Tanto tempo fa, Gallina e Aquila eranoamici. Vivevano in pace insieme a tutti glialtri uccellini. Nessuno di loro potevavolare.

Once upon a time, Hen and Eagle werefriends. They lived in peace with all theother birds. None of them could fly.

Un giorno, arrivò una carestia. Aquiladovette camminare molto lontano pertrovare del cibo. Tornò molto stanca. “Cideve essere un modo più facile perviaggiare!” Disse.

One day, there was famine in the land.Eagle had to walk very far to find food.She came back very tired. “There must bean easier way to travel!” said Eagle.

Dopo una buona notte di sonno e riposo,Gallina ebbe un’idea brillante. Cominciò acollezionare le piume cadute dai loroamici uccelli. “Cuciamole insieme sopra lenostre piume,” disse. “Forse questo tirenderà più facile viaggiare.”

After a good night’s sleep, Hen had abrilliant idea. She began collecting thefallen feathers from all their bird friends.“Let’s sew them together on top of ourown feathers,” she said. “Perhaps that willmake it easier to travel.”

Aquila era l’unica nel villaggio apossedere un ago, quindi cominciò acucire per prima. Si fece un paio dibellissime ali e volò in alto, al di sopra diGallina. Gallina prese in prestito l’ago, masi stancò presto di cucire. Lasciò l’agosulla mensola e andò in cucina apreparare da mangiare per i suoi piccini.

Eagle was the only one in the village witha needle, so she started sewing first. Shemade herself a pair of beautiful wings andflew high above Hen. Hen borrowed theneedle but she soon got tired of sewing.She left the needle on the cupboard andwent into the kitchen to prepare food forher children.

Ma gli altri uccelli video Aquila volare via.Chiesero a Gallina di prestargli l’ago perfarsi delle ali anche loro. Presto ci furonomilioni di uccelli che volavano per tutto ilcielo.

But the other birds had seen Eagle flyingaway. They asked Hen to lend them theneedle to make wings for themselves too.Soon there were birds flying all over thesky.

Quando l’ultimo uccello restituì l’agoprestato, Gallina non c’era. Perciò i suoifigli presero l’ago e cominciarono agiocare con esso. Quando si stancarono,lasciarono l’ago nella sabbia.

When the last bird returned the borrowedneedle, Hen was not there. So her childrentook the needle and started playing withit. When they got tired of the game, theyleft the needle in the sand.

Quel pomeriggio, Aquila tornò. Chiesel’ago perché doveva sistemare dellepiume che si erano staccate durante ilvolo. Gallina guardò sulla mensola. Cercòin cucina Guardò nel cortile. Ma l’ago nonera da nessuna parte.

Later that afternoon, Eagle returned. Sheasked for the needle to fix some feathersthat had loosened on her journey. Henlooked on the cupboard. She looked in thekitchen. She looked in the yard. But theneedle was nowhere to be found.

“Dammi solo un giorno,” implorò Gallina:“Poi potrai aggiustare la tua ala e volare dinuovo a prendere del cibo.” “Solo un altrogiorno!” Rispose Aquila. “Se non riesci atrovare l’ago, mi dovrai dare uno dei tuoipulcini come pagamento.”

“Just give me a day,” Hen begged Eagle.“Then you can fix your wing and fly awayto get food again.” “Just one more day,”said Eagle. “If you can’t find the needle,you’ll have to give me one of your chicksas payment.”

Quando Aquila tornò il giorno dopo, trovòGallina a raspare nella sabbia, ma nessunago. Aquila volò basso velocissima eacchiappò uno dei pulcini. Ed è per questoche ora, ogni volta che Aquila appare,trova Gallina a raspare nella sabbia incerca dell’ago.

When Eagle came the next day, she foundHen scratching in the sand, but no needle.So Eagle flew down very fast and caughtone of the chicks. She carried it away.Forever after that, whenever Eagleappears, she finds Hen scratching in thesand for the needle.

Appena l’ombra delle ali di Aquila siproietta sul suolo, Gallina avvisa i suoipulcini. “State alla larga dalla terra secca espiazzata!” E loro rispondono: “Non siamosciocchi. Scapperemo”

As the shadow of Eagle’s wing falls on theground, Hen warns her chicks. “Get out ofthe bare and dry land.” And they respond:“We are not fools. We will run.”
