MICHIGAN ACCORDION SOCIE-

TY CELEBRATES ANNUAL

YOUTH NIGHT by Linda Mar-

shall

The Michigan Accordion Society

(MAS) held their Annual Youth

Night at the America Polish Cul-

tural Center on June 19, 2012.

Sixteen young musicians from

local music studios took part in

the event. Youth Night was start-

ed in 2000 as a way to encourage

young people in their musical

studies and to expose them to the

beauty and versatility of the ac-

cordion and its music classical

to jazz, rock to old standards,

ethnic to country. Youth Night

gives students, regardless of the instrument they play, a chance to perform before an appreciative and encouraging

audience.

MAS was established in 1996 by a number of professional musicians, instructors, people who play for their own en-

joyment and those who just like accordions and accordion music, to get together for a musical night each month. One

mission of MAS is to provide music scholarships to young, non-professional music students studying the accordion.

Scholarships assist them with music lessons or provide assistance with entry fees, travel and hotel accommodations

when participating in accordion competitions sanctioned by the Michigan Accordion Society.

Vickie Robasin, daughter of the late Gus Zoppi, continues her fathers legacy, teaching the joy of music to young and

old at the Gus Zoppi Music Center in Sterling Heights. She has many students who will be representing Michigan in

the National American Guild of Music Competition being held in Troy, Michigan the end of July. These students com-

peted according to age groups and length of study at the AGM Great Lakes Regional Competition held at the Airport

Westin Hotel in April. Winners became eligible to participate in the Nationals.

Youth Night gave several of these young musicians a chance to perform their competition pieces.

Local music studios who sent students included Evola Music, Huber & Reese, Bobby George, Faye Mao Studios, Gus

Zoppi Music Center and Linda Jolliff of Allegan, Michigan. The audience enjoyed a variety of music played on accordi-

on, piano, drums, violin, guitar and electric keyboards.

All-girl band, Bitter Sweet , comprised of Lauren Dapoz age 14, Katie Williams age 14, and Lindsey Williams age 12,

all students at Zoppi Music, kicked off the evening's entertainment. Abhinau Tiwari, a 17 year-old with hopes to be-

come an Eagle Scout in the near future, sang an outstanding rendition of Some Enchanted Evening from South

Paci?c", which would have made the late Ezio Pinza smile. Samuel Wood performed a great snare drum solo, while 17

year-old Ouijit Datta wowed the audience with his guitar technique, playing flamenco-style music. Accordionist

Kayleigh Gratz traveled all the way from Allegan, Michigan with her teacher to perform.

Other student performers were: Abhishek Rao age 8, Esha Tiwari age 8, Malika Khaira age 10, Allyza Vallino age 11,

Anthony Wiederhold age 11, Brian Berta age 12, Julia Wood age 13, and Nicholas Byrnes age 14.

Midway through the evening performers, parents and MAS members enjoyed pizza, cookies, potato chips, a mixed

fruit bowl, cake and pop. Each Student Performer received a Red Excellence Award Ribbon and an Award Pin. They

will also be receiving Certificates of Appreciation, along with an open invitation to perform at future MAS meetings.

We were back at the Forestre Banquet Center in

Rochester Hills, MI with our Student MAS member

and featured performer 9 year old Zoe VandenBurg

who drove all the way with her Mom and family from

Holland, MI. Zoe performed several medley's and

was very entertaining and did a fine job! Zoe is active

with children's pageants and she uses her Accordion

as her talent during the competitions. Zoe’s Mom,

Wendi said “We had such a good time meeting with

you guys. The HOTEL accommodations were PER-

FECT! Thank you again for having ZOE as a Feature

Performer. She has great memories!” We are looking

forward to our next visit with our entire family.” We

were very happy to have her perform for us. Please

come back soon!

We followed Zoe’s performance with a Open Mic night,

other performers were John Schollak and Andy Caru-

so who performed several duets by their former in-

structor Tony Dannon. Other performer's included

Sam Randazzo, Bob Berta, Chet Wisnoski Jim Rand,

Rich Stoey, Joe Recchia, Natale Emanuele to name a

few. Very nice turnout. Special thanks to Steve And

Darlene Storlaruk for their facility and for making our

event very successful!

June 17, 2012 Andrea Caruso daughter of MAS Member Andy

Caruso receives Master in Music and celebrated her Accom-

plishment in style with several of our MAS members. Pic-

tured Left to right Joe Recchia, Bill Cario, Andrea Caruso, Andy

Caruso, John Schollak, Walt Lipiec

Andrea Caruso began studying the accordion at the age of five

under the direction of Lana L. Gore at the Music Centre in Dear-born Heights, MI. Andrea showed great talent at an early age

winning regional competitions hosted by the American Guild of

Music, and national competitions hosted by the American Accor-

dionists’ Association as well as the American Teacher’s Guild. At the age of 13, Andrea competed in her first international com-

petition in Castelfidardo, Italy. That year, she was also invited to

perform as a guest artist with the Plymouth Symphony Orches-tra. She returned to Europe a second time at the age of 15 to

compete at Le Grand Prix in Geneva, Switzerland where she re-

ceived second p lace in her division. At 16, Andrea became the

U.S. champion at the annual American Accordionists’ Associa-tion convention and shortly after she traveled to Budapest, Hun-

gary to compete in the Coupe Mondiale.

Andrea continued to develop as a musician at the university

level. In 2005, she began pursuing an undergraduate degree at

Saint Xavier University in Chicago, IL. There, she studied piano and voice and as early as her first year was invited to perform in

the university’s Honors Recital. Although Andrea says she’s an

instrumentalist at heart, in the end vocal performance won her

over. She studied with Dr. Jan Bickel at Saint Xavier, and re-ceived her bachelors of fine arts in Vocal Performance in 2009.

A year later, Andrea began a Masters program in Vocal Perfor-

mance at the Chicago College of Performing Arts. There she studied under the direction of Mark Crayton and performed in

works such as The Magic Flute and Biardot’s Cinderella. She

was also selected to perform in a master class with the renowned

coach Martin Katz. She was so well received by Katz that he invited her to coach with him personally at the University of

Michigan. Although Andrea recently graduated, currently, she is

preparing to travel to Viterbo, Italy where she will be singing the roles of Dorabella, Cosi fan putte, Velatrice, and Suor Angelica.

She is also the alto soloist in Pergolesi’s Stabat mater and Mo-

zart’s coronation mass. Andrea’s parents are very proud of their daughters achievements!

MAS members wish Andrea a great trip and safe travels!

Several of our MAS members are scheduled to be at this year Las Vegas Accordion Festival. We are looking for more MAS members to join us and there is still time, so please don’t miss the great International Accordion event, The MAS is up for the “Forsini Award” (Award given to the most improved Accordion Club in the country) It would be very nice to have a sizeable group to hopefully receive this award. There still time to register. This will be a great event so don't miss out!

Our MAS Member Michele Kramarz attended the DSO Concert at

the Ford Estate, featuring Julien Labro. My Husband Tom & I really enjoyed the concert, there were about 3 thousand peo-

ple there, It was VERY hot, But the music was great. Ju-

lien arranged many of the selections, and played in eve-

ry piece. He did get a chance to talk about his love for the accordion, how the accordion was his instru-

ment of choice, even though he was featured on the ban-

doneon and the accordiona (or accordionica) a cross be-

tween an accordion and a harmonica. Very unique quali-ty. He did play his chromatic on most piec-

es, though. The audience really seemed to enjoy the pro-

gram. There were several Antonio Carlos Jobim selec-tions. He did a great arrangement on the final piece--Libertango

- which included a part for both of the vocalists. VERY EXCIT-

ING arrangement! I've heard both Julien and Peter Soave per-form it before, and always liked it, but the vocal parts add-

ed great new dimensions to this piece. The vocalists were great-

-Pa ulinho Ga r cia (Bra z ilia n) a nd Gra zyna

Aguscik (POLISH! Yeah!). They both live in Chicago now. Both had incredible voices--great jazz vocals on "Falando de Amor".

cordion talent in the next pageant! Of 50 com-petitors she was the ONLY accordion performer there. Her playing was perfect! The Judges placed a singer(1st), a baton twirler (2nd) and a dancer (3rd). Many people came up to her af-terward & said she should have had a placing. We felt very good coming to such a HUGE pag-eant. She still had a smile on her face. VERY Proud to be a MAS member and shared the fact she was a MAS member with her other little competitors, HOW exciting is that!

ACCORDION HISTORY from http://www.accordions.com/history/migration.aspx

Where it all began - Between 1750 and 1850 the population in Europe almost doubled to 255 million people. Consequently, people in the industrial regions became poorer. In Germany, for example, between 1841 and 1913 over six million Germans emigrated to avoid poverty. Similar emigration happened from much of Europe and Great Britain. Many sought fortune in America, and some took their instruments with them - mostly harmonicas which reminded them of their homeland.

After a time, people began to ask their relatives to send them accordions, and soon after manu-facturers began receiving orders from around the world. Sales representatives also began to set up business in North and South America and the Asia Pacific regions. They received orders as they were known and trusted by their relatives back at home.

MAS Last Note News

Attention MAS Members…..we are introducing a new Membership Perk! We our releasing an Accordion Performers White Page Directory on our Website. From time to time we get phone calls or notifications through our website from someone that would like to hire an accordionist to perform for an event. In the future we will direct all callers to our website / provide only this listing so that they can select an ac-cordion performer accordingly. In order to be on this list you must be a current MAS member. If you would like to be placed on this list please contact Bob Berta or Joe Recchia, thank you!

We need your help to search for more members, so please do you part and help support the Michigan Ac-cordion Society by attracting more members to our club to join, if each of us can find one new member, we would surpass our goal, so remember with out members were nothing!

We hope you enjoyed our New Newsletter. As always, we look for comments, so please let us know how we are doing and if we failed to mention anyone at our events our apologizes, we are doing the best we can and could use more assistance, so if your interested in helping out, please let us know!
