VCE v IB Diploma

VCE Programme

Allows students to specialise in specific curriculum areas

Completion of the course through standard units

School based assessments are much more structured and prescriptive. They are completed mostly during class time.

Greater ability to lower or heighten academic rigour depending on course selection.

IB Diploma Programme

Promotes education in a broad range of learning areas

TOK, CAS and Extended Essay provides students with additional skills and understandings

Expectations of greater amount of independent learning within the programme.

Known for being academically rigorous and good preparation for university level study.

Allows VCE students to complete a Year 12 study

during Year 11.

Students who take a unit early will gain experience in

working in a VCE study while there is less pressure

on them.

By taking a VET unit, this may count to your study

score and also provide you with a qualification that may

be useful to you in your future.

Allows students to accumulate a 5th and/or

6th subject, which will each contribute up to 10 marks

extra towards an ATAR score.

Students may choose to complete one VCE Unit 1/2 subject in their Year 10 as a preparation for the IB the

following year.

The VCE subject selected might provide the

foundation for the study of that subject at the Higher

Level in the IB.

Choosing to study a VCE or VET unit in Year 10

• Entry into VCE / IB units requires previous experience in D or E level units or recommendation from subject teachers.

• In consultation with subject teacher’s and Head of House, students should consider taking one VCE or a VET course during Year Ten

• You should consider VCE units that would be best completed in Year 11.
