During Fiscal Year 2015, July 1, 2014 to June 30, 2015, United Way of the National Capital Area (United Way NCA) created measureable impact. We changed lives.

It was an extraordinary year for us for another reason. We began our pursuit to do more for

our community by listening. Through a series of community conversations, we listened to

hundreds of people who shared their ideas about what our region needs.

We listened to stakeholders, advocacy groups and policymakers, and we identified opportunities

to make investments that will have a lasting impact on people’s lives. In response, United Way

NCA’s Board of Directors approved our Community Impact goals in March 2015. This $12.3

million investment is our Community Commitment for the next five years.

Our commitment is to create change in three fundamental areas: education, financial

stability and health.

We are excited about our Community Commitment because it is built on the solid foundation

of the work we did last year. As our organization evolves, we will continue to define where our

investments will create the most impact, and where we can do the most good.

There’s a lot of work to be done, and we’re up for the challenge. We’re ready to Do More

for families in our community. We’re ready to Do More for children. We’re ready to Do More to

ensure our community thrives.

Sincerely,

Rosie Allen-Herring

Community Commitment

During Fiscal Year 2015, we developed the United Way NCA Community

Commitment by working directly with our community and partners.

Education

We identified opportunities to increase achievement for low-income middle school

students. Early childhood education and high school graduation are imperative, but

the fault line for dropping out of high school can be traced to middle school. Our

commitment is to serve students in our region’s Title 1 schools, which have high

rates of students who live in poverty and qualify for free or reduced lunch.

Our Commitment: Prepare 12,000 Title I middle school students to transition to high

school performing at grade level and on track to succeed.

Financial Stability

We aspire to move more families in our community towards financial stability by

providing services that will help families plan, save and get ahead.

Our Commitment: Provide 100,000 residents with services that remove barriers to

financial stability and affordable housing.

Health

We will help families achieve their best quality of health with the goal of increasing

student achievement and helping families to thrive.

Our Commitment: Facilitate well-planned, funded and executed programs that will

teach healthy patterns and practices in order to benefit more children and families.

Academic Success

We partnered with City Year at Neval Thomas Elementary and Kelly Miller Middle

Schools in the District of Columbia. Through intensive study programs, 84% of Kelly

Miller students improved their grades in English and 57% improved their grades in

math, as measured via the iReady assessment. At Neval Thomas, an incredible 98%

of students improved their literacy skills on the DIBELS test and 74% improved their

math standardized test scores, as measured by the iReady assessment.

United Way NCA partnered with The Hillside Workforce Scholarship Program

at Drew Freeman Middle School in Prince George’s County, where a grant

was awarded to provide 31 at-risk students with a variety of support services.

As a result, 93% of participating students were successfully promoted

to the next grade.

Mentoring

United Way NCA partnered with Deloitte to co-lead the Mentoring Matters

collaborative, which brings together local mentoring organizations to help

recruit mentors and share best practices.

United Way NCA awarded the Prince George’s County Alumnae Chapter of Delta

Sigma Theta, Inc. a planning grant to help create a mentoring program that

worked with 30 middle school girls. In addition, United Way NCA was among the

founding partners of the Empowering Males of Color Initiative, which works in

tandem with the DC Public Education Fund. This innovative program supports

PK-12 Boys of Color at all stages of their academic careers.

Tax Refunds

United Way NCA is proud to be a part of the IRS Volunteer Income Tax Assistance

program (VITA), which offers 11 sites across the metropolitan area that provide free tax

services to qualifying taxpayers. As a result, more than $19 million was returned

to taxpayers in our community.

In addition, in partnership with Capital Area Asset Builders (CAAB), we equipped

7 tax preparation sites with financial coaches to provide sessions to more than

400 participants.

Workforce Funders Collaborative

United Way NCA invested $15,000 in the Greater Washington Workforce Funders

Collaborative in FY 2015 to support efforts to secure job placements for local residents.

In FY 2015, 173 participants secured employment as a result of this initiative.

Financial Empowerment Centers

As part of our Community Commitment planning process, we identified a need for

high quality financial planning services that would help people who are living in

financially precarious situations to create a budget, save and get ahead.

During FY 2015, we planned and implemented the rollout of our first Financial

Empowerment Center in partnership with Prince George’s Community College

(PGCC). The Center offers access to free financial counseling, housing counseling and

business financial services. Learn more at UnitedWayNCA.org/FEC.

Fun, Fly & Fit

This was the third and final year for the U.S. Department of Education

Carol M. White Physical Education Program (PEP) Grant. The Fun, Fly & Fit

fitness and nutrition program increased the amount of time children and youth

are physically active in and out of school.

Participants spent an average of 80 minutes in play (unstructured exercise)

and 80 minutes in activity (structured exercise) for a total of almost 20,000

hours in play and activity during the 2014-2015 school year.

Family Health Nights

Our Family Health Night events featured free health screenings and games

designed for the whole family. We held Family Health Nights at Hollywood

Elementary School, Rosaryville Elementary School, Clinton Grove Elementary

School, Allenwood Elementary School and Francis Scott Key Elementary School.

Hometown Huddle

In partnership with the Washington Redskins Charitable Foundation, we held a

Hometown Huddle at Clinton Grove Elementary on October 21, 2014, with more than

200 students. It was a day filled with Fun, Fly & Fit games and NFL Play60 activities.

Redskins’ running back Alfred Morris was the guest of honor.

Nick Sundberg joined kids in getting fit and having fun.

FamilyWize

We partner with FamilyWize to build a healthier community. Now entering its fifth

year, the United Way NCA/FamilyWize partnership has helped local residents save

more than $6.5M on prescription medications.

Veteran Student Support

United Way NCA’s Veterans’ Initiative invested in two key initiatives, both focused

on community college student success. At Prince George’s Community College,

we invested in the launch of a new Veterans’ Center. This space was designed

to connect veteran students with their peers and provide a place where they

can receive training and support. Seventy-five clients were served.

At Northern Virginia Community College, we supported the Veteran Student

Success program, which offers specialized support to veteran students. We

also supported the hiring of a dedicated advisor to help these students attain

their goals. Seventy clients were served.

2015 Community Impact Grant Awards

In FY 2015, United Way NCA awarded competitive grant awards to member partners

located in the eight regions that we serve. The awards were focused on creating

sustainable and measurable impact in our three priority areas: education,

financial stability and health. The grants provide thousands of adults and children

with access to medical care, dental care, mentoring, employment placement,

housing, food, basic needs support and other critical services. We worked with

153 grant reviewers across the region for our Community Impact grants process.
