Poetry: David Partch

Poet’s Dilemmathere, where Granite Rocks in the Rivergently break its flow.you can tell they’re thereby the turbulence –the series of bumps and dipsfrothing excitedly.and excitedlyi want to give them all a name, each and every oneits own name.but the Water laughsand races on –splashing in my facefor spite …

and with its own languagethe River cycles on –leaving my stony words behind …

as i wipe my mouthand try bravely to start again –that unavoidable task:of capturingwhat cannot be captured …and, turning to my audience,i stare into the frozen faceswith a sudden silence.

Pacificbrown Pelican shadowskims alongthe Water’s salty edge …

no needfor deep thoughttoday.

Our Only Taskthe Red-winged Blackbirdsare especially chatty today …but i still don’t assumethey have any secrets.

the universeis designed to take care of itself.our only taskis to survive.

getting confusedabout thisgenerally leadsto problems.

Here and Nowwe searchamongst our broken dreamsfor a faithbeyond the difficulty.and we hopein the crotch of necessityto discoverthe Seedling of tomorrow …as we reach backinto the Earthfor the dustwhere community lingers.and we find ourselvesin the otherswho are there to help …

as we stake outour placeand plant ourselveswith passionin our togetherness –right here, right now.

No Mountains to Movesitting in the morning Sun,i breath in deeply, try to exhale – with intention …dispelling all demonsand doing thiswith a deliberate distastefor foresight and concern.

let the demons go.let them flutter away.

yearning to be a Wood Rat, perhaps,or a Bewick’s Wren –with nothing better than to gaze about –not even a next meal on my mind –certainly not a nextlife, nor even a tomorrowto fret about.

not caring about anythingappears, at this moment,to be the most careful thing i can do …no ambitionsto ruin an otherwise peaceful day,no Mountains to move –just soak up the Sun,its generous warmth.let the world be what it is.

it’s not my fault!

i can do no morethan to be what i am,

and, if i do that right,at the end of the dayi can watch the Sun set, breathe in deeplyand wait for the warmth to return.

David Partch spends his retirement in Willits with poetry, music, theatre, philosophy, gardening, and modeling his wife Ursula’s fiber artwork. His book of poems is titled The Hard and the Soft of It. For more information, see TheSighting.com.
