17. J. Foord. DECORATIVE FLOWER STUDIES. FOR THE USE OF ARTISTS, DESIGNERS, STUDENTS, AND OTHERS. A SERIES OF FORTY COLOURED PLATES PRINTED IN FACSIMILE OF THE ORIGINAL DRAWINGS, ACCCOMPANED BY STUDIES OF DETAIL FROM EACH SUBJECT, AND DESCRIPTIVE NOTES. 1901, London, B. T. Batsford, folio, pp40, colour and black and white illustrations, green decorative cloth. Jeannie Foord was a Glasgow born artist and produced these Arts and Crafts designs as practical working studies for designers and artists, deliberately choosing irregular or imperfect examples of the flowers for decorative reasons. The assymetry of the designs reflects the taste of the Art Nouveau period. The plates were printed in colour using the Pochoir process, a form of stencilling, where each colour is applied in a separate process. The result is a rather subtle, delicate colour rather reminiscent of the Japanese woodblock prints that were very popular at that time. The binding is rubbed and worn and has bubbling on the lower cover, the half title is loose and has a faint ink stamp "London County Council" which is also on the title page, but nowhere else in the book. One plate has a slight tear only affecting the margin, and there are some fingermarks in the margins throughout. In general the plates are in very good condition. £500.00

VIEW OF SIENA.

19. [Anonymous engraver from a drawing by Teofilo Gallaccini]. ABSCONDI NON POTEST CIVITAS SVPRA MONTEM POSITA. Delineabat D. TG. Breve totius Historiae Senarum Argumentum / Orlando Malavolta Auctore...Originally 1599, but probably a late eighteenth or early nineteenth century reprint from the original plate. In 1574 Orlando Malavolti published a work by the title Historia de’ fatti e guerre de li Sanesi (A History of the Facts and Wars of the Sienese) for the publisher Luca Bonetti in Siena. The volume was the first part of a project covering the history of the city from its origins to the conquest by the Medici. The work also included a view of the city from the north, author unknown, showing the urban layout prior to the modifications carried out by the Granducato from 1560. Malavolti, a geographer and an expert in map projection, was probably also responsible for the illustrations, but died before he could bring the whole project to completion. The second and third parts of the series (Historia del sig. Orlando Malavolti De’ fatti, e Guerre de’ Sanesi..., in Venetia, per Salvestro Marchetti libraro in Siena all’insegna della Lupa) were edited by his sons Ubaldino and Bernardo and published in 1599, three years after Orlando’s death. This view was designed to accompany this edition: although it clearly echoes the view of the city in the first volume in its general structure, the new map projection appears considerably updated and more richly detailed. Another main difference is also the addition of an architectural frame around the scene. The engraving bears a reference to the author of the drawing, signed with the initials “D. TG”.This monogram was used by Teofilo Gallaccini (Siena 1564-1641), a versatile, erudite writer of essays, a medical doctor and an expert in architecture and antiquities. Image size 410mm x 305mm, good margins but some short tears not affecting the image.

and the name of a passenger. It is known that the ship carried passengers to religious outposts in Manila. No more entries after Monday 31st August 1846. £2500.00The commercial rise of Cadiz during the reign of Isabella II attracted businessmen from Spain and abroad, who revitalized the commercial life of the city which had been badly damaged by the economic sanctions imposed by England, the French occupation and the loss of colonial possessions. The liberalization of overseas commerce and, in particular the dissolution of the RoyalPhilippines Company, meant an opportunity to start trading between Spain and the West Indies.

Ignacio Fernandez de Castro was born in Comillas, a small town in Cantabria, Northern Spain, in 1793, son of Simon Fernandez del Castro, businessman, and Manuela Gutierrez del Castro. He was the youngest of their eight children - M. Manuela, M. Angela, ManuelAntonio, Jose Joaquin, Agustina Manuela, Tomas, Manuel e Ignacio. His business career began in the Merchant Navy after his education, and with the financial help of his parents he reached the rank of Captain. He made many journeys to America, specifically New Spain, to trade with the Philipines, using ships from Manila, and occasionally stopping at Acapulco. On one of these many voyages he met Concepcion de Bustamante y Padilla, daughter of Ignacio Bustamante and M. Antonia Padilla. The family was from the town of Arispe, in the province of Sonora, Mexico. In 1818, Ignacio y Concepcion were married in the town of Piti, in the same province. They had eleven children: Carmen, Guadalupe, Rafael, Josefa, Andres Ignacio, Luisa, Concepcion, Gregorio, Natalia, Jose Domingo y M.Antonia, but only seven survived. Dedicated to trade between Asia, New Spain and Manila, they were forced to settle in Cadiz, when Mexico found its independence, and established a prosperous trading business there.
