key features:

• Longlife(upto50.000operativehourswith70%oftheluminousflux

guaranteed) clean light without components IR and UV high safety factor

due to the low voltage feed

• Verylowheatdispersion(noburnrisk)

• Nomaintenancecosts

• VerylowEnergyconsumption

• Instantlighting(lessthen100ns)

• Highperformances

Reliability

Unlike the majority of lamps, LEDs do not suffer ‘catastrophic failures’

(i.e. stop producing light in normal operation). With an LED, the light output

gradually reduces over time, the rate of light output reduction being

dependent primarily on the average operating temperature of the LED die

(the junction temperature).

As the time for the light output of an LED to decline to a level where it is no

longer usable could be tens of years, then the agreed method for specifying

LED lifetime is the time after which the light output falls to 50% of its original

value. Even with this method, the lifetime for LEDs under the right conditions

can be as much as 150,000 hours (17 years) continuous operation and the

LEDisstillemittingusablelight!

As LEDs are solid in their construction and are not made from fragile materials

they have a high immunity to shock and vibration.

Efficiency

As mentioned above, it currently needs only 1 white LEDs to duplicate the light

output of a 20 Watt halogen bulb, but the power consumption of the LEDs

wouldonlybe1.2Watts!However,afluorescentlampwouldconsumeinthe

region of 8 Watts to produce the same amount of light. At present white LEDs

canofferenergyefficientalternativesinsome,butnotallapplications.

Inapplicationswherecolourisutilised,LEDsoftenofferahigherefficiencythan

filteredwhitelightsources,includingfluorescenttubeswhichreducesheat

dissipation,energycostsandthesizeandcostofpowersupplies.Thisinturn

reduces the design and construction cost of luminaries as there is no need to

accommodate LED replacement or to deal with very high temperatures.

Recessed and surface mounted

The METRIS collection has been developed around the METRIS

spotlight which integrates a ‘light sandwich’ composed of a 24 LED

module and a high-performance pix-screen light. The METRIS range

allowsforsevendifferentconfigurationsincludingfullyrecessed,

surface mounted and angled surface mounted. The extra thin 8mm

installationdepthand57-60mmdiameterholeofthebasicfitting

makes METRIS a perfect replacement for halogen spotlights.

The low heat output of LEDs means that this spotlight can be safely

recessed into an 8mm hole in 16mm board without having to allow

for ventilation and heat gaps. The high performance of the LEDs

(120 lumen per watt), the carefully selected colour temperatures

(warm white and the new natural white), the high yield pix-screen

light, and the wide range of mounting accessories available (surface

mounting spacers, inclined spacers, stainless steel mountings for

easyretrofitting,sensorsandcabling)maketheMETRIScollection

8mm diameter.

Surface Installation

Two types of spacers allow for surface mounting

of METRIS lights. The SP version is a straight

mounting block 12mm high. The OB version has

a20°angletoallowthefittingtobeinstalled

against a vertical surface where the power cable

can be easily hidden at the back of the cabinet,

whilst ensuring uniform lighting of the

worktop surface.

Stainless Steel Spacer Installation

There are three types of stainless steel spacers

in the METRIS range all being surface mounted

andbeingidealforretrofittingsituations.

EVOMETRIS and MAYA both have extended

housings which run back to the vertical surface

allowing the power cables to be easily hidden,

while moving the light position further forward.

GIZA is a more traditional triangular housing

having a 20° angle of inclination which allows

the light to spread further away from the

vertical surface.

Recessed Installation with Switch

AKIRA V12 unites the versatility of a recessed

spotlight with the practicality of an integrated

switch. The mounting is stainless steel with a

black rocker switch. Minimum hole depth

TouchLED TLD Sensor Operation

Domus Line have perfected the TLD Sensor

‘TouchLED’ dimmer switch and incorporated

this innovative device into many of their latest

lighting designs. This multi-function switch

also has been added to the ‘master and slave’

lighting system in some devices.

The switching on/off of the devices connected

to the TLD Sensor is carried out with the single

touch of the LED on the TLD Sensor.

It is possible to adjust the intensity of the light

byholdingafingerontheLED.Abriefflashof

the LED indicates that maximum brightness

has been reached. The brightness level will be

memorizeduntilthenextadjustment.

The TLD Sensor also integrates a ‘night-light’

function which activates only when the devices

are switched off. In a daylight or bright

environment, the LED on the TLD Sensor glows

with a soft dim light. With low or no light, the

brightness of the LED increases providing a

handy ‘night-light’ function. The ‘night-light’

function can be activated or deactivated by

TheTLDSensorisfittedwithasafetyprogram

that turns off all connected devices after

18 hours of continuous operation.

A further feature of the TLD Sensor is ‘auto-on’

that automatically turns on the connected LED

fittingsatthepreviouslysetluminosity.This

function is especially useful for the automatic

turning on of a collection of Lights for example

in a show room. When the main light switches

are turned on, the detail lighting will activate at

their various pre-set brightness without having

to adjust all the levels individually.

On the surface, semi-recessed or completely recessed

Registered design

As a result of research carried out by DOMUS Line’s technical staff,

DREAM brings together unique lighting effects and professional

lighting solutions. DREAM is a courtesy light designed to be

installed wherever decorative lighting is required. The DREAM unit

is characterised by a stainless steel insert that acts as an anti-glare

screen and a Soft Touch electronic switch. DREAM has a thickness

of only 10mm and can be installed on the surface, either as semi-

recessed (keeping only the diffuser out of the recess) or completely

recessedsothattheunitisflushwiththesurroundingsurface.

Made from injection techno polymer, it has a polycarbonate diffuser

withasatinfinish.DREAMintegratesahighpowerLED,whoselight

projection is conveyed inside the thin diffusing screen, exploiting

thephysicalprincipleoftotalinternalreflection.Thefulllighteffects,

with lighting of the perimeter, and the ‘star’ effect which produces

a blade of light that accentuates on the four corners, are unique to

DREAM and have a strong effect.

DREAM is also available with RGB technology and a built in colour

changing sequencer. With a simple touch of the Soft Touch switch,

it is possible to either choose your desired colour, or to start a wide

ranging mix of colours from purple to pink, from orange to cyan,

fromdeepbluetolightblueandbeyond!Thecolourchanging

sequence can be stopped at any desired colour making it possible

to customise the light colour to suit your emotions. The design of

the DREAM, with no sharp edges, very low heat output, and extra

low voltage makes it an ideal lighting solution in hotels, and even

for use in children’s bedheads.

recommend that a 7mm deep groove is

created so that only the diffuser is left out to

mounted within a recess that is 10mm deep.

Thesemi-recessedandtheflushrecess

installations are made easier by the shape of

the unit with 12.5mm radius corners.

The power cord is 2 metres long and equipped

with MiniPlug Connectors. The unit also has a

Soft Touch electronic switch to turn it on, turn

it off and to adjust the intensity of the light.

RGB Technology

DREAM RGB is also available with RGB

technology with LED lights that change colour.

It has the same physical characteristics as

the standard model. The operation and the

adjustment of the colour is very simple and

designed so that even children can use it.

With a touch of the switch, the unit is turned

on to the last colour saved. With a subsequent

longer touch (3 seconds), the sequence of

colours is activated (red, green, blue and

all the intermediate shades). To stop the

sequence on a favourite colour, quickly touch

the switch when the desired colour has been

found. To turn off DREAM RGB, stop the

sequence of colours and then proceed with

another short and fast touch.

FLEXYLEDisahighlyinnovativeproductintheLEDflexiblestrip

market. Two models have been designed with different connection

systems to suit a wide variety of situations and installation types.

Conceived to allow a universal system of strip lighting without the

need of soldering equipment and allowing an IP44 protected strip to

be used, FLEXYLED CR incorporates a range of straight line modules

with an innovative quick plug system. This allows modules of different

lengths and 90° corners to be joined together in various ways to suit

virtually any situation. This connection system ensures a consistency

in the spacing between the individual LED chips, even at the joins and

thus keeps the light projection consistent and without shadow areas.

The LED modules are available in four different lengths and can be cut

every 50mm allowing each individual installation to be custom built.

FLEXYLED CH is designed to connect various lengths of LED strip

light together with an innovative solderless clip system. 25 and

5 metre rolls of IP20 LED strip light are simply cut to length and

clipped together to complete the installation.

The FLEXYLED LED chip is extremely high performance, with

87 lumens per watt and is available in two colour temperatures,

Warm White, and the new Natural White. All FLEXYLED strip lighting

hasahighlyreflectivewhitebackingand3Mself-adhesivebacking

tape for fast installation on virtually any smooth surface.

12VFourdifferentsizedmodulesareavailablefor

connection in a continuous line that can be a

maximum of 6 metres long. All modules can

be cut to lengths of 50mm increments without

affecting the performance of the LEDs.

All modules are equipped with micro

CR connectors.

The 2 metre power supply cord is sold separately

and is required to connect power from the

transformer to the FLEXYLED CR modules.

One power supply cord is necessary for each

individual run of FLEXYLED CR. The power supply

cableisfittedwithCRandMiniPlugConnectors.

FLEXYLED CR can be easily cut to lengths

of 50mm increments. This allows individual

installations to be customised.

90° corners are made simple with

FLEXYLED CR corner modules. Available

in both left and right hand versions, these

cornermodulesarefittedwithmicroCR

connectors which ensure a consistent gap

between LEDs and therefore an even light

flow.Thiseliminatestheshadowareas

LED strip lighting around corners.

Highly resistant double sided adhesive

backing strip provides fast and simple

installation without the need for tools.

The highly transparent resin coating on all

FLEXYLED CR modules protects the LEDs

against moderate mechanical shock and

provides a protection rating of IP44. This

allows the FLEXYLED CR to withstand

splashes of water from any direction.

3 lengths of interconnecting cables are available

to allow for breaks in the lighting stream, without

having to run an additional power supply cable,

for example installing FLEXYLED CR either side

of a range hood. Interconnecting cables are

A new release from Domus Line is the

FLEXYLED CH. An innovative clip system

for joining Flexyled strips together to suit

any application. Using the FLEXYLED Rolls

20m IP20 Strip and these cutting-edge clips,

allows a strip to be constructed in virtually any

configurationupto6mlong.Stripslongerthan

6m will require an additional power supply

cable. To use the FLEXYLED CH clips, simply

slide the LED strip under the contacts on the

clip (making sure to align the + & - markings)

and snap the clip closed.

The 2 metre power supply cord is sold

separately and is required to connect power

from the transformer to the FLEXYLED CH.

One power supply cord is necessary for

each individual run of FLEXYLED CH. The

powersupplycableisfittedwithCHand

MiniPlug Connectors.

FLEXYLED CH can be easily cut to lengths

of 50mm increments. This allows individual

installations to be customised.

Thanks to an innovative clip system, FLEXYLED

CH can be joined quickly and easily without the

use of tools.

Highly resistant double sided adhesive backing

strip provides fast and simple installation without

the need for tools.

FLEXYLED CH has a protection rating of IP20.

3 lengths of interconnecting cables are available

to allow for breaks and corners in the lighting

stream, without having to run an additional

power supply cable, for example installing

FLEXYLED CH either side of a range hood.

Installation:

Surface and embedded

FLEXYLED RGB has been developed using Domus Line’s superior

RGB LED technology. Colour changing sequences have never been

easier with the availability of remote control units which allows for

various pre-set colour mixing patterns or solid colours covering a wide

spectrum. This makes it possible to personalise a lighting installation

to suit various moods and to individually match or compliment any

décor. FLEXYLED RGB has been designed to incorporate a special

quick connect Micro RGB connector system which eliminates the

need for time consuming and messy soldered connections. This

connection system ensures a uniform and consistent spacing between

the individual LED chips, thus eliminating shadow areas and bright

spots caused by uneven joints in the LED strip. The FLEXYLED RGB

modules are available in four lengths, which can all be cut to length in

75mm increments, and 90° corners are also available to continue the

smoothlightflowevenatthecorners.Highquality3Mself-adhesive

backing tape and interconnecting cables make the FLEXYLED RGB

both easy and quick to install.

Fourdifferentsizedmodulesareavailablefor connection in a continuous line that can be a maximum of 5 metres long. All modules can be cut to lengths of 75mm increments without affecting the performance of the LEDs. All modules are equipped with Micro RGB connectors.

The 2 metre power supply cord is sold separately and is required to connect power from the transformer to the FLEXYLED RGB modules. One power supply cord is necessary for each individual run of FLEXYLED RGB. ThepowersupplycableisfittedwithMicroRGB and MultiPlug connectors.

FLEXYLED RGB can be easily cut to lengths of 75mm increments. This allows individual installations to be customised.

90° corners are made simple with FLEXYLED RGB corner modules. Available in both left and right hand versions, these cornermodulesarefittedwithMicroRGBconnectors which ensure a consistent gap between LEDs and therefore an even light flow.Thiseliminatestheshadowareasproduced by other methods of running LED strip lighting around corners.

Highly resistant double sided adhesive backing strip provides fast and simple installation without the need for tools.

The highly transparent resin coating on all FLEXYLED RGB modules protects the LEDs against moderate mechanical shock and provides a protection rating of IP44. This allows the FLEXYLED RGB to withstand splashes of water from any direction.

‘TouchLED’ dimmer switch and incorporated

this innovative device into many of their latest

lighting designs. This multi-function switch

also has been added to the ‘master and slave’

lighting system in some devices.

The switching on/off of the devices connected

to the TLD Sensor is carried out with the single

touch of the LED on the TLD Sensor.

It is possible to adjust the intensity of the light

byholdingafingerontheLED.Abriefflashof

the LED indicates that maximum brightness

has been reached. The brightness level will be

memorizeduntilthenextadjustment.

The TLD Sensor also integrates a ‘night-light’

function which activates only when the devices

are switched off. In a daylight or bright

environment, the LED on the TLD Sensor glows

with a soft dim light. With low or no light, the

brightness of the LED increases providing a

handy ‘night-light’ function. The ‘night-light’

function can be activated or deactivated by

holdingafingerontheTLDSensorfor15

seconds after which, the deactivation of the

functionwillbenotifiedby2slowflashesof

theLED,oritsactivationby3fastflashes.

TheTLDSensorisfittedwithasafetyprogram

that turns off all connected devices after

18 hours of continuous operation.

A further feature of the TLD Sensor is ‘auto-on’

that automatically turns on the connected LED

fittingsatthepreviouslysetluminosity.This

function is especially useful for the automatic

turning on of a collection of Lights for example

in a show room. When the main light switches

are turned on, the detail lighting will activate at

their various pre-set brightness without having

to adjust all the levels individually.

Capsens V13 SensorCAPSENS V13 is a new cutting edge electronic

capacitive sensor designed to be totally

concealed behind most non-metallic materials

including wood, plastic, glass and many other

opaque or transparent materials. It operates at

12V dc so is therefore safe and easy to install

and can switch up to 11 connected 12V dc LED

fittingupto30Wmaximum.

The CAPSENS V13 switch is operated by

lightly touching the surface of the material over

the position where the sensor is concealed.

Supplied with 2 metre power and switch cables

with MiniPlug connectors and a distribution

block, CAPSENS is truly the way forward in

12V dc LED control. CAPSENS V13 must be

connected in line between the power supply

andtheLEDfittings.

To operate the CAPSENS V13 switch, touch

the area of the surface directly over where the

sensor is concealed. It is possible to adjust the

intensity of the connected LED lights by holding

afingeronthe‘activationarea’.Abriefflashof

theLEDfittingconnectedtotheCAPSENSV13

indicates that maximum brightness has been

reached.Thebrightnesslevelwillbememorized

until the next adjustment.

The ‘activation’ area is about 50mm diameter

and the maximum thickness of the material

on which CAPSENS is installed must not be

more than 30mm for wood, 12mm for glass or

20mm for plastic. CAPSENS also integrates the

functions ‘soft-start’ and ‘soft-stop’ and will

automatically turn off after about 18 hours.

A further feature of the CAPSENS V13 is

‘auto-on’ that automatically turns on the

connectedLEDfittingsatthepreviouslyset

luminosity. This function is especially useful for

the automatic turning on of a collection of

Lights for example in a show room.

When the main switches are turned on, the

LED lighting will activate at their various pre-set

brightness’s without having to adjust all the

levels individually.

*This data is indicative of the sensitivity of CAPSENS V13 and

can increase or decrease dependant on the composition of

the material to which the sensor is applied. CASPSENS V13

cannot be installed on or behind metalic surfaces and for

other materials such as granite, marble and composites it is

recommended that a preliminary test is carried out before

finalinstallation.

IFR Sensor is an infrared sensor. The sensor

detects changes in temperature associated

with the movement of people and animals

TLD SensorTLD Sensor is the latest in multi-function

switches for LED lighting. Operating at 12V dc

with a maximum load of 30w, it is available in

twoversions;itcanbesurfacemountedwith

concealed clips (TLD V12), or recessed into an

11mm deep recess (TLD V13). A 2 metre long

power cable with MiniPlug connectors and a

distributor block with provision for connection

of 11 devices (maximum load is 30W @ 12V dc)

are provided as standard. TLD Sensor must be

connected in line between the power supply

andtheLEDfittings.

The switching on/off of the devices connected

to the TLD Sensor is carried out with the

single touch of the LED on the TLD Sensor.

It is possible to adjust the intensity of the light

byholdingafingerontheLED.Abriefflashof

the LED indicates that maximum brightness

has been reached. The brightness level will be

memorizeduntilthenextadjustment.

The TLD Sensor also integrates a ‘night-light’

function which activates only when the

devices are switched off. In a daylight or bright

environment, the LED on the TLD Sensor

glows with a soft dim light. With low or no light,

the brightness of the LED increases providing

a handy ‘night-light’ function. The ‘night-light’

function can be activated or deactivated by

holdingafingerontheTLDSensorfor

15 seconds after which, the deactivation of

thefunctionwillbenotifiedby2slowflashesof

theLED,oritsactivationby3fastflashes.

TheTLDSensorisfittedwithasafetyprogram

that turns off all connected devices after

18 hours of continuous operation.

A further feature of the TLD Sensor is ‘auto-on’

that automatically turns on the connected

LEDfittingsatthepreviouslysetluminosity.

This function is especially useful for the

automatic turning on of a collection of

Lights for example in a show room. When the

main light switches are turned on, the detail

lighting will activate at their various pre-set

brightness without having to adjust all the

levels individually.
