Welcome Join us for the 2019 edition of Amersfoort Jazz, an annual World Jazz festival held in the historic inner city of Amersfoort, The Netherlands. The 41st edition of this event takes place on 23 – 26 May 2019. Amersfoort Jazz is yearly visited by about 80.000 people, who enjoy four days of World Jazz, adventurous and improvised music, an eclectic mix of musical genres and cultural traditions from all over the world.
Amersfoort Jazz is featuring 350 different artists at 18 dedicated stages, proudly presenting living legends as well as young talents and international laureates, who are introduced to the audience and a worldwide festival scene. Each year, Amersfoort Jazz pays particular attention to World Jazz from a specific country abroad.
Amersfoort is regarded as one of the cultural cities in the Netherlands. Its historic inner city, known for its well preserved medieval walls, squares and monasteries, is the ideal place for a diverse and dynamic music festival like Amersfoort Jazz. All concerts are within walking distance and free of charge to the public.
Amersfoort is known for its well preserved late medieval city centre with canals, market squares, bridges and town gates, churches, chapels and monasteries. De Onze Lieve Vrouwetoren (1444 AD) is one of the highest in the Netherlands. Some of the most illustrious people in Dutch history lived in Amersfoort, like politician Johan van Oldenbarnevelt, painter Piet Mondriaan and architect Jacob van Kampen. Amersfoort is recognized as a Dutch Creative City, fostering creativity among its citizens and providing many events and festivals. ZOOVER notes Amersfoort in its TOP 10 Dutch Best City Trips.
ABOUT AMERSFOORTAmersfoort is the second largest city of the province of Utrecht, at the geographical centre of The Netherlands. Amersfoort is named after the river Amer, which today is called Eem. Based upon archeological finds of Merowingian settlements on the Utrechtse Heuvelrug (ridge), the codified law text ‘Ewa ad Amorem’ (a.k.a. Lex Francorum Chamavorum) and the Carolingian document from 777 AD, it is assumed that the region was first established in the dark episode between Roman civilization and the period of Frankish king Charlemagne. The latter gave the Amer surrounding forests and lands to Bishop Alberic of Utrecht, who was about to reside under Köln (Cologne). City rights were granted by the bishop of Utrecht in 1259 AD. The city has a strong relation to clerical civilization ever since.

Israeli Jazz burst onto the international jazz
scene in the 90s, with pioneers such as Avishai
Cohen, Omer Avital and Yaron Herman moving
to New York and returning to Israel and thereby
sharing their knowledge and experience with the
upcoming generation of talented musicians. This
next generation of Israeli musicians, inspired by
their pioneering masters, combine influences
from the Levant and Middle East, also elements
from Morocco and Eastern Europe, into a
sophisticated ‘Israeli Sound’.

The Bop Collective XLBorn into a musical family, alto saxophonist and leader Irene Reig became a musician at a young age. She is currently living in The Netherlands, where she studied a Master Degree at the Amsterdam University of the Arts (Conservatorium van Amsterdam). With The Bob Collective, Irene Reig won the Sena Dutch Jazz Competition 2018 ‘publieksprijs’ and subsequently was endorsed by the festival Amersfoort Jazz to perform as a Sena Performers International Jazz Laureate.
This year, to strengthen the sustainable relationship, Irene Reig is invited back to Amersfoort with The Bob Collective, but enlarged to a new ensemble of 12 people. In this project, Reig is combining traditional music from Catalonia and the Balearic Islands, sung in the original language and dialect (by Marta Garrett and others), with jazz elements and rhythms from the Afro-American music tradition. The Bob Collective XL is presented for the first time at the festival Amersfoort Jazz 2019.
FiraB! Jazz QuintetIrene Reig is also performing with FiraB! Jazz Quintet, specially created for the festival Amersfoort Jazz 2019. Besides Reig, the group consists of musicians from the Balearic Islands: Tomeu Garcías (trombone), Pere Bujosa (double bass) and Teo Salvà (drums). The gifted pianist Miguel Rodríguez is from Madrid, but currently living in The Netherlands, where he studied a Master Degree at the Amsterdam University of the Arts (Conservatorium van Amsterdam). According to Irene Reig, the principal idea of FiraB! is “to make stronger connections between musicians from around Europe, by letting them play and improvise together.”

The aim of the conference is to exchange visions and kickstart initiatives and (international) collaboration on talent development; to build an eco-system of strong World Jazz players from all over the globe, to enhance collaboration on an international level. Festivals attending the World Jazz Conference are given the opportunity to present a laureate of their choice to play at the Sena Performers International Jazz Laureate Festival, which is part of Amersfoort Jazz.

Amsterdam based South-Korean drummer Sun-Mi Hong got her breakthrough in 2016, winning the International Jazz Award in Getxo (ESP) with the Daahoud Salim Quintet, followed by the B-Jazz Award in Leuven (BEL) the year after. Already during her studies at the Conservatorium van Amsterdam with Martijn Vink, Marcel Serierse and Lucas van Merwijk, Sun toured intensely with Karel Boehlee, Benjamin Herman and Jasper Blom and released her first album (2017). The compositions are influenced by the ICP Orchestra, Ambrose Akinmusire and Maurice Ravel.
In 2018 she won second place at the Getxo International Jazz Competiton, won the Sena Dutch Jazz Competition and performed at Amersfoort Jazz with the ‘Bitches Brewery’. Sun subsequently was selected Young VIP.
With her own group, consisting of upcoming and outstanding musicians Alistair Payne (trumpet), Nicolo Ricci (sax), Young-Woo Lee (piano) and Alessandro Fongaro (bass), Sun-Mi Hong performs on Saturday, May 25th, at de Observant, Amersfoort.
Sun: “I finally got into one of the most famous conservatories in Seoul called ‘Howon University.’I studied Funk, Rock, R&B... anything groovy! At that time, I think I preferred to play the drums to listening to music, to be honest!”
“I checked out more drummers on YouTube with my colleagues. That’s when I heard Brian Blade with Joshua Redman. I immediately fell in love with how Brian played the drums. Flexibility, flowing, freedom and sound.”
“Back then there were not a lot of possibilities to study Jazz in Korea. Therefore, I decided to study abroad. I got accepted to Amsterdam Conservatory and studied from 2011 to 2018. 6 years of studying Jazz with some of the greatest drummers in Europe changed my life. Perceiving music has changed completely. I got immersed in so much culture and their way of thinking, their way of approaching music. Then also all the intense playing with friends from all over the world: this whole experience shaped who I am now.”
Amersfoort Jazz presents:
