Gabe and Skye's one for the road Cameron Boon
IF you've never been to Music in the Garden, this is your last chance to enjoy the enchanting folk and acoustic music.
Organisers Gabriel and Skye Waterford are leaving town for the east coast, but will hold one last music night at the Olive Pink Botanic Garden.
Local and nationally-known acts have played at the garden - including Katie Noonan, Neil Murray, Elsie Lange, various Waterfords and many more. Gabe said: "We were
contemplating what to do and how to say goodbye to everybody.
"When you work in hospitality, you get to know a lot of people and it gets hard to track everyone down.
"This last Music in the Garden is a nice way for us to say goodbye.
"There have been a lot of people who have played at the gardens over the years and there's an open invitation to anybody who has played or wanted to play to come up and do a couple of songs.
"It has been a real hub for
musIcIans and we wanted to finish it off like that."
Gabe said the invitation had gone out to Eden Baxter, Elsie Lange, M'Lis Scott and many others.
He said: "We've done OD launches for a bunch of musos in town, including Fujimoto and the Setting Suns and M'Lis Scott.
"This will be a coming together of people who have been involved in the cafe, even if they were just customers who came along occasionally.
"It is the end of a chapter for us. I think I'd just turned 23
when I arrived in town with my partner Skye, so we've been here for a good part of our 20s.
"There is some talk with the new owners that music might come back next year, but at this point there's no immediate plan."
Gabe and his family are moving east coast and live on a farm for 12 months. • The final Music in the Garden kicks off at 6pm tonight. Entry is free and there will be food and drink available.
Footloose is beUer but it ain't iconic Leigh Paatsch
IF I had a buck for every time someone complained there was a new Footloose remake on the way. I'd have about 15 bucks to my name.
Which would be almost enough to buy me a ticket t o that new Footloose remake e\'eryone's be n complaining about.
And you know what.? I could almost 'handle seeing this film a second t ime without worrying for my m en tal health a'fterwards.
First thin gs fi r t: How does Footloo e 2.0 stack up against t h e original'?
T ough quest ion. The ne\,' \'ersion is supenor In most departments.
The standard of acting is slightly higher. The standard of dancing is light yea rs better. Script and directio n are tighter. punchier and to the point.
But an d t h is is a big but -
Actors Andie MacDowell (L), Kenny Wormald and Dennis Quaid in a scene from Footloose
the original Footloose h olds an enduring iconic status fo r '80s t ragics. The n ew \"ersion will barely b e remembered by Ohristm as.
T he story remains pretty much the ame as before. a perky little melodrama pittmg young against old, cool against
square. and those with rhythm against those who ain t got it.
Of course. our hero is going to do somethmg about that before the final credits roll.
But first. there's the goodlooking daughter of a hardnosed preacher to be romanced. And there's a whole
lotta dancing to be done. T h e un know n Ke n n y
Wormald won the part of R en on account of his smooth moves, and he does impress when called upon to throw himself about in time to mUSIC. • Footloose, rated M, is on at the Alice Springs Cinema.
