Firstly an email to us, with an answerAs Elche Hospital is the hospital forour area is it possible to have a busthat goes direct from Gran Alacant toElche Hospital?It is hard to believe that Gran Alacant is part of Santa Pola 10 minutes down the road as the busservice is between 1-2 hours a bus,then to go anywhere from Santa Polathe Su Bus does not connect it cantake hours to get to Guardamar,Elche or anywhere else. Why can'twe have a service that begins atGran Alacant to Elche and other destinations in the south.Talks have taken place with the SuBus company and arrangements arebeing made to start a new service toand from Elche hospital for Gran Alacant.

More transport news is that there areto be two taxis stationed on GranAlacant at the Commercial Centre.They will be prominent to all arrivingand leaving GA.

We asked the question, when will theSanta Pola bus station be built. The Town Hall now has to wait tohear from Valencia about the routeof the new tram service arriving viaAlicante Airport. The service will arrive at a place yet to be decided onGran Alacant on its journey from theairport. This will then link to SantaPola, but until the exact route is

confirmed, decisions cannot madeon the bus station in Santa Pola.From there it will run onward toPlaya Lisa in Santa Pola and then onto Guardamar and onward south.

Another major story, this time abouta second school for Gran Alacant.There are many rumours circulatingabout this, but here are the facts.There are 126 youngsters needing aplace at the present school, but theschool is full, so, as a few yearsback, portable classrooms will be installed at the GA Commercial centre, as before, to accomodatethese children whilst waiting for anew school to be built. The Town Hallhave offered a piece of land to theValencian Government to build anew school, which would be along-side the site of the new proposedhealth centre. (marked on our mapof Gran Alacant at the back of thisissue). ButThe Town Hall already knows thatthey will soon need another schoolfor the next age group when all ofthe children leave the presentschool.Another, much larger site, has alsobeen offered to Valencia, in the hopethat they will then agree to buildingtwo schools on this new site. Theproposed area is right up the top ofGA on the right, as you approach thelighthouse.The Town Hall want to avoid

transporting children down the N332to and from Santa Pola for theirschooling. So, we await the outcomeof these forthcoming decisions.

On March 12th an open day was heldat the new Gran Alacant Sports Centre, and what a place it is becoming. We have pictures for youon the right.As with many new facilities, this wasnamed after a person in the area,this time, someone who has givenmuch to the sporting scene in SantaPola, Jose Antonio Alemañ Valero. Itis good to see local facilities namedin this way. We were at the officialget together for the family to have alook round and their photos taken,before the doors opened for the“open day”.The indoor arena is superb, withfloor space for many sporting activities and a stepped concretearea for spectators. There are alsorooms for washing and toiletries aswell as a massive area under thestand for storage.The arena will not be open until theoutside tennis courts, football pitchetc are completed due to the safetyaspect of people around whilst building work is still being carriedout.Anyone, whether or not you are in aclub, will be able to get together,book the amenity you want, inside oroutside, and get on with taking advantage of all there is to offer.This will be one of the best sportscentres for miles around. For the enjoyment of the people of Gran Ala-cant.

All of the 100 trees that have diedalong the length of the recent newpaving were being replaced during

late March. None of the new treeshad to be paid for by our Town Hall.

Another area of replacement paving

took place during March, alongsidethe edge of the clot, near theCarabasi Complex. This is a temporary fix until the big new renovation along Av Mediterraneo iscomplete and then this particulararea of pavement can be pavedproperly. They will pave from thisarea, to the small roundabout andup beyond the allotments .

There have been complaints aboutthe music coming from the school.The school start time bell has been replaced by music at the start and

end of school which has upset some residents. As in many other cases,some like the new system, some donot. You can’t please all of the peopleall of the time.

Outside of the Carabasi Complex atemporary man hole cover has causeda few accidents. Loreto is going to talkto the relevant people concerned,about this.

The new market area has finally beenapproved by Valencia. There are stillnumerous complaints at the presentposition, both from the residents andfrom the stall holders who are runningout of space. There are still more than30 stallholders who want to comeonto Gran Alacant. Until the new siteis complete, the market road is to beextended across the road past theDragon Restaurant . Work should starton the new site by late summer, at acost of 600,000 euro. The ValencianGovernment is now putting out thecontracts for tender.

We are hearing of a few breakins, sodo be aware that these opportunistsare still about, and be careful to lockgrill doors even if you are in thehouse.

When you fly into El Altet airport youmay be using the new terminal.The 647 million euro, airport extension opened on March 24th.

Man goes in search of mermaids

On the 24th of April which is Easter Sunday the effervescentTerryoke will do a deep sea dive with the help of Damon of diveacademy diving center in Santa pola, to raise much neededfunds for the cancer support group in Gran Alacant at 4.30pm.

Terry will take to the water to try and locate mermaids which are believed to be inthe Vicinity. Can you help with sponsorship for the only registered cancer supportgroup in Gran Alacant. To run a charity you must hold a charity number and be registered to the powers that be, our charity number is 7261 and have branches allover the Costa's. Monte Mar Mixed Rinks Trophy held on 19th - 20th February 2011

Twenty-four teams entered this prestigiouscompetition this year, most of them from theCosta Blanca, but one team “Indalo” (From Mojacar) also took part. The teams were splitinto 6 groups of 4 and each team played eachother within their group. By lunchtime on Sunday20th the group stages had been completed andthe 4 best performing teams were known. Emerald Isle eventually won through by beatingHoradada in a good final. Spectators weretreated to some good quality bowling throughout

the two days especially in thefinal stages. MonteMar Bowls Clubwishes to thank allthose who played inthe tournament,those who assisted,those who supported the eventby attending and

our sponsors Bancaja. Our thanks also go toPilar from Bancaja who presented the prizes tothe finalists and last but not least to Jerry Bartleywho umpired the event.

March is a very busy period in which besidescompleting the three leagues that our teams arecompeting in, there are several internal competitions the first of which was the BernardPearce Memorial Trophy, held on 12th March2011. On another cold and wet morning 12 teams splitinto 4 groups. Each team played three gamesagainst the other team in their group. The threegames they each played was in two sets of 5 ends with an additional end if required to decide the winner. Once all the games had beenplayed the best performing team based on thethree games and the number of actual sets wonwas declared the winner. This is the first time wehave used ʻsets playʼ and it was an education tomany of us. The team of Terry lemon SueBounds, Pat Fielding and George Wilkinsonwere the eventual winners by amassing 5½points.

Between Monday 13th March to Sunday 20thMarch our finals week has been taking place inwhich various teams compete for internal competitions that have been running since thestart of the season.So far we have had 5 finals over two afternoons and thereare still 6 to be re-solved (Thursday,Saturday and Sundayafternoons).1. Mixed Pairs –Dave Melville & RitaTowle beat HarryDobson & Rowena Good, 24 shots to 16.2. Hay 126 niños que necesitan unaplaza en la escuela, pero la escuelaestá llena, así que como se hizohace unos años, se instalarán aulasportátiles en el Centro Comercial,para acomodar a estos niños mientras esperan a que el nuevocolegio se construya. El ayun-tamiento ha ofrecido un trozo detierra al Gobierno de Valencia paraconstruir un nuevo colegio, el cualestará al lado del futuro centro desalud (está marcado en el mapa alfinal de este número).

Pero el ayuntamiento ya sabe quepronto van a necesitar un institutode secundaria para cuando acabenla primaria estos niños.

Otro solar, mucho más grande,también ha sido ofrecido al Gobierno de Valencia con la esperanza de que aceptarán construir dos escuelas. La zonapropuesta está al final de avda. Escandinavia a la derecha, cercadel faro.

El ayuntamiento quiere evitar eltransporte de los niños por la N332hasta Santa Pola. Así que estamosesperando las próximas decisiones.

El 12 de marzo, se abrió por un díael nuevo Polideportivo de Gran Alacant, con todas las nuevas instalaciones, tenemos fotos eneste número.

Maar het stadshuis weet ook dat er nood isaan een hogerschool voor de kinderen dievan deze basischool komen , er is ook eengroter stuk land voorgesteld waar mogelijk isom de twee tegelijk op te bouwen , als helemaal naar boven rijd richting de vuurtoren is het aan de rechtse kant . Met deze beslissing wil het stadshuis het verhinderen dat de kinderen van Gran alacantmet transport naar en terug via de N332 naarSanta pola .Wachtende op de antwoorden over deze belangrijke beslissingen .

We waren aanwezig bij de officiele gettogetter,om een rondleiding door het sportcenter temaken voor het echt zijn deuren opend voorhet publiek .De indoor arena is prachtig, met ruimte voorvele sportieve activiteiten en een stevige concrete gebied voor toeschouwers. Er zijn kamers voorzien voor wasgelegen en toiletartikelen, evenals eenenorme gebied onder de stand voor opslag.De arena wordt niet geopend tot de buitentennisbanen, voetbalveld etc zijn voltooiddankzij het veiligheidsaspect van de mensenrond het gebouw terwijl werk nog steedswordt uitgevoerd. Iedereen, zal of u nu in eenclub, of niet kunnen samenkomen, boek deamenity u wilt, binnen of buiten, en aan deslag te profiteren van alles wat er te bieden.Dit zal een van de beste sportcentra voor mijlen rond. Voor het plezier van de mensenvan Gran Alacant.

Two weeks ago an elderly couple in their midseventies living in Spain received some tragicnews from the UK. Their son and grandson hadbeen killed in a climbing accident in Scotland.This story was reported in all the English newspapers and also on English television. Whatmany people do not know is that a few daysafter this the couple were informed of evenmore devastating news. The elderly lady was diagnosed with terminal cancer. They were intotal turmoil and had to quickly organise theirreturn to the UK. Unfortunately, their two petdogs Honey and Scrappy could not go with them.We agreed to take them and they are currentlysafe and well in a K9 foster home. Before thedistraught couple returned to the UK their parting wish was for their two dogs to go to thesame new home as they have always been together. Little Honey is a Pomeranian cross andScrappy is a miniature poodle, Honey is 8 yearsand Scrappy is 6 years. They have all vaccinations up to date and both have been sterilized. They play and sleep together andthey are inseparable.Linda had to have urgent surgery when she wastrying to give birth as the first puppy wasbreached. Her owner left her in agony for morethan 24 hours without taking her to a vet. Afriend of the receptionist in the local vet clinicwas the person that brought her to the clinicwhere Linda received emergency surgery. Threepuppies inside her were already dead and theone that survived is with a friend and beingbottle fed. Two days later Linda had a feverthat was 41º and so she had to have furthersurgery to clean out her highly infected womb(see our latest news page). Linda is on the roadto recovery but she desperately needs someoneto adopt her or foster her so that she can recover with people that really care for her.

Chloe and Cleo are sisters. They were found running along a busy road. They must have beenabandoned just before this. They are small, agedeight months and in good health.

Libby and her 3 kittens were abandoned by herowner. She is 1 year old and a very sweet,friendly cat. She is spayed and vaccinated.

Last month I discussed travellingback sixty years in time in yourTardis and not seeing a single Collared Dove in the Gran Alacantarea – and there would be a lot ofother things missing too. No Internet, no TV, no vacuum cleaners,and how would you do your laundryin the absence of washing machines?Some might say that this would be afine thing, we are too reliant on electrical gizmos nowadays, so getting your elbows well sudsed upand winding heavy mangles tosqueeze the water out of yourclothes (you DO know what a mangle was, don’t you?) would doyou the world of good.Except it wouldn’t, of course. Youwould send your laundry out to awasherwoman, or Lavandera, because you really couldn’t be bothered with it – so where are yougoing to find a Lavandera in the 21stcentury?Well, right here in GA actually, onlydon’t expect it to come completewith a box of Arial andfabric softener. Meet theLavandera Blanca, orWhite Washerwoman asthe Spanish call it; better known to Britishbirdwatchers as theWhite Wagtail becausethat is what it does –wags its tail, and neverstops doing it! TheWhite Wagtail seen inSpain is a slightly different bird to thecommon British PiedWagtail; in fact it’s asubspecies of the samerace, except that theBritish version is moreblack-and-white – theWagtail we see here is agreyer bird.The Washerwomanname comes from thefact that the bird is always in the vicinity of

water, running about non-stop (andwagging its tail) as it darts after insects at the water’s edge – I waslucky enough to catch this one in myphotograph standing still for morethan one second. They are verynoisy and obvious birds (so much sothat my birding chum John callsthem “budgies”) and are not justfound in the Clot but will also entertain you at your poolside whileyou are sunbathing.They are also known in some areasof Spain as Snow Birds, becausethey are commoner in winter whenthe cold winds blow, but here in GAthey are present all year. They areaggressive, too, and will see off anysimilar-sized birds if they thinkthey’re after their food supply.In some areas of Europe this bird isconsidered to be the patron saint ofbrewers and their customers, asWagtails were attracted to breweriesto catch insects which thrived onbrewery by-products, and it was alsobelieved that if you fed a Wagtail, itwould show the way back home ifyou were very drunk. Don’t try thishere, I can assure you it doesn’twork!
