The holiday season is a magical and special time for many of us. It is a time of togetherness with loved ones—a time for traditions, a time for joyful spirits celebrating unity. Yet, the holidays are also a time when we reflect on those individuals who are most in need. Whether it is the gift of time, resources or a friendly smile, the holidays feel brighter when we support one another and our greater community. Again this year, our adult volunteers have truly embraced the holiday giving spirit by giving the dollars from their holiday party toward a local cause. The Volunteer Advisory and Recruitment Committee (VARC), a committee of dedicated Summa volunteers, selected four causes as possible recipients of this year’s $1,000 volunteer gift: Battered Women’s Shelter, Project Homeless Connect, Summa Screens and Summa’s DOVE program. The Battered Women’s Shelter provides emergency and supportive service to victims seeking to end family violence. Project Homeless Connect is a community wide effort to bring service providers together in one location as a means both to highlight the many types of assistance available to those experiencing homelessness and to deliver real time aid to those in need. Summa Screens is a cancer screening program through Summa that provides free mammograms and breast ultrasounds to low-income, uninsured or underinsured women. The DOVE (Developing Options for Violent Emergencies) Program provides specialized healthcare to victims of acute sexual assault, domestic violence and elder abuse and neglect. One of the goals of the Y-LEAD Board is to select a philanthropic project to benefit the hospital or local community. This year they selected First Book Greater Akron, a non-profit organization determined to see that all children, regardless of their economic conditions, achieve more in school and in life through access to an ongoing supply of new books. The goal of their project is to collect over 500 new books for this organization. Our teen volunteers believe in the mission of First Book Greater Akron and have demonstrated their support through organizing bake sales, community and school book drives and other fundraisers to support this cause. In the process, these teen volunteers are learning about themselves, one another and our community. Our teen volunteers proudly presented their gift to First Book Greater Akron on December 11th. Volunteers, our community thanks all of you for these many gifts! We hope you had a chance to join us at the gift presentations and be a part of this holiday giving experience. “A Day in the Life of A…” In January, Siomara Marquetti, Coordinator

of Volunteer Services, began to advance her

photography skills to become a professional

photographer. As part of this development, she

created a photo essay project titled, “A Day in the

Life of A…” Siomara wanted to incorporate her

craft into her role at Summa Health System to help

increase visibility and enhance communication

among volunteers.

A photo essay is defi ned as a set or series of photographs that are

intended to tell a story or evoke a series of emotions in the viewer. This

project was created because Siomara wanted to tell a story through

photographs of what volunteers do in their various assignments on a daily

basis, which is how the title, “A Day in the Life of A…” was created.

Each month Siomara chooses one volunteer assignment to photograph

at random from Summa Akron City, St. Thomas or Rehab Hospitals. For

each assignment, thirty minutes to an hour is spent taking photographs of

the volunteer(s). In creating a photo essay, there is no posing or direction

involved; Siomara only takes pictures of the volunteers in action. Once

the photos are complete, Siomara then showcases the pictures at the

beginning of the following month, in the Volunteer Service Centers for all

volunteers to see. She also adds information about the chosen volunteer

assignment that highlights how the assignment benefi ts Summa’s patients,

guests and staff members.

We have received numerous compliments from volunteers about Siomara’s

photo essay project. Volunteers shared that this gives them an opportunity

to see what other volunteers’ responsibilities are in different assignments

and it also helps them get to know their fellow volunteers better.

Siomara said, “I am incredibly honored to know volunteers are enjoying

the project and I look forward to capturing more of our volunteers in action

throughout 2013. I also feel privileged to have the opportunity to highlight

how important our volunteers are to Summa.”

For the month of December, Siomara’s photo essay will focus on the

Women’s Board Gift Shop, of both Summa Akron City and St. Thomas

Hospitals. To see additional photographs or to learn more about, “ A Day

in the Life of A…” photo essay, please contact Siomara Marquetti at

Q: What do you enjoy most about your job as the Coordinator of Volunteer Services?

A: One of the many aspects of my job is recruiting new volunteers. I love the

challenges that come with recruitment, such as fi nding groups to present to,

getting individuals interested in volunteering and targeting our recruitment

plans to fi nd people with the skills, interests and availability needed for the

various volunteer assignments we have available.

When we recruit individuals to volunteer, we encourage them to apply online

at www.thesummafoundation.org. Having our online application allows the

Volunteer Services Department to process and assist individuals much more

effi ciently and effectively.

Q: How have you spread the word about our volunteer opportunities?

A: I have attended volunteer fairs and events, set up information booths and given

various presentations. I also send out yers every chance I get to community

organizations, libraries, schools and more!

We are always looking for new and engaging ways to share our volunteer

opportunities with individuals, organizations or groups. The Volunteer Advisory

and Recruitment Committee has been very helpful with all of its ideas and

suggestions. If you have any additional ideas, I encourage you to share them

with me!

Q: You mentioned that you do target recruitment plans for certain volunteer assignments; can you give examples of some of the things you have done?

A: Teen LEAD Volunteer Program

I am really looking forward to recruiting new teens for next year. Here are

just a few of the recruitment events I have participated in to grow our

program in 2013:

• Hoban High School Volunteer Fair

• I presented to The University of Akron: Talent Search Program. This program

helps teens prepare for secondary schooling.

• I had an information booth set up at North High School for the Health care in

Progress (HIP) Career Night. The event was created for students who have

an interest in working in the healthcare industry.

Adult Volunteer Program

For our various open adult volunteer

assignments, I have been able to participate in many different recruitment

techniques:

• Contacted professors and targeted specifi c courses to give short

presentations or send a yer to build interest with the students.

• Attended Volunteer Fairs at both The University of Akron and

Kent State University.

• Presented to multiple First Year Experience classes at Bryant &

Stratton College.

• Featured speaker at the Breakfast

Optimist Club.

• Attended a Bark in the Park event to

promote our WAGtime program. I set

up an information booth and answered

questions about our program. This

event was also special because

some of our WAGtime teams had the

opportunity to attend the event and

share information about the program

in a short speaking engagement.

Q: Can you tell us about one volunteer assignment we have available:

A: I am ecstatic about the newest volunteer assignment available at Summa in

2013. This volunteer role will have such a high impact on the patients we

serve. It is called the Inpatient Visitor program and volunteers are needed

in the following departments: ICU (T3), Acute Care for Elders Unit (5N),

Mother/Baby Unit (2N/3N) and Heart Failure Specialty Unit (5W). The main

responsibility of these volunteers is to enhance the patient’s experience by:

• Sharing information with patients about the hospital and its resources.

• Visiting with patients and family members and notifying appropriate staff of

any issues or concerns.

• Assisting the patient with other needs such as obtaining magazines and

ordering meals.

If you know someone who may be interested in volunteering in this capacity, or

if you know of any groups or businesses that would be interested in learning

more about volunteerism at Summa, please contact me at (330) 379-5595 or

[email protected].

Permit No. 83

525 E. Market St.P.O. Box 2090

Akron, OH 44309-2090

The Summa Health System Board of Directors approved the purchase of the former Roadway corporate headquarters building located on Gorge Boulevard in North Akron. There has been considerable need for additional administrative space across the system for a number of years. The Roadway building provides adequate space for approximately 800 Summa employees, allowing for: • Centralization of many non-clinical functions • Greater effi ciency/collaboration between non-clinical departments • Additional space for physician practices and patient care needs on

hospital campuses • Future growth of non-clinical/administrative staff

The purchase of the Roadway building is an important component of Summa’s vision for the future and strategic plan. In addition to the benefi ts listed above, Summa now has the opportunity to consolidate various departments for effectiveness and effi ciency that are currently housed in leased buildings or older buildings with less than optimal conditions.

More information will be provided as it becomes available regarding the Roadway building and departmental relocations which are to be phased beginning in the fi rst quarter of 2013. If the department you serve is affected, you will be notifi ed as soon as possible. More information will be shared with volunteers as it becomes available.
