businesses, small and large, is priceless. As the value of our membership is enhanced, our organization is strengthened by the participation in our programs, committees and events. From the numerous networking opportunities, to advocacy on important business issues, the Chamber appeals to every facet of the business community.
By now you know our president, Scott Harper, has accepted a job to go back to work with the YMCA. We all wish Scott well in his new endeavors. At the November executive board meeting a slate of members were appointed to help with the search of our new president. We have already received several letters of interest and resumes of very qualified individuals. Our goal is to have Scott’s replacement hired by March 2016.
Finally, each day, the Chamber strengthens, promotes and serves its member businesses through our numerous programs and events. We advocate on the local, state and federal level, and offer diverse programs for both large and small and minority business owners.
Again, let me say thank you for the opportunity to serve. I look forward to seeing all of you at the many Chamber functions, but especially at Chairman’s Ball Jan. 16, where we will honor Dr. Don Stockton for his tremendous work at the helm of this organization.
May God Bless the citizens of Montgomery County and May God Bless our Chamber.
Sincerely,Hector Forestier, City of Willis ManagerChairman of the Board

Next Generation Leadership Personal Development SessionBy Candice Dolley
“Lead through your strengths or other ways that add more value to you or the community.” That is the phrase that Dr. Kozhi Sidney Makai would use to sum up our December Next Generation Leadership Meeting on Personal Development. Dr. Makai is a multi-hyphenate being an author, poet, educator, social researcher, speaker, life strategist, advisor, business entrepreneur, trainer and social entrepreneur whose central purpose is to help individuals and organizations by building on their strengths.
One key point that Dr. Makai mentioned in his presentation is that as leaders we need to read. It does not matter what you read as long as you read for about an hour a day to increase your knowledge and vocabulary. He notes that will allow you to increase your knowledge about current events going on in our world. A second point Dr. Makai mentioned was that to be a good leader you need to make sure you take the time to listen to what
other people are saying. Do not change the story that they are telling to make it about you. There’s a difference between hearing and actually listening. Serving other people and your community is another important part of being a leader. You never want to make leadership about yourself, but rather about helping other people by leading them through their strengths. Building a relationship is a very important part of leadership because you have to get to know who you are leading.
I learned a lot from Dr. Makai and what he had to say. I will definitely be taking in everything that he taught us since he has accomplished a lot including finishing his bachelors, masters, and his Ph.D. in just five and a half years! Having Dr. Makai come and talk to us at our meeting was definitely a highlight of this program. It truly shows that no matter where you come from, you can have a major impact on the world by being a leader.
The Next Generation Leadership program is a partnership of The Conroe/Lake Conroe Chamber of Commerce and Education for Tomorrow Alliance. The program provides promising 12th grade students with the opportunity to learn about leadership at work in Montgomery County and to cultivate individual leadership skills through interaction with professionals in business, education, and government. To learn more about Next Generation Leadership or to sponsor a student session lunch, please contact Monica at 936.273.7087.
The Leadership Montgomery County (LMC) Class of 2016, along with LMC alumni, enjoyed a day hearing the latest updates in national, state and local government at the recent LMC Government Session.
The session, held at the Conroe Tower, was directed by Steve Williams, assistant city administrator
and chief financial officer for the City of Conroe. Each year, LMC alumni are invited to the Government Session to meet the class, visit with other alumni and hear updates from their government officials.
Conroe Mayor Webb Melder welcomed everyone to the session over breakfast sponsored by Glen Bernstein and Vic’s Precision Automotive.
To start the day, the class and alumni heard from U.S. Congressman Kevin Brady
via video from Washington, D.C. The class then had a question and answer session with Congressman Brady’s District Director Todd Stephens. Class members and alumni then visited Commissioner’s Court to hear a presentation from County Judge Craig Doyal and Precinct 1 Commissioner Mike Meador.
Senator Robert Nichols and State Representatives Mark Keough, Cecil Bell and Will Metcalf gave the class and alumni a look into government at the state level. After lunch sponsored by Houston Methodist The Woodlands Hospital, the class heard from municipal government leaders including Paul Virgadamo, city administrator for the City of Conroe; Greg Smith, city administrator for the City of Shenandoah; Jack Yates, city administrator for the City of Montgomery; and Nick Wolda, director of community relations for The Woodlands Township.
The class then traveled to the Montgomery County Courthouse for presentations by 435th District Court Judge Mike Seiler, County Court at Law 2 Judge Claudia Laird, County Attorney J D Lambright, and
Precinct 2 Justice of the Peace Trey Spikes. The day ended with the LMC Leadership Series, facilitated by Chad Patterson and LMC alumni.
Leadership Montgomery County (LMC) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, dedicated cultivating the future leaders of Montgomery County. The mission of LMC is to prepare emerging and existing leaders to understand local issues, grow their leadership skills and connect with others to better serve Montgomery County.
The Conroe/Lake Conroe Chamber of Commerce, The Woodlands Area Chamber of Commerce, the Greater Magnolia Chamber of Commerce, the Community Chamber of East Montgomery County, the Montgomery County Hispanic Chamber, and the Magnolia Parkway Chamber of Commerce are all partner Chambers in the LMC program. Participants are chosen by application process in June of each year.

The Conroe/Lake Conroe Chamber of Commerce’s Annual Chairman’s Ball Jan. 16 honors the 2015 Chairman of the Board, Dr. Don Stockton. The event is held at La Toretta Lake Resort & Spa with dinner, dancing and a casino. The event is sold out.
The evening starts at 6 p.m. with cocktails and then dinner at 7 p.m. A short presentation follows dinner and then guests can enjoy live music by the Drywater Band or play at the Post Oak Bank Casino. At Chairman’s Ball guests help celebrate Stockton’s year of excellence and his service and dedication to the Chamber over the past year. Stockton was appointed Superintendent of Schools in August of 2003. He has 32 years of experience in education, serving 30 of those years in Conroe ISD. Prior to being named superintendent, Stockton served as interim superintendent; assistant superintendent; principal of The Woodlands High School, McCullough Junior High School and Knox Junior High School; and assistant principal at Oak Ridge High School, McCullough Junior High School and Knox Junior High School. We are looking forward to another prosperous year ahead.”

Educational Outcomes is a nonprofit organization dedicated addressing depressed social conditions within disadvantaged populations in Montgomery County, Texas. We concentrate on positive community building projects in cooperation, when feasible and possible, with government and local civic organizations. Focus is given to mitigation of poverty through educational empowerment.
WHO WE AREIn 2015, a group of like-minded individuals followed through with an idea that had been germinating amongst them for close to a decade. We feel that education is the cornerstone of a balanced and fulfilled life. It is, we believe, one of the most pressing issues of the 21st century. When the lack of educational opportunities is combined with the injuries of hunger and poverty a person becomes disengaged from normal growth processes and faces high risks of negative life outcomes.
The lack of positive economic engagement, in many cases, places burdens on the already strained religious, governmental, and private social

Through partnership with other, like-minded, organizations, such as the Literacy Volunteers of America: Montgomery County and the Conroe Area Optimist Club, we are seeking continuing funding to establish a Community Education Center; one that is expected to become the locus where learners can access quality English as a Second Language courses (ESL), Adult Basic Education classes (ABE), and job skills training free of charge.
