Breaking new ground—or at least getting ready to!

If there was a metaphor for our first year together in leadership at Habitat for Humanity of Central Lane, it might be to compare our stewardship of the affiliate to overseeing a home renovation. HFHCL turns 30 next year, and has been a force for good in our community since the beginning. We have completed 73 homes in our service area, and provided repairs to almost 40 more. However, like a house that has been around for some time, priorities change, and our organization is looking to adapt to better serve fluctuating homeownership and housing needs. In our case, we are lucky to be working from the solid foundation of the Executive Directors and Board Chairs who have come before us.

With the support of community members, volunteers, and donors, we were able to complete two homes this fiscal year, one in Cottage Grove and another in Eugene, with a third in progress. We also pushed forward on infrastructure for Fischer Village in Springfield, landing a contract for work that will be completed in early 2020. Habitat also opened applications for new homeowners for the first time in two years and we brought on three new future homeowner households.

At the same time, this past year has been one of strong administrative work: renovating our office space (thank you, PG Long Floorcovering, for your generous help!), acquiring a grant for a second ReStore truck, and updating policies and procedures.

However looking at the housing landscape we are also very aware that land will continue to be an expensive commodity. And so as we move towards 2020 it is with an eye towards more repairs (to help keep the available housing stock in good shape), and to innovative housing structures, like a planned cottage cluster in Cottage Grove.

We hope that throughout this report you will see a reflection of the accomplishments of this past year, and the momentum that Habitat is carrying forward into the future.

With gratitude for your support,

Kellie DeVoreExecutive Director, Habitat for Humanity

Board Secretary Tyler Harris brings a team from Moss Adams to volunteer at Habitat

Board service at Habitat focuses on ensuring we have a strong organization. In the last year, we have emphasized board development and training, such as reading financial reports, how to tell the story of Habitat, and understanding the board’s role in fundraising. Our strategic plan lays the framework for us to have impact in our community, in our sector and in our society.

Home #71Misty found herself struggling financially after raising her children and getting a divorce, and she worked hard to rebuild her life and complete the sweat equity hours required for her Habitat house. Misty came to Habitat after she was unable to find safe and afford-able housing options in her area. With construction completed in December, she celebrated her dedication with family and friends, and moved in to her Cottage Grove home in January 2019.

Home #72Bob completed more than 700 hours of sweat equity, more than twice the required 300, before moving into his Eugene home in July 2019. Surrounded by friends and family, we celebrated this Navy veteran’s journey to home two days before 4th of July. An avid gardener, his new home’s yard is already an impressive show-case for permaculture practices.

Lanny Massey helped build 10 homes for Habitat for Humanity of Central Lane as one of the Habitat “Regulars.” He passed away in August 2018, and we greatly miss and appreciate his hard work and leadership.

In fiscal year 2019, the ReStore grew by 11%, increased donations, purchased a new fuel-efficient truck, diverted hundreds of tons of materials from the waste stream and added new team members. None of this could have been accomplished without the 10,600+ hours of hard work our volunteers contributed.

The ReStore received a grant from the Oregon Department of Environmental Quality for $36,932, which allowed us to purchase a new, larger box truck. This new-to-us truck has 2 ½ times the weight limit of our previous vehicle, with the result that pick-ups are more efficient both in time and fuel while boosting the number of pick-up donations we can accept by approximately 35 percent. Most of the ReStore’s donation pickups are in Eugene and Springfield, but the truck occasionally goes out to Cottage Grove, Creswell, Dexter, Veneta and other nearby Lane County communities.

ReStore and Office Staff join forces to paint Misty’s home.

In 2019 we launched a brand new website, which allows customers to schedule pickups and follow our social media feeds. Visit the site to see DIY projects with Restore products, or unwind with a page devoted to all our ReStore Dogs.

We are grateful to our donors, volunteers, and shoppers. You are the lifeblood of this funding arm for Habitat for Humanity of Central Lane.

In Memorium:

Jim Zechmeister began volunteering in March 2015 serving the ReStore with over 1500 hours during his tenure. Jim passed unexpectedly in May, and we miss his spirited hijinks and all-around affable nature.

EventsShady Oaks: October 2018More than 50 guests joined us in a festive fall set-ting to raise over $10,000 for Misty’s home in Cot-tage Grove. The Woodard Family Foundation and Starfire Lumber generously sponsored this event.

Crab Feed: February 2019Thank you to the many guests and volunteers who made this year’s Crab Feed such a fun event! We enjoyed music from local musicians Almost Home band and the annie mae Rhodes Band while we paid tribute to Linda Oxley, who retired after 10 years with Habitat, first as the Executive Director of the Cottage Grove Area Habitat, and then as Field Office Manager for Central Lane.

Special thanks to Judd Van Gorder & Carousel House Catering, Alexis Home Cleaning Service, The Book Mine, The City of Cottage Grove and The Armory, Fisherman’s Market and Restaurant, The Flower Basket, Garden of Ink Graphic Design and Printing, Iris Vineyards, KNND 1400 Radio, Ninkasi Brewing Co, Cottage Grove High School’s Rotary InterAct and Key Clubs, and South Lane Unified School District Food Service

Benefit Breakfast: May 2019Habitat for Humanity International’s first volunteer, Clive Rainey, returned as the keynote for our benefit breakfast, sharing a special message about service and Habitat’s lasting, multigenerational impact on children and families. The event raised more than $30,000 towards a home in Fischer Village, our upcoming 12-home development in Springfield.
