I’m not planning on hunting him down but I would like to meet him

many years living in Las Vegas performing as Rod Stewart and sharing the stage with Elvis, Cher, Tom Jones and Neil Diamond impersonators in the Imperial Palace’s highly successful, long-running ‘Legends in Concert’ show.

Dave is currently on tour in NSW and on February 8 will be bringing his spectacular two-hour live show, ‘Forever Rod’, to the EVAN Theatre, Penrith Panthers.

Dave said he’ll be performing all of Stewart’s biggest hits including material from the hugely successful ‘The Great American Songbook’ collection.

“Rod won multiple Grammys for his ‘American Songbook’ catalogue, so I can’t ignore them in the show but we mostly stick

to the old classics that he released during the 70’s, 80’s and 90’s.

“The three most popular songs on tour are always ‘Maggie May’, ‘Do Ya Think I’m Sexy’ and in Australia, ‘Sailing’ is also very popular.”

I t was 2002 and the world was in the midst of the ‘War on Terror’. One place that was the prime target for Coalition forces was Afghanistan – the very same place

Canadian-born Rod Stewart tribute artist, Dave Battah, decided to tour his internationally renowned show.

“Performing in Kandahar, Afghanistan, was one of the highlights of my career in 2002,” Dave told FYI.

“All through the 90’s I did the military entertainment tours throughout Egypt, Israel, Cyprus, Bosnia and the North Pole, entertaining troops from all over the world. I always feel very proud to be able to bring peace and relaxation to these troops.”

Dave said he rarely feels nervous performing in some of the world’s most dangerous and volatile places.

“I’ve never been nervous doing any of these military shows,” he said.

“First off we have military escorts and we fl y over in military aircraft. I’ve never been frightened because I’ve always loved that type of thing.”

Dave got his start playing the man known as ‘Rockin’ Rod’ more than 20 years ago after performing one of Stewart’s songs in a cover band.

“I wasn’t a Rod Stewart fan to begin with but after performing one his songs one day on stage my agent said, ‘You should do a tribute’,” Dave recalled.

“So lucratively I decided to put a Rod Stewart tribute show together and from there I became a fan.”

The British-born Rod Stewart is one of the most popular artists of all time, selling in excess of 100 million records worldwide.

One thing that makes the ladies (and some men) swoon is Stewart’s uniquely raspy voice – which is probably the most challenging element for impersonator Dave to replicate.

“I spent most of my career... copying other people’s voices. Whenever I performed a cover [song] I’d always like to try and do the voice of the artist who was singing it,” he said.

“With Rod Stewart, he has a deceivingly high voice and with a rasp on there. Even with the show together I was still perfecting it and it took me a couple of years to get it right.”

Dave said even to this day he is developing Stewart’s voice.

“It’s pretty well-developed but I sometimes hear him do new things when I revisit some of the songs and I’m conscious of it,” he said.

“It’s always going to be a work in progress but I’d say it’s mostly developed now considering I’ve been doing it all over the world since 1990.”

But what does the man himself think of it all? By chance, Dave met Rod Stewart’s band when they were visiting Toronto for a concert at the Skydome. They were so amazed by his likeness to Stewart that they invited him backstage.

“We were in the same room before the show and his band said Rod wanted to meet me,” Dave recounted.

“I was watching him across the room when all of a sudden the stage manager came in and dragged everyone on stage. However, the band came up to me and said, ‘he was fl attered at what you do’. I’m not planning on hunting him down or anything but I would like to meet him one day.”

On stage, as the name suggests there will be 10 saxophonists who will all perform together at the same time.

The famous saxophone was invented by Adolphe Sax in 1842 and was unlike any other instrument before it because of

its conical shaped body that amplifi ed the volume of its sound.

These 10 extraordinary musicians can play anything from the Blues Brothers, to Bach, from inspiring movie themes such as ‘Rocky’ to the playful tune of ‘The Simpsons’.

In their performance at the Evan Theatre, they will be playing hits such as ‘Tequila’, the theme from ‘Peter Gunn’, ‘Just the way you are’, ‘I still call Australia home’ and ‘Rock around the clock’ just to name a few more!

After hearing these songs in wonderful new arrangements tailored to the different saxophones being played, you will have a new appreciation of this incredible instrument and these talented performers.

J udd Apatow, the producer of comedies such as ‘40-Year-Old-Virgin’ and ‘Funny People’ yet again hits the funny bone with the

hilarious comedy ‘This is 40’. Featuring an all star cast including

funny man Paul Rudd, the exceptionally humorous Leslie Mann, the hysterical Melissa McCarthy and Megan Fox, you won’t be able to contain your laughter.

The comedy expands upon the story of Pete (Rudd) and Debbie (Mann), supporting characters from the blockbuster hit ‘Knocked Up’, as we see fi rst-hand how they are dealing with the challenges of life. The family is sure to enjoy this animated comedy that guarantees laughter and frights all the way through.

anniversary, featuring three CDs worth of music from the band, including the re-mastered edition of the album, live performances from the 1977 tour and previously unreleased vault recordings.

W hen you’ve made wine in the USA, France and Italy as well as Australia, and you have a Jimmy Watson Trophy under your belt

as well, it’s really saying something when you describe fruit from a particular vineyard as “the kind of thing winemakers dream of”.

And that’s how the McLaren Vale’s Serafi no Wines’ chief winemaker, Charles Wish, sums up fruit from the company’s Sharktooth Block vineyard that goes into its fl agship Sharktooth Shiraz.

“When I joined Serafi no in 2009 I was blown away by the exceptional fruit off that block,” Charles said.

“It defi nitely was the kind we winemakers dream of.”

For Shiraz buffs, Charles’ Serafi no 2009 Sharktooth Shiraz really is quite outstanding – it is deep purple in colour and with a palate that’s full-bodied, rich and intense with

wonderful dark berry fruit fl avours.While not cheap at $70, it’s certainly

more than rewarding for that special occasion, teamed with a good fl ame-grilled fi llet of beef or simply on its own.

One for lunch: We’ve long been fans of the consistently excellent Richland label Pinot Grigio crafted by Bill Calabria at his Westend Estate at Griffi th in the NSW Riverina. And his latest from the 2012 vintage lives up to what we’ve come to expect from its predecessors.

The product of Bill’s excellent fruit and his winemaking expertise, this is a drop that’s quite pungent with ripe pear and lemon aromas, and has a palate that’s richly full-bodied with crispy apple, lychee and spice fruit fl avours. It’s excellent value at just $10.95 to enjoy with a range of foods from traditional Italian antipasto platters, to Asian Pad Thai and noodle dishes.

bar to explore. The fresh prawns are simply divine, as are the mussels and squid. And help yourself to one of the many green salads that look delicious and have a crisp, clean fl avour, which balances out the other dishes.

Whilst it is tempting to go back for second and third servings of the main meals – and many people do – I suggest you leave enough room for dessert, because Star Buffet has excelled in offering a delectable range of sweets, cakes, slices, fresh fruit and to top it off, their very own mouth-watering fondue fountain.

I can’t go passed the ingenious chocolate mousse and marshmallow dessert served in a shot glass or the creme brulee.

T he State Theatre is alive, with the Sound of Music. Based on one of the most successful movie musicals of all time, a sing-along version of 1965 fi lm

is about to take Sydney by storm. In a stage show that has proved to be

none other than a tremendous success, the Sing-A-Long A Sound of Music will be returning to the State Theatre for three performances only.

Enjoy the original fi lm in all its classic grandeur back on the big screen but this time, don’t feel guilty about belting out those classics like ‘Do-Re-Mi’, ‘My favourite things’ and ‘Edelweiss’.

Year after year, an incredible spirit fi lls the theatre, as fans cheer for the fl awless and legendary Julie Andrews, wolf-whistle the gorgeous Christopher Plummer, hiss at the Baroness and boo the Nazis!

Be there for the ultimate memorable moment when Fraulein Maria and the Captain fi nally kiss.

But “let’s start at the very beginning, a very good place to start”. Watch the oroginal Sound of Music fi lm on the big screen at the State Theatre and dress up as your favourite characters.

For those who don’t know the lyrics off by heart to this classic there are subtitles to encourage everyone to join in the singing.

The sceenings will be hosted by ‘South Pacifi c’ Marika Aubrey who will be there to guide you in a pre-vocal warm up and sensational costume parade that is guaranteed to thrill those Sound of Music diehards. Feel free to dress up as girls in white dress with blue satin sashes, a gaggle of nuns, goats and goat herders or even the Alps themselves!

The-Sing-A-Long version of this family favourite has already played in over 12 countries, sold a whopping 1.5 million tickets and staged over 3,000 performances worldwide.

screening including lyrics is being shown at the State Theatre in Sydney on Friday, February 22 through to the Sunday, February 24.

There was a swag of winners from this week’s Golden Globe Awards, which includes winners for television as well as movies. Some of the major television winners included ‘Homeland’ which picked up Best Drama Series, Best Drama Actor (Damien Lewis) and Best Drama Actress (Claire Danes); ‘Game Change’ which took home Golden Globes for Best TV Movie or Mini-Series as well as Best Actress (Julianne Moore) and Best Supporting Actor (Ed Harris); and lastly the Foxtel show ‘Girls’ surprisingly won Best Comedy Series and Best Comedy Actress (Lena Dunham).

Some big news broke this week over at ‘Today Tonight’ with ex-Channel Ten news

presenter Helen Kapalos named as host of the controversial Channel Seven program. Kapalos replaces the likeable Matt White and hopes the new ‘Today Tonight’ will feature more hard-hitting stories. However, it’s not quite known just how much say Kapalos will have on the stories that get produced. One thing that could really hurt the ‘TT’ brand is if it goes too serious with an overkill of political and international news. If people want that then they usually tune in to the ABC or SBS. Don’t be surprised if we do see a change but then a back fl ip if ratings dwindle.

Lovers of Ellen DeGeneres received awesome news last week with the announcement that the talk-show queen will be heading to Sydney to fi lm segments for her top-rating show. Ellen went all ‘Oprah-style’ in her announcement that saw 400 audience members receive a seven night trip to Australia as well. No details have been released as yet regarding her fi lming schedule and whether she will produce any full episodes here but I’ll let you know when they do.

Children’s TV show host, Shura Taft, has been named as the new host of popular Channel Seven series, ‘The Mole’. Taft replaces Tom Williams and Grant Bowler, who hosted previous versions of the show in the last decade. ‘The Mole: Culture Clash’ will begin fi lming soon, with the series to air later in the year.

Despite speculation it was going to end, long-running series ‘Bones’ has been

renewed for a ninth season. “After more than 150 episodes, ‘Bones’ continues to be one of television’s most dynamic and consistent dramas,” FOX entertainment chairman, Kevin Reilly said.

Plenty of shows are coming back over the next few weeks including ‘Home and Away’ which returns this Monday, January 21 at 7pm. Fresh episodes of ‘Glee’ are also back on Ten, starting off with a double-episode from Wednesday, January 30. And after all the promos ‘The Block: All-Stars’ will fi nally go to air Monday, February 4 at 7pm on Nine.

Lastly, very exciting news for comic book fans with Joss Whedon’s ‘S.H.I.E.L.D.’ pilot likely to receive a series pick-up. ‘S.H.I.E.L.D.’ is a loose spin-off from the movie blockbuster ‘The Avengers’ that Whedon directed and will also see Clark Gregg reprise his role as Agent Phil Coulson. ‘S.H.I.E.L.D’. is a fi ctional espionage and law-enforcement agency in the Marvel Comics Universe, which has been featured throughout many Marvel fi lms including ‘The Avengers’, ‘Thor’ and ‘Iron Man’. The new show has been described as “intense, epic, funny and silly”. If picked up, the show will air later this year.
