Editors Letter

Welcome to our SEPTEMBER edition of LINK-Magazine.

Well its been a mixed Summer as weather is concerned but that’s not stopped all us local folk enjoying what the area has to offer, as we have seen you all out and about. Rain what’s that - we live by the sea? We like water.

I must say thank you for your feedback after our first edition last month, we are glad that you liked it and as we continue to add more things local we will get even better. One lady rang me to say “we get lots of things through the door, at last its nice to see something that is useful with your varied local content”

LINK Magazine is supported by 100’s of local businesses, as LINK provides cost effective advertising and mass coverage with our 6 magazines. As a result LINK has just had our two biggest months in business back to back.

But its not just about us, as we have been able to promote 100’s of charity and fund raising events through our magazines, helping them get FREE media coverage and become even more successful for the work they do. We appreciate that LINK is not only an effective advertising media but also a useful part of the local community, as well as sponsoring 3 local youth teams.

Congratulations LINK-Spotter Gill Impett of Blackpool who won our ‘Where am I?’ Competition. £50 is on its way to you.

Now is the TIME to INVEST in Solar

Managing Director Chris Brook setup Ultimate Green Energy Ltd after graduating from Durham University and qualifying as a chartered accountant with Ernst and Young LLP. Chris sees the solar panel industry as a great investment opportunity for both home-

owners and business owners. With bank interest rates very low and share prices particularly volatile, investing in solar panels can give you an extremely healthy investment return of up to 12%. When you consider these returns are government backed for 25 years, tax free and index linked it is hard to find a better investment in the current market.

Chris is looking at UGE from a financial perspective and trying to educate property owners that the initial costs of any investment in solar panels are nearly always outweighed by the future income and energy savings. This is especially true when you

consider energy prices are predicted to increase 60% by 2016. Chris also urges property owners considering installing solar panels to invest before April 2012 as the rate of return will be reduced after this date.

While Chris acknowledges there are a number of new companies starting up in the solar industry he believes UGE brings something different to the table. Chris says “UGE are here for the long term and looking to increase our customer base by offering the most competitive prices for a quality solar panel installation. This quality extends from our solar panels to our installation teams to our customer service. We want all our customers to be happy with their systems not only today but 10 years from now.” UGE are also backed by the two managing directors of Smith Group UK Ltd, a local company with over 50 years’ experience in the energy efficiency market

FURTHER SUPPORT FOR FYLDE COAST WOMENS’ AID (FCWA)Lytham St. Annes Lions Club have given financial support to FCWA for the past several years and the current year is no exception.

The club’s Welfare Committee decided to give its wholehearted support to two local fundraisers who recently completed sponsored swims in aid of the charity and were presented with a cheque for £500 at the club’s Handover Dinner at Lytham’s Green Drive Golf Club. Nikki Walsh swam in the 1 mile Great North Swim down Lake Windermere and Deana Whalley completed 2 miles in the St. Annes Pool.

In a statement issued by FCWA local manager Marily Haye to Club PRO Colin Holt, she described how the organisation had been in existence since 1991 and is staffed mainly by female volunteers who make support available to victims of domestic abuse. FCWA are concerned for the consequent effect on the victims, their families and the communities in which they live.

Domestic violence is known to be a rarely ‘one off’ event, and usually begins with verbal bullying and then escalating through intimidation to physical violence. Many women are too frightened to seek help and want to avoid upsetting loved ones. In the past year 2010/11

FCWA have supported more than 6,600 women, children and young people in the Wyre, Blackpool and Fylde areas, which are quite astonishing figures and illustrate the need for the support which they offer.

They are funded entirely through their own fundraising efforts and local charitable donations but have no financial support through local or national government grants.

All of FCWA’s work in supporting victims of domestic abuse is of necessity confidential as is the location of the ‘safe houses ‘ in the locality where shelter through temporary accommodation can be made available to urgent and extreme cases.

Among the range of services offered to individual needs is a Help Line for confidential advice and support.

HELP LINE NUMBER IS 01253 596699

Huge crowds at free wartime weekendFylde’s WW2 wartime weekend has been hailed a “tremendous success” after tens of thousands of people attended to watch attractions including battle re-enactments, a vintage vehicle parade, weapons displays and a static display of a genuine Spitfire.

The weekend’s activities were organised by Fylde Council for residents and visitors and saw a range of activities on Lytham’s Green and elsewhere in the town.

Activities included:

• two Western Front battles in Holland between the British and Germans;

• a living history encampment of British, American and German forces;

• a UK home front display about the lives of ordinary citizens in wartime;

• an entire field devoted to displays of the aircraft and stories of the individuals who fought in the Battle of Britain air war. The display included a Spitfire, a Merlin engine and parts of a Messerchmitt

• a display of weapons used by Allied and Axis troops;

• vintage stalls;

• 1940s entertainment from singers Katie Spitfire, George Formby soundalike Paul Casper, Heather Marie and big band singer Lilli De Carlo.

Councillor David Eaves, Fylde Council leader, said: “It was absolutely brilliant. The huge crowds meant it was hard to move on the Green between the windmill and the Clifton Arms.

“The town centre shops, cafes and restaurants were full of families enjoying themselves and that is good for

the economy, good for residents and good for the reputation of Fylde as tourist destination.

“It was the second weekend in a row that Fylde attracted tens of thousands of tourists. The Lytham Proms boasted Boyzone, Status Quo and

Katherine Jenkins and really put the area on the map as a place for novel and innovative entertainment.

“I am sure that carving such a niche in the market is the way ahead for the tourist economy in the area.

“Fylde has a soft spot for the veterans of the war. They will always be welcome here. Their numbers have been swelled in recent years by the younger generation who want to find out more about this honorable past.

“Both weekends have been extremely busy and the sea of happy faces I witnessed was a tribute to all the volunteers and staff who worked so hard to make it a success.”

Clear path to the future: Councillor Howard Henshaw, Fylde mayor, and Councillor Karen Henshaw, Fylde mayoress, meet young people and organisers at the Prince’s Trust presentation evening.

Congratulations were in order after 13 young people set themselves on the road to a bright future.

The Fylde 16- to 25-year-olds met Councillor Howard Henshaw, Fylde’s mayor, after completing the Prince’s Trust Team Programme at Wesham fire station.

A variety of activities over the 12-week course included improving a school garden, work experience in the “real world” and practical lessons in writing job applications and preparing for job interviews.

Councillor Henshaw, who met the 13 at the Trust’s presentation night at Ribby Hall Village, said: “The programme is a great start to a bright future for these people. Many have hidden talents that were uncovered in the 12 weeks.

“Everyone involved should be congratulated. Many past participants have become business leaders in their communities and I’m sure this latest programme will have produced more success stories for the future.”

A Horrible Day in the Dungeon! I’ve had a horrible day, shut in a dark room with strangers, shouted at, had blood and guts sprayed on me and finally been beheaded. That all went to plan then for the preview at Blackpools newest Dungeon attraction!

By 1 September, all eight of Merlins attractions will be open in Blackpool, including of course, the new Blackpool Dungeon which has been previewing this afternoon.

The guests were met for their afternoon of terror at the brand new entrance at the back corner of the building. It’s a living a breathing attraction and the starring ghouls, torturers and spirits marched along the precinct banging their drums and chanting their spells to the delight of the hoards who instantly gathered to watch. Chief Judge read out the edict proclaiming the attraction open, and asked the witches to lead the way!

Having your head chopped off by a stranger is an entertaining start to an afternoon, and it only got better, as a small group were led into the depths of the building, and into the darkness - to be greeted by the first in a line of weirdos with bad teeth! The black jester asked ‘Why does history keep repeating itself’ (answer, because no one listened the first time!) and he’s also got a natty line in songs and rhymes!

Bundled into a cage we began the descent to hell, and through a series of rooms, corridors and doors, being jumped at by dead bodies, narrowly missing the emptying of the jerry through a window, and various other cold draughts and insults. The route is through history and the plague, the marauding Vikings and Saxons, the Civil War and nearby Skippool Creek with a bit of local historical fact thrown in for good measure.

The nurse was particularly entertaining, although hopefully not available on the NHS! Pity the poor ‘volunteer’ strapped to the chair who had his buboes cured through removal of his insides. We felt his ills being cured with

leeches as they wiggled under our seats and his screams were curdling - so were ours when we were sprayed with his blood and guts!

The Witches of Pendle Hill is a piece of Lancashire history and this afternoon we met one of them - swinging by the neck, having been tried and found guilty. Apparently we’d all been condemned and went to the next room to meet our own fate.

Strapped to a bench we came face to face with the jury, were tried and condemned and the lever was pulled..... at which point we plunged to our end with much screaming!

The attraction is an hour and ten minutes or so, plus the time it takes you to navigate the horrors for sale in the Dungeon shop, is very well done and very high quality all round. I remember the Chamber of Horrors in the old Madame Tussauds in the 70’s and it’s very much not like that at all. The costumes and make-up are excellent and how do they make their teeth look so foul? Even on the first previews it was a slick production, where the only hiccups were a slightly stuck door and the Judges hat falling off in the middle of the trial! You’d really have thought that the actors had been doing it all their life instead of this being one of their first performances to strangers. A slight smell of fillers was the only thing that reminded you that this was all brand spanking new, and I quite like the smell of fillers anyway!

The Merlin way is to offer combination ticketing, with the slogan ‘The more you see, the more you save’. So if you want to come on holiday and go to several attractions over the course of a few days you will save more by buying the combination that suits you. An adult ticket to the Dungeon is £14.40 when bought alone, and you can save more with a ‘First to Scream’ offer if you buy tickets online before the 1 September, from www.thedungeons.com. The Dungeon is open from this Saturday (27 August). And get this, the manager is really called Gary Blackadder. How could you find a better job with a name like that!

Merlin aim to make memorable experiences with their attractions and that’s exactly what they have done in the Dungeon. ‘Have a horrible day.....’

Constantines Restaurante

Located in what has become Blackpool’s South Shore dining hotspot on Highfield Road, Constantine’s opened in 2008 and offers both Italian and British cuisine in a vibrant and warm atmosphere. The restaurant has a very Mediterranean feel inside with large exotic murals on the walls and contemporary furniture. It is split into two areas, a comfortable bar for pre-dinner drinks and a main dining area with room for 50 diners in all. The ethos here is value for money with all food freshly prepared on the premises using local suppliers where possible but at keen prices. Expect dishes such as sea bass, shoulder of lamb, pork loin and steaks all

cooked with fresh sauces and priced at around £10. They have a weekly changing specials board and an early bird menu from just £8.99 for 2 courses and a drink. Parties of up to 50 people can hire out the restaurant and plenty of on-street parking is always free. Constantine’s is open Monday to Saturday, 5-10pm and Sunday, 3-8pm.

Cocklers given green light for St AnnesCommercial cocklers will return to the St Annes foreshore between 1 September and the end of March.

Cockling was banned in the 1990s to give mollusc stocks time to recover – but licences will again be issued from next month by the Inshore Fisheries and Conservation Authority (IFCA).

Tests have shown that the cockles will soon be big enough to be harvested.

Permits can only be granted by the IFCA, but Fylde Council plans to issue Beach Access Permits to manage access to the beach by channelling cocklers through the Fairhaven Road car park. Cocklers will have to pay charges to use the car park for the vehicles that will carry the cockles to market.

The rich cockle beds are concentrated between the pier and Granny’s Bay. The cockling gangs will have access to the beach restricted to the Fairhaven Road car park to minimise disruption to local residents and other beach users.

Councillor Tommy Threlfall, Fylde Council cabinet member for Environment and Partnerships, said: “Cocklers need a permit from the council to cross the beach and also to use the Fairhaven Road car park to take the cockles to market.

“We need to at least cover our costs as our staff – and staff from IFCA - will have to monitor their activities.

Any cocklers found to be in breach of their permits, or taking undersized cockles, will face enforcement action.

“It is vital to ensure that residents and other beach users aren’t inconvenienced, so we are restricting access through a single place.

“This is a traditional activity with a long history but it is controlled so that only cockles above 19mm can be harvested.”

More than 50 potential cocklers have already been in touch to inquire about access to the beach.

Tests so far have shown that many of the foreshore’s cockles are just below 19mm – leading council staff to expect that the busiest time will come after September when the cockles have grown more.

Councillor Threlfall added: “Cockling is mainly done by rakes so there should be minimal, if any, noise nuisance although there is likely to be vehicle movement associated with the activity.

“We don’t know how many cocklers will turn up and we can’t ration access. What we can do is ensure orderly access to and from the beach and manage the activity on the beach. The lorries themselves won’t be able to get on the beach so there shouldn’t be any mud on the nearby roads.

“The cockles are only suitable for human consumption after ultra-heat treatment or been through a specialist purification plant. So that they are processed correctly, the council will issue movement permits to ensure they are taken to the correct treatment facilities.”

Compost giveaway for residents

Following the introduction of food waste collections, Fylde Borough Council are saying a big thank you to the residents of Fylde, who regularly recycle their garden and food waste, by giving away 6 tonnes of compost made from the items collected in the green wheeled bin.

Residents are invited to come along to collect their free compost on Wednesday 17th August 2011 at St Pauls Avenue Car Park, Fairhaven Lake, Lytham St Annes, the event starts at 10am until stocks last. The compost will be available on a first come first served basis, please remember to bring along your own bags to collect the compost, which will be limited to 2 bags per person.

Councillor Pounder, Portfolio Holder for Customer and Operational Services said ‘Fylde’s residents are doing an excellent job of recycling their garden and food waste by placing it inside their green wheeled bin; this has helped us achieve our impressive recycling rates. Residents can come along to the event to claim their free compost and receive some top tips on how to help the environment further by recycling and composting even more at home.’ But that’s not all – compost bins are also available for all householders in Lancashire at a cost of £15.00 per bin. Composting at home is one of the best

ews ways to help the environment. If garden and food waste

is buried in a landfill site it produces methane, a powerful greenhouse gas. You can find out how to order your own compost bin at these events and get some great advice on how to get started.

The compost is being supplied by Global Renewables Ltd who operate 2 waste processing facilities on behalf of Lancashire County Council and Blackpool Council and process up to 55,000 tonnes of garden and food waste per year, as part of the Lancashire Waste Partnership. The green waste compost produced has been PAS 100 & CQP Certified by the Association for Organics Recycling, AFOR. The specification was prepared and published by the British Standards Institution (BSI) and built on the existing AFOR ‘Standards for Compost’ scheme. Using this kind of compost is the next best thing to making your own at home and it offers a double bonus for the environment. It saves buying peat-based composts which are collected from delicate natural environments.

For the last 9 years Lancashire has been amongst the most active areas in the UK for home composting with over 170,000 compost bins given to residents through the Lancashire Home Composting project. This has helped Lancashire reduce the amount of rubbish we send to landfill by over 100,000 tonnes a year. By home composting, each household can reduce the amount of rubbish sent to landfill, on average, by 220 kilograms per year.

The compost bin orderline number is 0844 571 4444Alternatively, to order a compost bin and for more information about home composting please visit the website at www.lancashire.getcomposting.com

CAROUSEL OF CANDY FLOSS, POPCORN AND DOUGHNUTS AT TWELVE’S HOTSHOT EVENING

CULINARY ringmaster Graham Floyd brought all the fun of the fair to Twelve Restaurant & Lounge Bar for Lancashire and Blackpool Tourist Board’s Lancashire Hotshots evening!

Among the highlights of a delicious three-course menu was a dazzling quartet of fairground attraction desserts as well as masala popcorn and honeycomb lollypop!

Graham, Sous Chef at the Michelin Bib Gourmand and Taste Lancashire Highest Quality Assured restaurant, took over the kitchen as part of the tourist board’s prestigious young chef initiative which provides them with the opportunity to take over the running of their restaurant for one night.

Graham, has been working at Twelve for the last four years and trained at Blackpool & The Fylde College. Along with his parents and younger sister, he was part of a travelling circus until the age of 10 and drew on his childhood experiences to create a circus inspired menu!

Photographs and newspaper cuttings of his life in the circus were featured on the restaurant’s wall projector and there was also circus style music as diners took their ring side seats.

Paul Moss, Chef Proprietor of Twelve Restaurant & Lounge Bar, paid tribute to Graham’s leadership in the kitchen.

He said: “Graham has performed excellently this evening. He clearly demonstrated he’s got the skills and talent to juggle the demands of a busy kitchen. At Twelve we are a firm supporter of nurturing new talent in the industry and we were very pleased to be involved with the tourist board’s young chef initiative.”

Diners were given feedback forms to express their views about the evening, but initial reactions were overwhelmingly positive on the quality of the food and the variety of the menu with special praise for the fairground attraction desserts.

Graham was presented with a certificate of recognition by Tony Openshaw, Director of Marketing at Lancashire and Blackpool Tourist Board who said the evening had been a great success. He said: “Everyone enjoyed a great evening at Twelve! The food that Graham and his team served was delicious and the circus theme was an excel-lent idea. It is clear that standards in the Lancashire Hotshots initiative continue to grow demonstrating the great talent we have here in Lancashire.”

needed money.

Peel2Save cards are credit-card sized –

so they fit neatly into a purse or wallet.

They contain 64 individual peel off coupons

each one promoting a great local business.

In total the offers are typically worth well

over £300 – and all the offers are local

to you.

You sell the cards for £10 each and

get to keep £5 from every card sold.

Because the cards offer such great value –

and all the businesses featured are local to

you (each card is built and pulled together

by our local co-ordinator in your area) many

organisations are selling hundreds of cards

in only 2-3 weeks – which means very

significant funds are raised very quickly.

The consumer wins, you win and

local businesses benefit too. It’s a total

community effort where everybody gains.

Cash Tills Jingle As Golfers Descend On FyldeGolfers from as far afield as Northern Ireland, Scotland and Sussex were in Fylde last week to take part in the annual William Rainford Golf Competition.

Winners in the Fylde Council-backed tournament were Chris and Elaine Hancock, from Spalding, Lincolnshire. The duo scored 153 points and narrowly beat runners-up Bryan and Sandra Calam from near Hull.

The contest takes place over the week at Royal Lytham Golf Club, Fairhaven Golf Club, Lytham Green Drive, and St Annes Old Links Golf Club in a bid to promote Fylde’s premier golf links – and to give amateurs the chance to walk the hallowed greens.

Councillor Sue Fazackerley, Fylde Council cabinet member for Leisure and Culture, said: “This is a very popular way of promoting the area’s visitor economy.

“We have some of the best links in the country and people don’t need asking twice to come and play here. Indeed, we already have 50 couples on the waiting list to come and play next year.

“We estimate that the tournament attracted between £90-100,000 of expenditure for restaurants, hotels and shops – and that directly keeps people in work.

“There was a very high standard of entrants this year and it was a truly gripping spectacle in the last few days.

“Even so, it is essentially a fun competition – people were really keen to play on the Royal Lytham Golf Club as it will be home to next year’s international Golf Open.”

The rules of the competition require that teams must be couples and that they are members of golf clubs.

Winners Chris and Elaine were presented with their trophy and prize of golfing equipment at a presentation by Councillors Howard and Karen Henshaw, Fylde mayor and mayoress, Councillor Sue Fazackerley and Councillor David Eaves, Fylde Council leader.
