A NOTE FROM THE EDITORS

Most editor’s letters seem to begin with a hefty dose of self-congratulation. But as we sit here about to go to print on this first issue of Galleri Magazine all there really is to say is a very sincere and deeply felt Thank You…

Thank you to all the people around us who have helped in so many ways in making this project happen. Thank you to all the support team at Red Dog, China Stylus and Red Cactus who put up with us as we gave way too much time to the magazine and not enough time to them. Thank you for the unfaltering enthusiasm that so many have shown for the idea. And thank you to all those who have stepped up to provide all manner of help, support and assistance.

But most of all, thank you to all the artists and contributors who have given us their work. The response has been incredible. We have enough great material to fill the first three issues already. The diversity, quality and energy of what you see here proves what we already know – that Hong Kong has a thriving, ever-growing creative community that is better than some, and equal to many others in the world.

And thank you for looking. We hope you appreciate this magazine and the fact that it is very proudly Made in Hong Kong.

Jay FC & Timon WehrliJuly 2007, Hong Kong

Note All artists’ profiles in the magazine have been reprinted exactly as they were provided and in the language they were provided. Each artist represented themselves the way they wanted to be seen, therefore we have chosen not to edit or standardise the text.

EXHIBITION 004 LEON SAPERSTEIN

Profile Many ancient cultures believe the camera captures the soul of it’s subjects. Within my work I feel this to be true. It seems a beautiful expression of the nude form is not always just a beautiful piece of art, but can also be an experience of enlightenment and understanding of who we are as a physical and emotional beings. In my work I’m interested in showing this energetic flow of “Chi” that we radiate.

EXHIBITION 008 JOHN LUI

Profile John-John was what they used to call him. But now he is all grown up and faces the responsibilities that society has for him to take care of. Optimistic to take on this task, he navigates the world, ensuring a bright future. With so many styles out there, he explores to find a hole to dig himself into. Showered by dust, he is always one step behind the trendsetters. Eager, all he knows is to stick with what has worked for him whilst they still called him by his nickname. And that is to be challenged and excited for the new and unknown. To having faith and taking that one extra step outside one’s comfort zone. And tackling all the opportunities the world throws at him with humility. Wisest is the man who is always willing to learn. And that is something he can only hope he will stick with. To the beginning...

EXHIBITION 011 START FROM ZERO

Profile START stands for Street ART, Stencil ART and Sticker ART. There are two meanings of “Start From Zero”; 1) He started performing street art from nothing, i.e. “zero”. He hopes that when someone sees his stickers, they will be like him and start doing street art from “zero”. 2) It can be a slogan for encouraging people when they are unhappy, down or miserable. He also wants people to remind their friends of this slogan when the same things happen.

Apart from using stickers, “Start From Zero” also uses wheat pastes, spraying on stencils with different characters and illustrations to convey his message on the streets.“Start From Zero” does solo street art as well as collaboration street art. He is also an active member of a Hong Kong street art crew – ST/ART.

Besides performing street art, ”Start From Zero” will release various products; T shirts, badges caps, key chains and other accessories. These are the additional media for Start From Zero to more widely spread his message to everyone.

EXHIBITION 013 ISABELLBELLBELL

Profile “Movement” and “The Moment”.I remember a friend, who studied photography, asked me once the difference between these two terms. To me, “Movement”, is something that will never stop, an action. “The Moment” is a frame, an everlasting action inside the moment. I don’t know if this is correct, but that’s my answer.

I’m Isabell Chan. I was born and have lived all my life in Hong Kong, and I fell in love with photography since I took a couple of shots of my friends, where I could see “The Moment”. It was right then that I decided to give up my routine office job and throw myself into photography, trying to find a way to do better, and wanting to learn more about it, because I love it.

I worked with Ike, a great black & white photographer, for half a year, then from early 2006 I joined the Red Dog team, where I have been based until now. I have been focused on implementing what I’ve learnt into my own photography; nothing fancy, just simple and natural things. But mostly, I love catching the moment inside the movement. “The Moment”, which lasts forever and ever.

Biography Tiffanycheetah is a Hong Kong artist. In 2006, she started working in a graphic house creating mostly illustrations and graphics. She has always been interested in illustration and creativity in general and puts as much time to enjoy herself every moment she can.

She looks for inspiration all the time that she encounters, lives for and witnesses, especially the most obvious ones. My illustrations are deeply inspired by occurrences impacting our daily lives – like the keep fit trend. She hates fat, she hates slim… and all the things going wrong in the world. She loves to create nude girls and fat girls to go against the negative thinking of the human body. In recent years she has fallen in love with hair.

EXHIBITION 017 JUSTO

Name Justo Cascante III

Profile Justo Cascante has been living in Hong Kong for 14 years now; He’s originally from Manila Philippines. After graduating Fine Arts major in Painting, he started to work as a Special Effects Make-up Artist and a Senior Sculptor. After few years he moved to Hong Kong to work for Tsui Harks film outfit and production house as a multimedia artist using different mediums to produce visual effects for movies including 3d animation.

Because of its fast pace life and fast intake of information painting and drawing becomes a cooling system to balance himself to produce more quality works. After experiencing a series of mild depression he started to paint beautiful and happy images and need not to see the shadows of his pain. For in the process of his narrative, and in the process of a living expression, my works offered me a kind of balance that revealed both the Beauty of Nature and the poignancy of this life.

Like a Code that needs to be broken… his art can be viewed in many ways. Interpretation becomes the responsibility of my viewers. He is a simple man with a complex story. The burden of his complexity is but him alone. He therefore leaves with you, his viewers the simple narrative that invokes the poetic license of his artistry.

Justo had four one-man exhibition in Hong Kong and Philippines and fifteen group exhibitions. His commercial works on computers open up a new view on how he sees his future paintings based from patterned and pre-digested images from pop culture and famous local everyday icons. Hopefully they will be transparent and blended in terms of form and content.

Profile Celestial are a Hong Kong musical collective and what you see here is the artwork created by producer, Peter Millward, for the CD sleeve of the fourth Celestial album, “Electric Road”. The photo-montage (created from scratch by Pete) portrays a surreal Hong Kong street - but don’t bother looking for it, it doesn’t really exist. “I love Photo-Shop!” says Pete. Although “Electric Road” is the name of a real street, the album isn’t really about that street, but rather the name serves as a descriptor for an imagined soundscape, or subterranean mind space, somewhere nearer the bottom of Hong Kong’s harbour, if the underwater dub electronica which makes up the album is anything to go by. And the sleeve is an apt reflection of this, like the false memory of a perfect (imagined) past.

Sex M

Age 40

Profile Why do I love fashion? I think when I was 16 I have started to love it and like to dress up with my own individual element. But my educational background and drawing skill were not good so I had not planned to learn fashon design. Till to I was 19, I worked for a textile company as an intern, I knew a colleague whose brother was studying fashion design in England and he always told her brother things to me about fashion that made my fashion design thought to be sprouted from that period.

After three years, when I was 22, I took my courage and made a decision to study fashion design evening course in a private college, after six months, I finished it and found a position as an assistant fashion designer in a garment factory, driven by my inferiority complex, I could not adapt myself in the company cause all the colleagues surrounded me that their educational background were better than me ( I just studied fashion design in inferior private college which was not recognized publicly) so after three months, I resigned from it, then I tried to do different kinds of jobs but I had not forgotten fashion even though I had stopped to step my feet on the fashion field. When I was 28, I took my courage again to apply certificate of fashion design couse in technical institute, through the intern examination, I passed it and started to study certificate in fasion design course in technical institute for three years.

When I finished it, I held out much hope for my future in fashion, I tried to participated a few fashion contests. Two of them in which I was qualified to get into final stage. One was Nagoya Fashion Contest 1998 in Nagoya, Japan. Another was Brother Cup International

young fashion design contest 2000 in Bejing, China where I expect my idiosyncratic design style will by appreciated and excavated by investor, but of course, the result was not like my expectation. I have never regreted for my euthusiasm in fashion design even though I get nothing in it now. But it really can enlighten my artistic potential that other jobs could not give me. Nowadays, I just hope someday I can save a sum of money to set up my boutique that I could design my individual fashion which people will like even though that may be naive.

EXHIBITION 024 L1ESONE

Name L1ES ONE

EVOLUTIONIST GRAFFITI – To be true to the spontaneity and the verve of the graffiti movement without having any limits on techniques and support.

Profile The French born graffiti artist L1ES ONE is one of the most exciting artists from the burgeoning world graffiti/street art scene. He brings his incisive style and vision to create a satirical portrait of our contemporary society. Visually sophisticated and conceptually provocative, his images challenge global trends hypocrisy, hyper-consumerism and social control. He centers his work around questions whose answers underline the mechanisms of advertising and propaganda which invade our public spaces. The visual codes used by L1ES ONE highlight our modern society products, myths and heroes. His challenge is to live creatively in a technological world, accepting this jaded world on which we impose our faltered thoughts, and to find a harmony between nature and technology.

L1ES ONE started wall-painting in the streets at the age of 11 in the late 1980s. Through the years, he has been continuously renewing his work doing wall painting, interior design, object design, art show, ads, logos, communication, live happenings and fashion for private companies, such as Sony, MTV, Toyota, etc., while staying true to the graffiti essence: an ephemeral and activist art which has to serve an alternative cause far from the politically correct, far from the system. After exhibiting all around the world from New York, Paris, Madrid, to London, he is now based in Hong Kong and he is willing to bring his energy and his art to the Asian scene.

Profile Born in 1984, I am of Thai and Swiss origin, but have lived in Hong Kong most of my life, until I set off to Australia for study. Drawing, art and design is pretty much a huge part of my life and I do these for myself and others’ enjoyment. Ever since I discovered the HipHop culture at the age of 11 and began to paint graffiti at the age of 16, elements of it have been included into my artwork and design ever since. I continue to take advantage of my skills and use it as a form of expression of ideas and passion. Do what you love, even though it won’t pay the bills! EXHIBITION 031 AKW vs STEVE ELLUL

RUMBLE IN THE JUNGLEText: AKW Graphics: Steve Ellul

Steve Ellul is not looking very happy. It’s about 12.30am on a recent Friday night at Club Magazine in Central, and a bunch of local DJs are warming up for the set by Paul Harding of Perth junglists Pendulum.

They’ve got a bit of a dark reputation, those Pendulum lads, and support DJ Kay C is setting the tone for the rest of the night by dropping some of the nastiest drum ’n’ bass that has been heard in this capital of Canto-pop for some time.

But as Ellul nurses his pint, he is wearing a look that combines disbelief with a bit of disgust. “When I played this sort of stuff 10 years ago, I cleared the floor. Now look at this.”

Ellul points to the dance floor in front of him, which is far from cleared. In fact, it’s packed with cute young chicks with bare midriffs who were around 10 years old in 1995 when Goldie released Timeless, the track that broke the sound through to the mainstream and signalled that jungle had truly arrived.

Ellul probably has reason to be surprised by the drum ’n’ bass explosion in Hong Kong, as he was one of the main figures behind the introduction of jungle into the city. In the latter half of the 1990s, the now-defunct Central nightspot CE-Top played host to Mashup, a club night run by Ellul and several other jungle followers that was for many people their first experience with drum ’n’ bass.

Under the tagline “Action, adventure, mystery, drinking”, Mashup became the longest-running club night of its time, and over the years exposed clubbers not only to the questionable talents of MC Patrick,

but the deck skills of Arkham – now of Red and White Label fame – Mick Hart and Yeodie.

Unfortunately, Mashup didn’t survive the demise of CE-Top around the turn of the millennium, but its spirit was reborn in Arkham’s Red Label events, which kept the drum ’n’ bass vibe alive at Yumla in Central during a few lean years for junglists. Those lean years are gone now, however, and going up against Red Label in usually friendly competition are more recent crews Magnetic Soul, KonkreteBass and Heavy.

But in a city where trends come and go at lightning speed and where numerous electronic music genres including trance and breakbeat have developed huge followings before basically dying out, how has this ruffest of sounds managed to not only survive but build a bigger following year after year? And, more importantly, do DJs really need to wear camouflage clothing before they are taken seriously in the drum ’n’ bass arena?

“Drum ’n’ bass is unique – it does not stray off into ‘new territory’ such as regular 4/4 music,” says Arkham. “If you take trance as an example, the listener can quite easily switch to other 4/4 genres such as house or techno without too much of a jump, whereas drum ’n’ bass does not have a similar equivalent – the beat count is unique, the structure is unique and as such it retains its followers. Having said this, it may be that trance is just rubbish.”

Magnetic Soul DJ and promoter Cookie is a modest kind of guy, and tends to play down the size of the local junglist community as well as the success of his own events. But there’s little doubt that he’s the hardest-working man in the local drum ’n’ bass business, and apart from Pendulum has also recently brought out Dieselboy, and TC1 and Stress Level.

Page 58: Galleri Magazine (Issue One)

Mashup-galleri.indd 4-5 7/10/07 10:51:02 PM

“My strategy has been to to start small, and enforce a more liquid, soulful, jazzy style of drum ’n’ bass while we gained exposure and got access to more and more venues in the first few months. This way we could learn to work together as a team and learn what works and what doesn’t work in Hong Kong. The result is that we produce quality events with quality international DJs without losing money.”

What about the sound’s longevity? “Drum ’n’ bass producers have branched off into sub-genres and those sub-genres continue to be innovative. There’s not as many drum ’n’ bass producers as there might be in house or trance. I think the guys that are holding their own in DnB and continuing to keep their names at the top are geniuses at producing and understand the technology to produce the records. There’s also a new generation of producers that are pushing new boundaries such as Marky and XRS, Alix Perez, Nu:Tone, Logistics, and D Kay that make drum ’n’ bass that has a more organic influence and thus is more accessible to a broader scope of fans.”

Both Arkham and Cookie acknowledge that many of the midriff-exposing crowd probably don’t understand where the music has come from, or would have heard of the seminal drum ’n’ bass club nights such as Speed and Metalheadz, but they believe this is irrelevant.

Cookie says: “Lots of the crowd or even some of the DJs don’t remember certain loops or samples from 10 years ago. Big tunes are big tunes though, and I’m surprised sometimes by the requests or the feedback that we get at some of the parties from the crowd. Some people obviously know their drum ’n’ bass.”

While drum ’n’ bass events are arguably the most significant phenomenon in underground Hong Kong clubland these days, Arkham says not much has really changed for him. “I still play tracks produced even up to 12 years ago and frankly most people are none the wiser (any longer than that and you can probably tell the difference). The main difference between now and 10 years ago with regards to the scene is that people, on the whole, at least know what the music is. When Mashup were doing it, people would be like, ’What the fuck?’.”

Steve Ellul (Graphics)Steve Ellul is a designer that spends more time at home than going out and listening to drum’n’bass these days. He likes to spend his free time playing with his son Joseph, falling off his mountain bike and twiddling with his gas BBQ. Both his turntables are now broken and his records are old (classic) and gathering dust – so a MASHUP revival is unlikely any time soon.

Contact [email protected]

AKW (Words)AKW is a long-term music writer and DJ who actually doesn’t even like drum‘n’bass all that much. A veteran of the BeatSuite and UncutDope breakbeat events, he can now be caught spinning electro and techno at Yumla’s monthly Foundation One event.

Contact [email protected]

So these are happy days for local drum ’n’ bass followers, and with the likes of Magnetic Soul and Red Label at the controls, punters are poised for even more nights of punishing low frequencies and scattershot beats. But what about camouflage clothing? Arkham says: “I don’t have any, but I have camouflage bed sheets – does that make me a true junglist?”

EXHIBITION 037 BIRCH

Profile Born in Brighton in 1969, Birch began painting at a very early age under the guidance of his parents. His mother is an accomplished painter and art teacher and his father is a graphic and interior designer. Birch moved to Hong Kong in 1996 where he eventually took up a professional career as an artist. He is now well established as a leading Hong Kong contemporary artist who is fast building a reputation internationally as both a painter and a multi-media artist with his finger on the pulse of street culture.

Chosen as winner of 2004’s Schoeni Asian Art Award by the Sovereign Group, Birch is known for his painting, in particular his portraits, which have drawn much attention due to a number of high-profile commissions. He has also held a series of extremely successful solo exhibitions in the past few years as well as finding time to curate one of Hong Kong’s largest group shows with over 30 artists involved. His current projects include not only curating the inaugural exhibition at the new 10 Chancery Lane Warehouse space in Hong Kong, but also a large-scale collaborative project with photographer Wing Shya and Japanese fashion brand Evisu – a solo exhibition with a substantial number of commissioned works.

EXHIBITION 038 10/10 HONG KONG VISION

Project 10/10 Hong Kong Vision : Past/Future featured 10 artists from the ST/ART Collective in an exhibition where each artist expressed their vision of Hong Kong with two artworks – one for the 10 years past, and one for the future 10 years. Deliberately timed to coincide with the handover 10th anniversary, the exhibition was a chance to reflect and look forward. It was not a political exhibition but an honest and genuine response to the uncertainty of life in a changing Hong Kong. But it was also a celebration of what still makes this city and it’s people great. It’s resiliance, enthusiasm, forward-thinking outlook and sheer energy.

The exhibition, held at Wanchai’s IdN Gallery was successfully concluded on 20/07/07 after a four week run that gained considerable media coverage and positive feedback. Featured artists were; COM, GraphicAirlines, HKR, Big Mad, Start From Zero, ks, C#, ESP, Ping and Katol. 10/10 was the third group exhibition by the ST/ART urban art collective – check the website at www.start.hk for more details of past projects.

THE CONSPIRACY CORNERSHOP It has been said the reason we were treated to such beautiful clear blue skies during the handover period – when all international eyes were on

Hong Kong – is because governments on both sides of the border made a deal and literally shut down the polluting factories for two weeks in order to make a good – yet misrepresentative –

impression. Truth or myth. You decide.

Remember – the conspiracy is not a theory. Send yours to: [email protected]

40 DAYS 324 DAYSWe love the fact that we live and work in one of the most creative cities in the world. We love that despite being busy, manic and about as urban as any city can get, just 30 minutes away we can find ourselves in a beautiful country park or on a beach. We love that there is so much for our hearts, minds and eyes to appreciate in this town.

But what good is all that if we can’t see more than 20 metres in front of us and the air we breathe becomes toxic?

It was recorded that Hong Kong only had around 40 clear days throughout the whole of 2006.

This is our way to ask everyone to start stopping. Stop the pollution.Stop the waste. Stop standing by, start doing something.

A couple of points about HK air pollution to get you in the mood:

• The method for measuring the API in Hong Kong is not comparable to any other scale in the world. Therefore when the weather report states there is low pollution, it is still higher than most cities in the world

• The top polluters for air pollution in Hong Kong are power plants causing 92% of the total emissions of S02 and 50% of NOx and respirable suspended particles (RSP)

• In 2003 CLP among others started to burn coal instead of LNG to produce power

When you live in a city where you can’t even see the city half the time because of the pollution, it’s time to Start Stopping.

Voice your disapproval, make yourself heard and get involved. Everyone one of us can make a difference to the air we breath.
