Our dedicated family of volunteers, educators, families, donors and supporters statewide helped make it possible for us to reach 11,739 students -- the most we’ve served in our history -- and give away 138,000 books. We also gave away our 3 millionth book to a child this year! While the 2020-21 school year is full of uncertainties, our staff team is developing program adaptations to ensure we can continue serving local kids and families. With our students experiencing unprecedented changes in learning, they’ll need programs like SMART Reading to nurture their literacy development and social-emotional wellness more than ever next year. And, we’ll need your support more than ever as we work to continue fulfilling our mission of sparking joy and opportunity through the magic of a shared book. Another Year in the Books

Although the 2019-20 program year ended two months early due to the coronavirus pandemic, it was still an impactful year of bringing the magic of books and reading to kids in our local community. Educator Feedback

SMART Reading teachers are asked to participate in an annual voluntary survey reporting progress they have observed for each participating student throughout the year.*

Student Milestones

We survey educators and parents at the end of each year to gain insights about their experiences, which helps us improve our program. The feedback is overwhelmingly positive, revealing significant benefits for children participating in SMART Reading*:

94%94% of educators indicated SMART Reading contributed significantly to their students’ reading motivation and enjoyment.

93% of parents agreed that their children benefited significantly from SMART Reading, including demonstrating improved reading skills and spending more time reading.

93%

*Due to challenges with data collection this year, data is from 2018-19. Our outcome results are generally similar year-over-year.

89% of SMART Reading students expressed greater pleasure in reading or being read to.

For 98% of students, SMART Reading benefited their learning and growth.

88% of our students showed improved confidence in their reading skills.

83% of our students showed improvement in social and emotional skills.

Books, Books, Books!

When schools statewide closed in March, we weren't able to connect students and community volunteers for in-person one-on-one reading (for the balance of the scheduled school year) – a critical part of our mission. However, our statewide staff team pivoted quickly to focus on what we could still do: putting books into kids’ hands.

From March through June, we distributed books at 216 of our 290 sites across Oregon, and delivered over 33,900 books to students at home. That means over 90% of the books we had remaining for the year still found their way into kids’ hands despite wide-scale school closures, and we’ll ensure every last book is distributed. We’re thrilled with this result and the creativity and dedication of our staff and educator partners that made it happen.

Here in the North Coast Area, we gave away 106 books at three sites.
