The restructuring of a non-resident familytrust which holds operating or tradingcompanies in a variety of jurisdictions, dueto certain of the beneficiaries’ relocation tothe United Kingdom. This required ananalysis not only of UK tax considerationsbut also local law requirements and thejurisdictions where other beneficiaries areresident to ensure that the solution weproposed, and are now implementing, works from the perspective of alljurisdictions involved.

It is a fascinating andmoving film as it talks about both historicalevents and the relationships and humanfrailties of the protagonist Alan Turing, theUK mathematician who essentially inventedthe computer. What charity do you support?

I am a supporter of Asthma UK as a resultof being a life-long asthma sufferer whichnow, in adulthood, is managed reasonablywell but which caused periods ofhospitalisation as a child. It really can be a debilitating, as well as life-threatening,illness, and the differences which I haveseen in treatment of the course of mylifetime have been significant, which canonly be helped by further research.

How did you get into triathlon training?

The triathlon training was borne out of along term goal to complete a triathlonwhich, during 2014, I finally decided to dosomething about rather than simply moveit from one year’s goal list to the next. I lovebeing out on my bike – for the challenge, the scenery, and the chance to exploredifferent means of transport. The swim legcomes fairly naturally, having been broughtup by the beach and being on or nearwater for much of my childhood. The runleg is the most challenging – I’m yet toexperience a runner’s high and find it a realslog to get through.

Use of a family investment company tostructure and manage a commercialinvestment property portfolio in a familywealth management context.

Your best film or book recently?

I picked up the Malcolm X autobiographyas I am in a book club. It was fascinating togain some insight into the mind of such arevolutionary individual. He was intelligentand articulate although his ability to writeand orate was self-taught and developedwhile in prison. What I found striking washis conviction in what he believed at anygiven time and how that drove his causeand which ultimately led to his death.

This was made even more so by the factthat his views changed over time frombeing very radical to more moderatelatterly. He, therefore, had the admirableability to change based on his accumulatedknowledge and experience despite howfiercely held his earlier views were.

Your best film or book recently?

The Shipping Man by Matthew McCleery. Moore Stephenshas long shipping heritage and the business of sea, asdoes the Moore Stephens firm in the Isle of Man. On apersonal basis, I am privileged to have shipping clients inmy portfolio. International shipping is incredibly complexand unlike any other – hovering over the promise ofphenomenal success is the spectre of financialdisaster. This novel, written not by a novelist but by arecognised expert in shipping finance, captures that in auniquely personal way.

A favourite film would be TT: Closer to the Edge. AlthoughI am not a biker, having lived in the Isle of Man for much ofmy life means each year I experience the TT event when30,000 people come over for a visit on an Island with apopulation of just over 80,000. The contrast with FormulaOne couldn’t be starker. The potential for death means ithas long been deleted from any international motorcycleseries. The financial rewards to competitors who win in theTT would hardly buy an executive lunch in the city ofLondon. However, that’s not why they do it.

Which charity do you support?

I would love to be able to spend some time with BarackObama because I think his style of leadership and integrityis an inspiration.

What are you studying for and what have you learned?

I've studied for and passed my ACA and CTA, but mybiggest challenge to date is learning how to be a parent.I'm expecting my first new-born and I'm swiftly learningit's another level beyond professional qualifications, although the late-night studying for the CTA andassociated sleep deprivations has prepared me well forparenthood.

What interesting client work have you been involved in?

The most interesting work often involves intergenerationalor family transfers. Considering the impacts for all partiesof these transactions is fascinating - for the parents whoare often letting go of their life's work, for the children whoare embarking on a new and exciting chapter and for otherconnected parties like business employees, advisors orcharities, who may have to re-adjust to a new way of doingthings. At the end of the day, as a Private Client advisor, the best bit of the role is getting to know interesting peopleand successfully helping them through often stressfulsituations: if you don't like people then private clientprobably isn't for you.
