    This English project is designed to test your sons knowledge of the following criteria whichhave been covered as part of the Reading Street text book content:

    Enhancing and nurturing the reading of English. To identify the authors purpose. To know how to compare and contrast. Using his comprehension and creative writing skills to write a summary.

    Please be aware that this project is a cross curricular activity with Science (The Animal Kingdomspecifically, Bears).

    The text about the three Bears, namely the Polar Bear, the Asiatic Black Bear and the GiantPanda, must be read by your son thoroughly, to enable him to complete the worksheets thatfollow it.

    In the first part of the worksheet your son will be identifying the Authors Purpose and have to

    Compare and Contrast through doing a Word Map.The second part of the worksheet is that he must write a summary consisting of 20 sentencesabout one of the three bears mentioned above.

    The completed Worksheets should be handed in to your teacher on or before Wednesday 25 th May.

    Please ensure your full name and grades are clearly written on all papers you hand to yourteacher.

    The Polar Bear

    The Polar Bear is in a lot of trouble because of global warming. If the temperature of the earthgoes up, the sea ice that the polar bear lives on will melt.

    Body length: 2-2.5mWeight: Male: 300-800kg / Female: 150-300kg

    The Polar Bear lives in the North Pole and other ice-covered oceans.

    The Polar Bear's favorite dish is seal. The Polar Bear often catches them from the ice. Other thanseal, it also eats walrus, beluga, fish, birds, and many other small animals.

    The Polar Bear has a giant body and it is very strong. In the North Pole there are almost noanimals that can win in a fight against the Polar Bear. It is an animal without enemies in theNorth Pole.

    Global warming is the Polar Bear's enemy.Do you understand the word "global warming"? Global warming happens when the Earth'stemperature goes up. The Polar Bear is in trouble because of global warming, and as the Earth'stemperature increases, the sea ice in which the Polar Bear lives on will melt.

    The ice melts and it can't find any food...The Polar Bear lives by catching seals and other animals from on top of the sea ice. Now, the

    ocean doesn't freeze as much as before so the Polar Bear can't find food and its numbers arestarting to become smaller. Global warming is not easy to stop, but we must cut down ongarbage production and practice energy conservation.

    The Asiatic Black Bear

    The Asiatic Black Bear lives in many countries in Asia. You can tell them by the crescent moonpattern on their chests. They are in danger of extinction now because the forests where they liveare being cut down and because they are used in medicine.

    The Asiatic Black Bear lives in many countries across Asia from Iran to Japan.

    The Asiatic Black Bear mainly eats nuts and fruit. It sometimes eats animals and insects as well.

    Compared to other bears, the Asiatic Black Bear is small and does not often attack other animals.It is not as scary as you might think at first.

    Coming down from the mountains in search of foodThe Asiatic Black Bear lives across Asia. You can tell them by the white mark on their chest,which is shaped like a crescent moon. One of the reasons why the number of Asiatic Black Bearsis decreasing is because forests are being cut down. They mainly eat nuts and fruit, so if theforests where their food comes from disappear, they will not be able to find food and may dieout. Many Asiatic Black Bears hang around villages when they are hungry and unfortunatelyhave to be killed. This is pushing them even closer towards extinction.

    Many bears are sacrificed for medicineThe gall bladders (one of the internal organs) of Asiatic Black Bears have long been sold as anexpensive medicine. One of the factors driving the bears towards extinction is overhunting fortheir use in medicine. The pain that bears feel when medicine is made is also a problem. The

    bears are kept in cages where they cannot move, a pipe is put into their gall bladders and a fluidis removed for use in medicine. The process is very cruel.

    The Giant Panda

    The Giant Panda is a superstar in the animal kingdom. The forests where pandas live arebecoming smaller and smaller, and they may not be able to find mates or food anymore...

    They only live in the forests of China.

    The Giant Pandas' favorite food is bamboo. Sometimes they also eat small animals and insects,as well as fruits.

    Giant Pandas are part of the bear family. When awake, they are almost always eating bamboo.They just love to eat!

    Farms and houses are being built, and the forests are in troubleIn China, the Giant Pandas' home, the number of people is growing. Homes and farms are beingbuilt here and there in the forests, and the places where they live are being split apart. Now theylive in small groups in many small forests, and it's very hard for male pandas to find mates.They're even having trouble finding their joy---bamboo.

    Let's build paths to save the pandas!There is a plan to help the Giant Panda. By building paths, all of the separate forests that thepandas live in will be connected. To do this, some farmland will have to be returned to nature.This means, it will be difficult to save the Giant Panda if people don't stop developing.
